Prologue (from the episode)
“I’ve been pushing you away.”
“Yeah, you have.”
Sigh. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. You had to figure some things out. I understand.” Pause. “Look, Mac.” Harm takes her hand. “Nothing’s changed. I’m still here. Let’s just enjoy the good news. Be happy. You’re alive.”
“You know what makes the news better? We both are.”
Chapter 1
Fri. Dec. 24th 2030 EST
Pennington Medical Center
Sleepy Hollow, Virginia
Mac tried to keep her eyes open, but her lids were weighing down heavily, because of the pain medication. Harm could sense that sleep was beginning to overtake her. Still holding her hand, he quietly said, “You need to get some rest so that the doctor will release you tomorrow. I’m going to go call Bud and Harriet and explain why we aren’t there, get my overnight bag from my car, pick up some magazines from the gift shop, and then I promise I’ll be back. In the meantime, you get some sleep.”
“Harm, I hate for you to miss the church service and dinner at Bud and Harriet’s. You really don’t need to stay here, I’ll be fine.”
“I’m staying,” Harm said firmly. Then in a softer tone, “I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it anyway, knowing that my best friend is alone in a hospital room.” With that, he squeezed her hand and rose to leave.
“Thanks for being here. It means a lot.”
Harm stopped and looked back. “That’s what best friends are for.” He smiled at her warmly and then stepped outside.
[He said he’s still here for me and nothing’s changed. It sounds like we still have a chance to make this work.] Mac thought about the four percent chance she had discussed with Commander McCool and a small smile crept over her face as she drifted off to sleep.
*****
[Sir, where are you? And where is Col. Mackenzie? We have been worried sick about you! Dinner’s almost over, but you still have time to make it to church.] Bud’s frantic voice came through loudly on Harm’s cell phone.
“Relax Bud,” Harm chuckled. “Mac and I won’t be at any of the events tonight. Mac was in a car accident, but she is going to be fine. The doctor wants to keep her overnight at the hospital and I am going to stay here with her. She doesn’t have any major injuries, just some pulled muscles, pain, and soreness, but they want her to stay here as a precaution. Tell everyone ‘Merry Christmas’ for us.”
[I will, sir.] The relief in Bud’s voice was evident. [Tell the Colonel that we are glad she is okay. I’ll let everyone know what happened. We’ll miss seeing you this year.]
“We’ll miss seeing you too. Merry Christmas, Bud.”
[Merry Christmas to you too, Sir.]

Harm slipped into Mac’s room as quietly as he could, not wanting to wake her. After purchasing some magazines at the hospital gift shop, he had realized that neither one of them had eaten. Knowing that the hungry marine upstairs wouldn’t tolerate hospital food, he took a side trip to the small dining room and picked up some sandwiches. Now that he was back in her room, he wasn’t sure if he should wake her up to eat, or just let her sleep. Soon that decision was made for him. She stirred at his presence and her eyes fluttered open.
As she saw the bag, she joked, “So what did you bring me to eat?”
“A three meat Italian sub for you, and a veggie sub for me.” He smiled as he handed her the sandwich.
“You always know what I want,” she said playfully as she took the sandwich from him.
[And I certainly know what *I* want,] he added to himself. But aloud he quipped, “Of course. You want whatever is the unhealthiest item on the menu.”
“That is not true!” She said defensively, knowing full well that it was.
After finishing off her sandwich, Mac felt the weight of her eyelids again. Harm noticed and encouraged her to try to go back to sleep. Once he saw that she was, he tried to read a magazine, but he couldn’t seem to focus on anything but her. He found himself staring at her more than the magazine. Despite her face being red and puffy, she was still beautiful. He found himself saying another prayer of thanks that she was okay. He felt as if they both had been given yet another chance. [She apologized for pushing me away. Could it be that she is finally ready to come to me? If so, I’m going to get it right this time. I’m not going to blow it again!] He mentally vowed to himself as he watched her sleep.

“Where the heck is that doctor?” Mac yelled impatiently. “I want to go home! It’s Christmas for cryin’ out loud!”
“Mac, calm down,” Harm said patiently. “He’ll be here when he can. I’m sure they are short staffed with it being a holiday. I’ll go see what I can find out.”
Just then, the doctor walked into the room, carrying her chart and X-ray results with him.
“And how are we doing this morning, Ms. MacKenzie?”
“I’ll be a heck of a lot better once you let me out of here!” Mac snapped.
The doctor chuckled and looked at Harm. “I see she already *is* better. She certainly didn’t have that spunk last night!”
“No, she didn’t. She seems to be back to her normal, sarcastic self this morning. And the breakfast food didn’t help matters.” Harm flashed her a sly grin.
“I don’t know *what* it was, but that was *not* food this morning, flyboy!”
“So I’m guessing that you don’t want us to bother bringing you lunch before we let you go home?” The doctor asked, assuming what the answer would be.
“Please don’t bother,” Mac groaned.
Harm quietly slipped out of the room as the doctor finished checking her over. After a few minutes, the doctor came out and walked over to where Harm was standing.
“I still don’t see any permanent or major damage, just some pulled muscles and ligaments, so I want her to take it easy for a couple of days to give her body some time to rest. She got banged up pretty bad, and she is going to be awfully sore, but she’ll be fine in a few days. In the meantime, she can take ibuprofen for the pain and swelling.”
Harm nodded in understanding.
“There is no real need to keep her here, but I really would like her to have someone with her for the next 24 hours or so, just to keep an eye on her, make sure no residual problems develop, and make sure she doesn’t overdo it. She seems to be the type that would try to take on too much, too soon.”
Harm stifled a laugh at the doctor’s assessment. “You are definitely right about her. And she can stay with me. I am probably the closest thing to family she has here. We have been best friends and partners for over 8 years, so I am used to watching her six.”
“Good, I’ll release her into your care then. A nurse will be by later with the release paperwork for you and Ms. MacKenzie to sign. Then she will assist you in getting checked out and on your way.”
The doctor extended his hand to Harm. “Good luck with her.”
Harm shook his hand firmly. “Thanks. I’m probably going to need it.” [In more ways than one], he added silently as the doctor left.

Driving home
It had been a painfully long time before the nurse finished the release paperwork. While they were waiting, Harm had picked up more sandwiches from the hospital dining room. He wasn’t about to let a marine go hungry. After they ate, the paperwork was ready. And once it was signed, there was another long wait before they could actually leave
When they were finally settled into Harm’s SUV, Mac leaned back and sighed.
“Since I am not allowed to be by myself, I am assuming you are taking me to your place?”
“Well, it would certainly be easier for me to take care of you if I am at my place where I know where everything is,” Harm reasoned.
“Well, I can’t argue with that. Can we stop by my place first? I have an overnight bag already packed and a Christmas present for you under the tree.”
“Sure. I have a present for you too, so we might as well exchange gifts tonight. It *is* Christmas Day and we still have a few hours left, after all.” He took his eyes off the road long enough to look at her and see the sad look in her eyes.
“Mac, what’s wrong?” He tenderly touched her hand and was relieved when she took his hand and squeezed it.
“I’m sorry you had to spend most of Christmas Day cooped up in a hospital with an irritated and annoying marine.”
“Mac,” Harm started gently. “You had every right to be irritated. Heck, *I* was irritated, too. It took way too long for us to get out of there. As for being annoying, you are anything but. Feisty, yes, but never annoying.” Harm smiled. “I’m just glad I got to spend Christmas with you. And if it took a car accident for that to happen, then so be it. Let’s just be thankful that you are going to be okay and that we are going home now.” Still holding her hand, he squeezed it before releasing it, returning his attention to the road.
“I’m sorry. You’re right. And I am glad I got to spend Christmas with you too,” Mac said in a low, sincere voice. Then, smiling, she added, “Let’s go home, sailor.”

Harm’s Apartment

Both of them felt a sense of relief when they finally pulled up in front of Harm’s apartment. Harm jumped out and quickly ran around to the passenger side of the car and opened Mac’s door. He put his arm around her for support. Mac’s face contorted with pain as she eased herself out of the SUV. As she tried to stand, she leaned in to Harm’s embrace, her legs failing her.
“Are you sure you can make it?” His face was full of concern.
“Yeah, just bear with me, my legs are protesting quite loudly,” she said while still leaning heavily into him.
Harm shut the car door, put his keys in his shirt pocket, and in one motion, bent over and put his other arm behind her knees, easily sweeping her up into his arms.
“Harm,” she laughed, “I don’t need you to carry me. I am perfectly capable of walking. I’m just a little sore still. Probably from spending too much time in a hospital bed.”
“Yeah, but isn’t it more fun this way?” he grinned.
“What will your neighbors think?” she protested.
“Who cares what they think? Let them talk!” He winked at her.
Mac playfully slapped him on the shoulder. “I’m going to let that one slide, since I am going to be at your mercy for the rest of the weekend!” Secretly, she was enjoying the fact that he was openly flirting with her. [This may turn out to be a great weekend after all,] she thought as her smile got even bigger.
Harm carried her all the way up, both of them joking and laughing the entire time. He didn’t want to drop her, nor did he want to put her down, so he had to depend on her to fumble with the elevator, the key, and the door. Once inside his apartment, he laid her down on the couch.
“Don’t go anywhere. I’m just going to go back to the car to get your stuff, and then I’ll be right back.”
“Where am I going to go, sailor? I can’t walk, remember?” The playfulness in her voice contradicted her sarcastic words.
“Very funny, marine.”
When he returned, she had already turned on the TV and begun flipping channels. He put his Christmas present under the tree next to hers, sat down next to her, and looked at the TV.
“So, anything good on?”
“No, you got any good movies?”
“Of course I do.” He began looking through his small collection. “Top Gun, Midway, Memphis Belle---“
Mac cut him off. “You got anything that doesn’t involve planes?”
Harm grinned sheepishly, “Of course I do,” he said defensively as he began searching again.
“Wait, never mind. I found something. ‘A Christmas Story’ is just starting. I *love* that movie.”
“Is that the one where the guy sees what things would be like if he were dead?”
“No, silly. That’s ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’ This is about a little boy that wants a Red Rider B B Gun for Christmas.”
“I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure of seeing that movie,” Harm said dryly.
“Aw, come on. You haven’t seen this movie? You can’t be serious! You don’t remember everyone telling him ‘you’ll shoot your eye out’?” Mac was incredulous.
“No, can’t say that I have.”
“Then, it’s settled. You absolutely *have* to see this movie! It’s a classic. Besides, it’s really funny.”
“Sounds like I don’t have a choice.”
“Just shut up and watch the movie, sailor.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Chapter 2
Sat. Dec. 25th 1700 EST
Harm’s Apartment
North of Union Station
By the end of the movie, Mac was snuggled up against Harm and he had his arm casually draped around her. [This feels so nice. Maybe we are finally getting somewhere], Mac thought to herself.
“So what are you making me for dinner?” Mac said as she turned to look at him. She suddenly found breathing difficult as she realized how dangerously close their faces were.
Harm was having the same breathing problems and managed to get out “Uh, it’s a surprise,” when he found his voice.
Mac broke eye contact and regained her composure, looking toward the kitchen. “Well, you have one hungry marine here, so I suggest you get up and start cooking,” Mac said with a smile, although she secretly did not want him to leave. The intensity of his gaze and the feel of his arm around her were almost more than she could bear. [Snap out of it, MacKenzie! You have to spend the rest of the weekend with him and you can’t freak out every time he touches you or looks at you!]
Harm reluctantly released her and stood up, instantly missing the feel of her next to him. “Just make yourself comfortable while I prepare a Rabb specialty guaranteed to be better than hospital food!”
“As long as there’s real meat in it, then I’m happy!”
“Believe me, I am quite aware of your dietary requirements!” Harm laughed as he made his way to the kitchen. [How am I going to make it through the rest of this weekend without losing myself?] He wondered to himself as he began preparing dinner.
Mac tried to watch TV while Harm cooked, but she found herself watching him more than the TV. [Compared to me, Harm is a great cook! Mac laughed to herself. I wonder if all his fighter jock friends know what a good cook he is? He’s just so good at everything he does: flying, investigating, interrogating witnesses, arguing cases, kissing…KISSING! Where did *that* come from?] Mac’s thoughts were suddenly transported back to that pivotal night on the Admiral’s porch. It had been more than three and a half years since that night, but she remembered that kiss like it was yesterday. In that moment, time had stood still, burning every sensation into the fabric of her memory. She could still remember the feel of his arms holding her tight, his warm lips pressed to hers, his tongue…
“Mac!” His voice startled her and she jumped back into reality.
“I’m sorry. I must have zoned out there for a minute.”
“I’ve said three times that dinner was ready. Are you sure you’re okay? It’s not like you to ignore an announcement about food,” Harm said with a look of concern and bewilderment.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking,” Mac muttered, slightly embarrassed.
“Thinking about…?”
“Nothing.”
“Come on, Mac. You don’t ignore food just because you are thinking about ‘nothing.’”
“I, uh, I just don’t want to talk about it right now.” She truly *did* want to talk about the “thing” between them, as they usually called it. But she just wasn’t sure how to start that conversation, or if they were even ready for that talk yet. [Maybe before this weekend is over.] Besides, her stomach was starting to grumble. “Let’s eat. I’m starving.”
“Well, at least you sound more like yourself now.”
“What are we having for dinner?”
“Chicken Fettucini Alfredo. It may not be red meat, but it is fattening enough to meet your specifications,” Harm quipped as he brought her a plate.
*****
“That was delicious,” Mac said as she finished off her second helping. “It sure beats what I’ve been eating! I wish I could help you clean up the kitchen, but I’ll just have to owe you one instead,” Mac smiled sweetly from the couch.
“I’m holding you to that, ninja-girl,” Harm said with a laugh as he took her plate.
After cleaning up the kitchen, Harm went over to the Christmas tree, got their gifts, and then sat down next to Mac.
“OK, who goes first?”
“It’s your apartment, and your present is the biggest, so you go first.”
“Well, if you insist.” Harm tore off the paper to reveal a stunning picture of a Tomcat flying through the clouds toward a breathtakingly beautiful sunset. The caption simply said “Eternity”.
For a few seconds, Harm was speechless. “I don’t know what to say. It’s beautiful, Mac. Where on earth did you find this?”
“I have my sources. I thought it would be perfect in the big empty space above your sofa.” Mac gestured with her head.
“Yeah, I never could find the right picture to go there. I guess I just needed you to find it for me. Thank you.” Harm took her in his arms and gave her a big hug.
Mac was relieved that he liked the picture. She had had her doubts about the caption, since that one word had the power to evoke memories of a painful event on a ferry years ago. But otherwise that picture had been so perfect that she just had to buy it. Besides, that word didn’t bother her anymore. She was finally beginning to understand why he had said “Not yet” on that fateful night, and she was grateful that he hadn’t rushed into things if he wasn’t ready for a commitment then. And lately *she* had been the one pushing away, in effect, telling *him* “not yet”. But now, she felt as if they were both almost ready to fully commit to each other. After all, he had told her at the Admiral’s Dining Out that he wanted to be a part of her life, and had even offered to go through with the baby deal, no matter what that would entail. And then at the hospital, he had said that nothing had changed and that he was still there. Then she remembered his words on the beach that day [“When you are ready, let me know.”] Then the realization stuck her. [I guess he is still waiting on me. So, am I really ready? Ready for eternity?]
“Mac!” Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the sound of his voice. “You’re zoning out again. Are you sure everything’s okay?”
“Yeah, I’ve just had a lot on my mind lately.” She smiled nervously, realizing that his arms were still around her.
“Care to share?”
“Maybe later. I still have a gift to open don’t I?” She quickly changed the subject.
“Yeah, you do,” Harm said as he released her and handed her the small box.
Mac tore off the paper and took in a deep breath as she opened the box. Inside was a gold chain with a beautiful jade pendant and matching earrings.
“It’s the closest thing to marine green I could find.”
Mac’s smile was radiant. “It’s perfect. They’re beautiful. Thank you!”
Now it was Mac’s turn to give him a hug. As she held him in her arms, Commander McCool’s words came back to her. [”Isn’t Harm the one you always intended to be with?” Yeah, she was right. And before this weekend is over I am going to find a way to make this work. I HAVE to!]
Just then the phone rang, interrupting her thoughts. She reluctantly pulled back and released him as he stood to get the phone, an irritated scowl on his face.
“Rabb?…Bud! Harriet!” The scowl was replaced by a friendly smile. “Yeah, she’s right here on my couch…No, it’s not too late. We just finished exchanging Christmas gifts…Sure, here she is.” Harm handed the phone to Mac.
“Hey…I’m feeling okay, all things considered…Yeah, he’s taking good care of me,” Mac winked at Harm. “Sorry we missed everything last night. I’m sure it was a lot more fun than where we were…Yes, I’ll be sure to take it easy. Harm will make sure of that…Merry Christmas to you too…Bye.”
Mac handed the phone back to Harm. Just as he was about to set it down on the coffee table, it rang again.
“Rabb?…Hello, General!”
Harm wandered into the kitchen and proceeded to update the General with the details of Mac’s situation. As he was hanging up the phone, Mac rolled her eyes and suggested, “You might as well call Sturgis, too. He’ll be the next to call.” [Besides, the moment is already gone now!]
“You’re probably right.” So Harm called Sturgis to fill him in as well. When he returned the phone to its cradle on the wall, he noticed that Mac had fallen asleep on the sofa. [I guess that kills the evening. Just when things were going so well!]
Harm decided it was a good time to call his mother and wish her a “Merry Christmas,” since he hadn’t spoken to her in a while. He went into the bedroom to call her, so as not to wake Mac. Inevitably, she asked about Mac, so he had to tell her about the car accident. Harm rolled his eyes as his mother squealed like a schoolgirl when he told her that Mac had to stay with him for the weekend. After assuring her that he wasn’t holding back any important details about his love life, he told her goodnight and hung up. [Well, at least one other person is convinced that Mac and I belong together!]
He wasn’t tired yet, so he made his way over to his desk to check his email. From where he sat, he was able to gaze at Mac’s sleeping form, which proved to be a considerable distraction as he tried to concentrate on the computer screen.
An hour and a half later, Mac woke up and her eyes wandered over to where Harm was sitting. “Hey, flyboy. What’s so interesting on that computer at this hour?”
“Actually, nothing. I’m really just wasting the time that I should be sleeping,” Harm said with a yawn.
“So go to bed.”
“I would, but I was planning on sleeping on the couch, and it is currently occupied.”
“You are not sleeping on the couch for my sake!”
“Why not? I certainly can’t let you sleep on it. You are in enough pain already. If you slept all night on that uncomfortable couch your muscles would feel even worse in the morning. The doctor released you into my care and I am going to make sure that you get the rest you need.”
“Well, if *you* sleep on this couch, *your* muscles would be in pain in the morning. There is no sense in both of us being miserable.”
They both stubbornly stared at each other. Until the corners of Mac’s mouth twitched and she began to giggle.
“What’s so funny?”
“It’s so obvious.” Mac smiled mischievously.
“What is so obvious?”
“The logical solution.”
“Which is?”
“That neither one of us should sleep on the couch.”
Harm’s eyes grew wide at the suggestion.
“Come on, sailor. It’s not like we haven’t shared a bed before. We’re both adults. Besides, you are supposed to be keeping a close watch on me, right?” Mac asked suggestively.
“Yeah, doctor’s orders.” Harm started to smile, following her logic.
“And just how are you supposed to do that if you are on the other side of the apartment?”
“Well, you have a good argument, counselor. So there’s no point in objecting, is there?” he asked playfully.
“You would just be overruled,” Mac laughed.
“Well, if that’s the way it’s going to be…” Harm went over to the couch and picked her up and started walking toward the bedroom.
“Harm, what are you doing?”
[What I have always dreamed of doing—carrying you into my bedroom.] He thought to himself, but aloud he said, “I’m just taking advantage of the fact that I can spoil you and you can’t do anything about it.”
“Well, don’t get used to it. And don’t let that leak out to anyone. I have a reputation to uphold!” Mac’s eyes danced with laughter.
“Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me,” Harm laughed back.
Harm laid her down on the bed and fought the urge to lie down on top of her and kiss her senseless.
“I guess you need to change into your pajamas or something, so I’ll just go turn off my computer while you change. Let me know if you need any help,” he said playfully and turned to walk down the steps.
“You wish, flyboy,” she called after him with a shake of her head.
Mac carefully and very slowly made her way into the bathroom and got ready for bed. It was a painful struggle to get out of her clothes. When she succeeded in getting an oversized T-shirt on, she just sat there holding her shorts and debating. She finally decided that the T-shirt covered the important parts and the shorts weren’t necessary, so she threw them back into her bag and made her way back into the bedroom.
“Mac, you okay in there?” Harm asked as he entered the bedroom. He almost did a double take at the sight of her emerging from his bathroom wearing nothing but a T-shirt. “Well, at least you left the lingerie at home this time,” he quickly recovered.
“Maybe next time,” Mac said with a wink as she got into bed.
Harm stripped down to his boxers and slipped into bed next to Mac, unsure of what to do next, and scared of overstepping the boundaries. [The problem is, I don’t know where the boundaries are anymore.]
“Harm?” Mac’s big brown eyes searched his.
“Yeah, Mac?” Harm swallowed hard.
“Thanks again for being there for me.”
“Mac, you know I will always be there for you.” Harm looked deep into her eyes, trying to convey the sincerity of his words to her.
Mac thought back to that night, just a few months ago, when she had asked him if he would always be there. He had said it then, and he was saying it again.
“Thank you.” Mac leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. “Goodnight, flyboy.”
“Goodnight, ninja-girl.”
*****
Mac had been awake for 27 minutes and could not seem to calm her nerves enough to fall asleep. [How can I, when the love of my life is lying less than two feet away from me?] She thought back to all the other times they had slept together, not just in the same room, but *together*: in the Appalachian Mountains, in the Afghan desert, in the hotel in Paraguay. All those times were marked by fear, desperation, frustration, uncertainty, misunderstanding, and so many other issues.
But this time was different. [This time, there are no bullet wounds, no poachers, no mines, no bombs, no…just what *was* the problem in Paraguay?] Mac shuddered as she thought about how they had treated each other during that whole ordeal. [”Location doesn’t change who we are.” Well, it sure changed who we were in Paraguay! Why had we both acted like that and said the things we did? We were both so stubborn, especially me. I can’t believe I said “never” to him. What was I thinking?] She rolled over and looked at the sleeping man next to her. [And yet he is still here for me.] She dwelled on that reassuring thought as she finally drifted off to sleep.

Harm awoke suddenly to the sound of Mac crying and calling his name. She was tossing and turning in her sleep and had a frightened look on her face.
“Mac, what’s wrong?” Deeply concerned, he touched her shoulder and she sat up suddenly and called his name again.
“Mac, it’s me. I’m here.” Harm put his arms around her and was relieved that she didn’t resist. “You’re safe. Everything’s okay.” He rubbed her back with one hand and brushed the hair out of her face with the other.
His words and actions seemed to soothe her and she soon calmed down and relaxed in his embrace. Gently, he lay back down, bringing her with him. Keeping his arms around her, he drew her close and held her until sleep came again.

Harm’s Apartment
North of Union Station
As Mac’s eyes drifted open, she became aware of the fact that she was not at home. When her eyes adjusted, it all came back to her. The car accident, the hospital, Harm’s apartment, Harm’s bed…HARM’S BED! She was in Harm’s bed, WITH HIM! A small smile crept across her face as she rolled over to find…no Harm.
Then she became aware of sounds coming from the kitchen. Her nose told her that he was cooking breakfast, and not just any breakfast. He was making eggs, bacon, and sausage! As she struggled to sit up, Harm came walking into the bedroom carrying a tray of food.
“Harm, you didn’t have to do this!” Mac protested as Harm helped her sit up and put a tray in front of her.
“I know. But a long time ago, you said that most men make you breakfast after spending the night together. So the way I see it, I’m long overdue and I probably owe you several breakfasts!” he quipped as he got his own tray and sat down next to her.
After devouring most of the food on her plate, Mac said, “Okay, ‘fess up. I know you don’t normally keep bacon and sausage around this place. Did you disobey the doctor’s orders and leave me here by myself while you went to the store?” she scolded him playfully.
Harm grinned sheepishly. “Yeah, I just went down to that little store on the corner to grab a few things that I knew you would want. I figured that if I was going to serve you breakfast in bed, I’d better do it right! I did leave a note for you, just in case you woke up before I got back, but I guess you didn’t even miss me, sleepyhead,” he said with a wink.
“Well, I do appreciate it. You take good care of me.” Mac smiled shyly.
“Always,” Harm said in a serious tone, meeting her eyes before she nervously looked down at her plate. He wanted to ask about her nightmare, but before he could, Mac changed the subject and asked for seconds.
The moment gone, he took her plate and went into the kitchen. Breakfast continued with nothing more than light banter and small talk.
“Now that I have satisfied my stomach, I could really use a shower.”
“Mac, I didn’t even think about that! We should have stayed at your place. You at least have a tub. Are you sure you will be okay standing in the shower?” Harm asked, his face full of concern.
“Relax, sailor. I am much better than I was yesterday. I’ll be careful and lean on the wall if I have to. But if it makes you feel better, you can sit right outside in case I need you,” Mac said teasingly.
“Well, I’m glad you’re feeling better, but don’t hesitate to call me if you need any help.”
Mac rolled her eyes.
“Mac, I’m serious. I’ll even be a perfect gentleman and not look where I’m not supposed to.”
With a sarcastic “Hmph!” Mac made her way into the bathroom.
Harm was cleaning up from breakfast when he heard someone at the door. He opened it to find Bud and Harriet.
“We come bearing gifts.” Harriet held out two lattes.
“Well, if you bring something from Starbucks, you are most welcome in my apartment. Come on in. We just finished breakfast.” Harm smiled as he took the lattes and ushered Bud and Harriet inside. “I’m sure Mac would rather have this than my coffee any day!”
Harriet immediately noticed that the couch did not look like it had been slept on. She mentally scolded herself. [That is none of your business. He probably just already put away the bedding.]
“I’ll go tell Mac you’re here,” Harm said as he walked into the bedroom.
“Mac, Bud and Harriet are here, so make sure you’re decent when you come out of the shower.” Harm said jokingly, while Harriet’s eyes widened.
“Harriet’s here? Could you send her in? I need some help getting dressed.”
“Hey, I can help with that,” Harm laughed mischievously before heading back to the living room to get a shocked Harriet.
Mac had made the mistake of selecting a blouse that buttoned in the back and her sore arms weren’t cooperating. Ordinarily, she would not have hesitated to ask Harm to help her with something so innocent, but she figured asking Harriet would be safer. [This whole situation is probably uncomfortable for them.] Mac laughed to herself.
“What was it you…needed…Ma’am?” Harriet stuttered as her eyes roamed over the bed, with rumpled sheets on both sides and two breakfast trays still there. She quickly hid her surprise and looked at Mac as she came out of the bathroom.
“Just some help with the buttons. You could do it faster than me because you’re not recovering from a run-in with a tree,” Mac joked as Harriet began fastening the buttons. “I wasn’t thinking when I picked out this blouse, and I had already put these pants on when I realized my problem. I didn’t bring anything else with me that would go with these pants.”
“All done. I brought you a latte from Starbucks.”
“Oh, thank you! I needed some caffeine and I was dreading the *harmful* coffee they serve around here.”
“Hey, I heard that!” Harm yelled from the living room, where he and Bud were talking.
“Oh, Ma’am, lean on me while you go down those stairs!” Harriet rushed to Mac’s side as she began to ease her way down.
“Thanks. I hate having to depend on people, but it really is encouraging to know I have such caring friends.”
“Ma’am, we’ll do anything you need us to. Just name it,” Bud piped in from the living room.
“Thanks. You guys are great.”
Mac eased down on the sofa next to Harm and he passed her latte to her.
[They sure are sitting awfully close. And they seem to be looking at one another a lot when they think the other is not looking.] Harriet mused. [Don’t be silly. You are probably reading way too much into this. They are just friends. He is probably just feeling a little protective of her, as he should, given the events of the past two days.] Harriet reasoned.
But as the conversation progressed, Harriet couldn’t help but notice the way Harm and Mac seemed so comfortable with each other. It was almost like the way they used to be several years ago, yet there was something more. She couldn’t pinpoint it exactly, but she knew that it was making her uncomfortable, like she and Bud were intruding on something private. She kept trying to catch Bud’s eye and signal that it was time to leave, but he seemed oblivious. Finally, she spoke up. “Bud, I don’t think we should take up any more of their time. Mac needs to rest, and I am sure Harm has things he needs to be doing. And Mikey could probably use some relief from babysitting.”
“Yeah, you are probably right. It was nice visiting with you, Sir, Ma’am.” Bud said as he got up from the chair, reaching for Harriet’s hand as she rose from the couch. “Glad you’re gonna be okay, Ma’am.”
“Yes, we’re both thankful you are alright.”
“Thanks.”
When Harm closed the door after them, he said, “I guess it is my turn in the shower. Make yourself at home.”
“I think I already did that yesterday!” Mac laughed.
While Harm showered, Mac tried to find something on TV, but couldn’t seem to find anything of interest. And later when Harm emerged from the bedroom wearing jeans and a tight-fitting shirt, whatever was on TV suddenly became even less interesting. Mac watched him as he brought the rest of the breakfast dishes from the bedroom, thoroughly enjoying the view.
When the last of the dishes had been washed and put away, he came and sat down on the couch next to her. Seeing her disinterest in the TV, he clicked it off and turned to look at her.
“Mac, you had some sort of nightmare last night that really had me worried. Do you want to tell me about it?” He asked, his eyes genuinely concerned.
“Did I wake you? I’m sorry.”
“Don’t worry about it. What was it about?”
“It was about the accident. I was driving along, I hit a tree, and the next thing I know I am in an ambulance with a hundred things going through my head. And then you were there comforting me and reassuring me.”
“Mac, that last part wasn’t a dream.”
“It wasn’t? That really happened?”
“Yes. You were crying and calling my name and you looked so scared. So I just held you until you calmed down.”
“Oh.” Mac suddenly felt very shy and had difficulty maintaining eye contact.
“Mac, why were you calling out for me? What was going on?” Harm reached out to touch her arm, trying to reassure her again.
“I, um, I didn’t know what was happening, how bad I was hurt, whether I would live. I just felt like I had to see you. There were so many things I wanted to, needed to say. I just couldn’t bear the thought of you not knowing how I really feel.”
Harm was speechless. He didn’t know what to say.
Mac continued, knowing that her opening up was their only chance. “You told me to let you know when I was ready to talk. Well, I was ready but I was afraid that I was going to lose that opportunity.”
Harm’s heart filled with joy at her admission of being ready to talk. He had been waiting for her to make a move. He didn’t dare pressure her anymore. He knew better than to push her if she wasn’t ready.
Mac’s eyes were starting to tear up. “That’s why I was crying. I thought I was never going to get to tell you how important you are to me.”
Harm’s eyes were glistening, too. “When they told me you had been in an accident, I felt the same way. I knew I had to get there soon before I lost my chance to tell you how much you mean to me.”
“Really?” Mac was hearing his words, but all her personal demons still made her cling to her doubt. “But what about Alicia?”
“Alicia? What does she have to do with anything?” Harm was truly dumbfounded.
“A couple of months ago, I came to your apartment to talk, and she was here and you were making dinner for her. I just assumed…”
“Well, you assumed wrong!” Harm quickly cut her off. “Alicia came over because she needed some advice on a case she was working on, that’s all.”
“I bet she was hoping for more than just *advice*,” Mac said sarcastically.
“But advice is *all* she got. I promise.”
Mac wanted to believe him, but she couldn’t let go of her insecurities.
Harm saw the shields go up and instantly recognized the inner battle that Mac was fighting. He had fought the same battle many times. He knew what he had to do to break down those walls for good.
“Mac.” He took her hands in his. “Maybe in another time, I might have been interested in Alicia, but not now. Not when I am already in love with someone else.”
Mac searched his eyes, hoping only to find sincerity in them and being rewarded with a look of love that made her heart jump for joy. Her breath caught in her throat and she stumbled over her words.
“Did you just say, I mean, did I hear you right?”
“Yeah.” Harm looked deep into her eyes. “I love you, Mac.”
Whatever she was going to say was lost as his lips descended onto hers and his arms went around her. His kiss was gentle and tender, yet intense at the same time. She wrapped her arms around his neck and tried to convey everything she felt in that one kiss. When he finally broke contact and pulled back, Mac was almost breathless.
“I love you too, Harm. In fact, I have been in love with you for so long that I am not sure when it happened.” Mac admitted while stroking the back of his neck. His smile encouraging her, she continued. “I think that’s why none of my other relationships ever worked out. I was with people that my head told me I should be with, but my heart already belonged to you.” She lightly kissed him again.
“I can say the same thing, Mac. I never understood why my girlfriends always felt so threatened by you. They could see it, but I was oblivious. It took me a while, but I finally figured it out. I only hoped that you would realize it too. That’s why I told you to come to me when you were ready. I knew you needed to come to that conclusion on your own.”
“Actually, I didn’t exactly figure it out on my own,” Mac confessed, then realized what she had said. She hated admitting that she had been to see a shrink. [Why not? This is Harm. He knows more about me than anyone else has ever known! And we are finally at the point where we are totally honest with each other, so there is no going back now!]
As Harm looked at her with a confused expression on his face, she somewhat reluctantly began. “Commander McCool is the one that switched on the light bulb for me.” Harm blinked his eyes and looked at her questioningly, and Mac explained, “ Commander McCool is the psychiatrist that the Admiral sent me to after killing Sadik. I went to see her again a couple of months ago. We ended up talking about everything. And your name came up a lot. I never realized what a big part of my life you are. You’re the one I have *always* turned to when I needed someone. After dissecting all my failed relationships, she helped me see that you are the one I have wanted all along. And suddenly it all made sense.”
Harm smiled and brushed his lips against hers. “It does make sense now, doesn’t it?”
“Yeah.” She responded with another kiss, sliding her arms around his shoulders as his arms reached around her waist. He rubbed her back as he deepened the kiss. Mac dug her hands in his hair and began to lose herself in the desire and passion of the moment. The next thing she knew, she was leaning back against the armrest and he was on top of her, his lips crushing hers with an increasing intensity and hunger. Then, suddenly, he pulled back.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking. This could get out of hand really quick.” He sat up and took her hands in his and gently rubbed them with his thumbs. “And as much as I would like to keep going, you are in no condition to do so.”
Mac reluctantly agreed.
“Besides, I think we should take things slowly. We have known each other too long and our friendship is too valuable for us to mess this up by going too fast.”
“I agree. I don’t want to rush this. I want to take the time to enjoy every minute of it. And it’s all still a little overwhelming right now,” Mac admitted with a shy smile.
“Not too mention amazing.” Harm flashed her a big grin.
“So what are we going to do about the office?”
“I don’t know. Maybe we shouldn’t say anything at first and then just take it one day at a time.”
“Yeah, we should probably give ourselves some time to get used to this before we spring it on other people. But eventually we are going to have to tell the General.”
Harm groaned. He knew what that meant.
“Harm, think about it. Bud and Harriet were allowed to stay together. Maybe the General can do the same for us. Like transfer one of us to the Pentagon or something, but keep us on permanent loan to JAG. He’d have to be careful how he assigned cases, but I think he would work with us to keep his two top lawyers.”
“You’re right.” He kissed her again. “I think he would. He likes you. You’re a marine.” Harm laughed.
“Harm, he likes you too. You have been quite well behaved since he came.”
“And I’m usually not?” Harm feigned a hurt expression.
“Well, lets just say that you have been a little creative in the past and leave it at that.”
“Yeah, it’s probably wise to leave it there,” he joked before his lips met hers again.
Mac suddenly had an idea. “Lets go out tonight!”
“What? You are supposed to be resting!” he protested.
“Oh I’ll be fine. I can sit in a restaurant just as easily as I can sit here,” Mac reasoned. “And we deserve to go out tonight. On a date. We’ve known each other over 8 years and have never been on a real date, so lets go out.” Mac’s eyes danced with excitement and Harm couldn’t resist.
“You are hard to say no to, marine. We’ll go out tonight, but only if you promise to take it easy until then.”
“You have my word.” Mac’s stomach growled. “It must be time for lunch. Can we order a pizza?”
“Sure, one half meat lovers half veggie lovers coming right up,” Harm stood up to make the call, his hands lingering in hers for a split second.
As Harm was on the phone, Mac couldn’t help but think about what a wonderful weekend this had turned out to be. Things had worked out so well, and it had happened so easily! [We should have had this talk sooner! No, I’m not going to look back at all the “what ifs”. We just weren’t both ready until now. I’m only going to look forward. And looking forward is so promising!]
“Pizza will be here in half and hour. In the meantime, let’s see how that picture looks over the sofa.” Harm said as he went to get his toolbox.
After much discussion over the proper placement of the picture, Mac won out in the end. Her eye level was closer to the average person’s, she had argued effectively. As they admired the picture, the pizza arrived.
“That was quick.”
“Good, because I am starving.”
“When are you ever *not* starving?” Harm teased.
“When I’m full,” she shot back triumphantly.
*****
“See, now I’m full, and therefore, *not* starving.” Mac leaned back against the sofa.
“Well, you *should* be full, after eating your entire side of the pizza,” Harm laughed. “Are you sure you will have room for dinner on our date tonight?”
“Of course I will. That is still hours away. I’m sure I’ll be hungry again by then.”
“I’m sure.” Harm rolled his eyes.
Mac yawned.
“Why don’t you take a nap? It is Sunday afternoon, after all, and you just gorged yourself on pizza. Sounds like a perfect excuse for a nap. Not to mention that you promised you would rest before we went out tonight.”
“Yeah, a nap *does* sound good to me.” Mac yawned again as she lay down on the sofa.
Harm bent down and brushed a kiss across her forehead. “Sleep tight, marine.”
Harm busied himself around the apartment: paying bills, straightening a few drawers, putting things away, surfing the internet, all while trying to be quiet so Mac could rest.
A couple of hours later, he noticed that Mac had woken up and found some of his photo albums.
“Harm, who is this?”
“Well, let’s see.” Harm sat down beside Mac and looked at the photo she was pointing to. “Oh, that’s Grandma Rabb when she was much younger.”
“You can tell she has a lot of spunk. No wonder you named your plane after her.” Mac laughed.
“Yes, she is definitely a unique lady. One day soon I’d like to take you to Pennsylvania to meet her. You’d like her. And I know she’d like you.” Harm smiled.
The rest of the afternoon was spent poring over photo albums and talking about their families.
“Harm, let’s go to the Wall after dinner tonight.”
“No, you need to take it easy.”
“Nonsense. I still feel bad that you didn’t get to go on Christmas Eve.”
“Mac, I told you it is okay. I’ll go on New Years Eve or something.”
“No, I want to go with you and I want to go tonight. After looking at all these pictures and hearing your stories, I feel like I really know your dad now. And I think he ought to get to know me too, since I plan to be around for a while,” Mac said with a wink.
“Well, if I have anything to say about it, you will be.” Harm leaned in for a kiss.
“So, are we going to the Wall tonight?”
“Yeah, I’d like to if you are up to it.”
“Of course I am. I guess we’d better go get ready for our *date*. Come on, flyboy. Let’s get dressed.”
“Aye, Aye, Ma’am,” Harm said playfully as they rose from the sofa.
“So, where are you taking me? And how dressed up should I be?”
“It’s a surprise. Wear a dress, but nothing too fancy.”
“Good, because if I needed something fancy, I’d have to go to my place. I only have what was already packed in my duffel bag. But I think I have something you’ll like.” Mac smiled suggestively.
Chapter 4
Harm was straightening his tie one last time as Mac emerged from the bathroom wearing a simple but stunning red dress. It clung to her slender figure and was just low-cut enough to make Harm consider skipping dinner altogether.
“You look beautiful.”
“Thanks. You’re not so bad yourself,” Mac said with a flirtatious smile as he gathered her into his arms for a kiss. “We’d better get going.”
With his arm around her for support, they slowly made their way down to his Lexus where he helped her into the SUV.”
“Mac, are you sure you feel like going out?”
“Harm, this is finally our first *real* date. I am not going to let anything stop me now. And I’m feeling much better now, anyway.”
“Good, but let me know if you start to feel bad.”
“I won’t feel bad, as long as you’re around.” Mac smiled sweetly as he shut her door.
While they drove to the restaurant, Mac spent most of the time trying to guess where they were going. It was only when they were almost there that she figured it out.
As they were walking into the restaurant, Harm once again put his arm around her waist. Mac didn’t seem to mind at all. She liked having his arm there regardless of whether or not she actually needed it there for physical support. With him so close, she felt safe, protected, loved—all those things that in the past she had denied she needed. It was a rather nice feeling, she had to admit. One that she was quickly getting used to. It seemed so natural, like they had been together for years. [Well, we *have* been together for years, just not at this level.]
When they were led to their table, Harm helped her into her chair. Once he was seated, he automatically reached for her hand, holding it until their food came.
*****
“You know, Mac,” he said when they had finished eating. “This is really nice. Just sitting here with you, enjoying a quiet, romantic dinner, talking about everything *but* work. I mean, working dinners are nice in that I get to spend time with you, but this is a wonderful change of pace. We should do this more often,” he said with a gleam in his eye.
“Yes, we should definitely do this on a regular basis from now on. I insist!” Mac laughed.
“On a more serious note, Mac. Two days ago, you were feeling like you were ruining Christmas for me. On the contrary. You have made this, by far, the best Christmas of my life!” Harm smiled, reached for her hand, and squeezed it.
Mac squeezed back and replied, “And, despite my car accident, you have made this the best Christmas for me, too.”
As they both stared into each other’s eyes, neither noticed the looks they were getting from the other patrons around them. They were unknowingly drawing attention to themselves with their intense looks of love and obvious devotion to each other, but both were oblivious to their surroundings. So oblivious, in fact, that they didn’t even notice the figure approaching their table.
“It’s nice to see that you two finally got things right after all this time.” The familiar voice snapped them back into reality.
“Admiral?” “Sir?” They both jumped in unison, surprised.
“No, it’s AJ now. And you can both relax. I’m retired, remember?”
“Right.” They both tried to hide their embarrassed grins.
“So, did this” AJ gestured toward their enjoined hands “just happen recently or have I really been away that long?”
“Well, actually Sir, I mean, AJ, Mac was in a car accident on Christmas Eve and I have been taking care of her while she recovers and it just sort of happened.” Harm looked over at Mac and smiled.
“But it has been in the works for a while,” Mac added, returning Harm’s smile.
“So it has, so it has,” AJ agreed, smiling as well. “Well, I’m sincerely happy for you. Let me know when the wedding will be. Carry on.”
And with that, he walked off, leaving the two surprised JAG officers alone again. Neither one said anything about AJ’s wedding comment, but silently they took strength from the confidence of his words. They stayed there for a while, talking, laughing, and just enjoying one another’s company.
“You know, if we are going to go to the Wall, we’d better get going.” Harm stood up and helped Mac out of her chair. With their arms around each other, they walked out of the restaurant, turning heads as they went.

Sun. Dec. 26th 2030 EST
Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial
Washington, DC
Harm and Mac slowly made their way to the familiar part of the Wall where Harm had spent so many Christmas Eves. As they stopped in front of the panel that bore Harm’s father’s name, Mac looked up at the man who held her so close. His expression was firm, but his eyes betrayed him. In them, she saw a glimpse of a distant sadness--a trace of pain, numbed through the years, but still present, nevertheless. With one hand, he reached out to trace his father’s name, the other arm still wrapped tightly around Mac. She stroked his back in a sign of support, but said nothing, not wanting to interfere. He stood there in silence for a long time, lost in his thoughts.
Finally, he began to speak.
“Hi, Dad. Sorry I am a little late this year, but I have a good reason. You see, someone very special to me was in a car accident and I felt like I needed to be there for her.” Harm stole a glance at Mac, who smiled at him reassuringly. “In fact, she is the reason we are here tonight. I was going to wait until later in the week, but she insisted we come tonight. She knows how important this is to me.”
Harm squeezed her tight and continued. “Dad, you remember Mac, right? She has been here a few times with me before. Well, you need to get to know her, Dad,” Harm turned to look deep into Mac’s eyes, “because she is going to be here with me *from now on*.” Harm slowly emphasized those last words and hoped that he wasn’t saying too much. His eyes bore deep into her soul with a look of absolute devotion. Mac’s eyes grew wide with amazement and her expression was one of questioning hope. He nodded slightly and smiled, then gestured toward the Wall with his head, signaling her that it was her turn to speak.
Still dazed by the implications of his words and with her heart racing, she could barely find her voice. Not wanting to break eye contact, but knowing she needed to if she was going to be able to speak, she turned toward the Wall and took a deep breath.
“Mr. Rabb?” Mac hesitated. “Um, your son has told me all about you. So much that I almost feel like I know you. I have been with him throughout the last few years of his journey to find out what happened to you. And he has been there for me more times than I can count.” Mac turned back to look deep into his eyes again. “And I plan to continue to be there for him *from now on*.” She emphasized the same words he did to acknowledge her understanding, then nodded slightly as he had to convey her acceptance.
Harm’s heart leaped in his chest. He pulled her closer and bent down to brush his lips across hers in a gentle and tender kiss. When their lips parted, Mac searched his eyes and face and found a look of unconditional love that she had never seen on any other man. This must be what true love is like! Her thoughts must have been obvious, because she saw the same wonder and joy that she felt reflected on his face.
After what seemed like an eternity of gazing into each other’s eyes, Harm was the first to speak. “We probably should go,” he said softly.
“Yeah, people are probably starting to stare, “ Mac said half-jokingly but with her eyes still on him, not wanting to look away to confirm her assumption.
Harm turned back to the Wall. “Good night, Dad. We will be back again. Together.” Then, looking back at Mac, “I promise.”
With one last simple kiss, Harm led her back to the Lexus and began the drive home. At first, neither one spoke, afraid to break the magic of what had just transpired at the Wall. Finally, Harm cleared his throat and broke the silence.
“Thank you for insisting I come tonight, and for wanting to be there with me.”
“Well, after what just happened, I think you’re stuck with me, flyboy.” Mac smiled.
Harm reached over and took her hand. “That’s all I ever wanted.” He squeezed her hand and flashed her a grin before returning his eyes to the road.
Still holding his hand, Mac replied softly, “Me too.”
*****
Harm closed the door of his apartment and gathered Mac in his arms.
“I don’t want this weekend to end,” he breathed into her hair.
“Me neither.”
“Stay here again tonight.”
Mac pulled back to look at him. “I thought you wanted to take things slow. Or did what happened at the Wall change all that?”
“Well, it may have upped the timetable,” Harm grinned, “but I still don’t want to rush.” At Mac’s questioning look, he hastily added, “But there is no reason we can’t just hold each other tonight. I realized this morning how nice it is to wake up with you in my arms. I think I could get used to that really fast.”
“I think I could, too.” Mac leaned in to meet his lips halfway.
“Come on, let’s go to bed, ninja-girl.” Harm smiled playfully as he led her to the bedroom, thinking how nice those words sounded.
Mac went into the bathroom and changed into a T-shirt much faster than the night before, but not without some residual soreness. When she came back into the bedroom, Harm had already stripped down to his boxers and gotten in bed.
As she made her way to the bed, Harm jokingly said with a pout, “Hey, you said you’d wear lingerie next time.”
“Very funny, flyboy, but I don’t have any with me. Besides, if all we are going to do is *sleep* in each other’s arms, then I don’t think lingerie is necessary. In fact, it would probably create a problem,” Mac laughed suggestively as she slipped in beside him.
“Yeah, you’re probably right,” he agreed as he put his arm around her and pulled her close.
“So, do you want to hang out here or at your apartment tomorrow while I’m at work?”
“What do you mean? I’m going to work too,” Mac protested.
“Mac, I’m sure the General would understand if you want to take another day to rest. You don’t have to be in court at all this week and things will be pretty slow anyway. I can bring you your case files and you can look over them at home,” Harm reasoned.
“Harm, I can sit around and look at them just as easily in the office as I can at home. If I am well enough to go out to dinner, then I am well enough to go to work. Besides, if I am at the office, then I can at least see you part of the time,” Mac countered with a triumphant smile, knowing she had him.
“Well, who am I to argue with a jarhead once she makes up her mind?” Harm laughed as Mac playfully slapped him on the chest.
“Harm?”
“Hmmm?”
“Do you realize that we are laying here in bed together and we are talking about work?”
“Well, that probably *is* the safest topic to discuss, given the circumstances.”
“Yeah, you’re right.” Mac snuggled closer. “Harm?”
“Yeah?”
“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
Mac tilted her face up towards his and gently kissed him. Then she lay her head back down on his shoulder. At some point, Mac wasn’t sure when, Harm had started trailing his hand up and down her arm. She absentmindedly began drawing circles on his chest as she thought about the events of the evening.
“Back at the Wall,” Mac hesitated, unsure how to ask the question that had been nagging at her.
“Mm-hmm?”
“Did…we--?”
“Yeah, I think we did.”
“I thought so.”
Suddenly, Harm felt fear rising in his chest. [Oh no. She is having second thoughts!] His throat went dry. He shifted around to look directly at her.
“Are you okay with that?” He asked hopefully, the anticipation of her answer gnawing away at him.
To his relief she smiled. “Yeah, I am *quite* okay with that, sailor,” she said in a low voice.
Both slowly leaned in toward each other, and as their lips met, any doubts or uncertainly they might have felt seemed to melt away. Harm’s arms drew her to him, his need to be closer to her overwhelming him.
Mac responded in kind, tightening her hold on him as if to keep him from getting away. She clung to him as if her life depended on it, an action that in other relationships would have frightened her, but somehow she wasn’t afraid to be needy with him. It wasn’t a sign of weakness anymore. With him it was more like an acceptance of herself. She could be who she was *because* of him. He gave her strength with his unconditional love. That was something that no one else had ever done for her.
Harm deepened the kiss, and he felt himself sliding towards the threshold. He wanted her so bad. He groaned as passion and hunger were building towards an inevitable climax. With all the willpower he could muster, he tore himself away from her and tried to regain his composure.
“Mac, I am quickly losing control. We can’t do this now. If we don’t stop now, we are going to undo all the healing you have done over the past two days. And I, for one, don’t want to have to explain to the doctor why your aches and pains came back.” Harm begged her forgiveness with his eyes.
Mac saw the sincerity in his eyes and reluctantly nodded. He was right. She had probably already overdone it that night and would be paying for it in the morning. Suddenly she smiled as a thought crossed her mind.
“What?”
“I was just picturing the look on the doctor’s face when we try to explain why I am still sore. How we just couldn’t wait until I was better, how he had entrusted me into your care and you ended up jumping my bones before the weekend was over, how—“
“Alright, alright!” Harm was laughing by now. “That was my point exactly. It *would* be pretty embarrassing. And you would probably make me do all the talking while you just stood back and watched.”
“I wouldn’t make you take *all* the heat.” Mac defended herself, but quickly added with a smirk, “Just most of it.”
“And I would get you back, too, and you know it!” Harm playfully laughed.
“I would be counting on it,” Mac laughed back.
When their laughter died down, they both sighed.
“We should get some sleep now. Good night.” Harm placed a gentle kiss on her lips.
“Good night.”
Mac snuggled close to Harm and he tightened his hold on her and they both drifted off to sleep, both destined for pleasant dreams.
Chapter 5
Mon. Dec. 27th 0630 EST
Harm’s Apartment
North of Union Station
Harm’s eyes fluttered open as the alarm clock pierced through the peacefulness of the room. He reached one arm up and hit the snooze button, keeping the other arm firmly around Mac. Mac. He still couldn’t believe that she was snuggled next to him.
The events of the past three days raced through his mind. His head was still spinning from the 180 degree turn his life had taken. And the real clencher was that he and Mac had gotten engaged. Well, he was pretty sure they did. Unofficially, at least. But there would be plenty of time to talk about details later.
As he lay there with her in his arms, he wondered if things would be like this from now on. [Slow down, Rabb! You’re getting way ahead of yourself!] He mentally scolded himself. But he truly wondered what was going to happen tonight, and the next night, and…Surely, she is going to want to go back to her place at some point. Maybe they could switch back and forth between apartments. Or maybe they could pick out a new place…together. Harm smiled at the thought. [I guess we will just have to take things one day at a time.]
Harm gently shook her. “Mac, it’s time to—“
“I know what time it is, Harm. I just want to stay here a few more minutes. I’m finding that I really like waking up in your arms.” Mac looked up to meet his gaze.
“Me too,” he said as he leaned in for a good morning kiss.
After a few minutes the snooze alarm went off again. Harm groaned as he reached to shut it off again.
“I hate Mondays!” he growled as he reluctantly released Mac and pushed himself out of bed.
Mac took in the view before giving in to the inevitable. As she raised herself up and swung her legs around, she grimaced in pain. She quickly tried to mask her discomfort, but it didn’t escape Harm’s notice and he rushed to her side.
“You okay?” he said as his arms went around her.
“Yeah, I think maybe I overdid it last night.” Mac smiled sheepishly, then hastily added, “But it was worth it.”
“Then stay home today and get some rest.” Harm insisted.
“No, I’m going to work!” Mac said defensively.
Harm started to say something in reply, but Mac put a finger to his lips to silence him.
“My mind is made up.”
“Stubborn jarhead.” Despite the sarcastic nature of his words, Harm was grinning from ear to ear. So Mac decided to play along.
“Overprotective squid,” she shot back with a smirk.
“I wouldn’t have to be so overprotective if you weren’t so darn stubborn!”
“Harm, you had over eight years to figure out that I’m stubborn.” At this point, Mac was part joking and part testing him.
“Mac,” Harm’s tone turned serious. “Yes, I know you’re stubborn and I love you anyway. Strike that. I love you *because* of your stubbornness. It’s part of who you are.”
Harm started to walk away to begin getting dressed, but he turned back when he thought he hear a sniffle. When he saw a tear roll down her cheek, he quickly sat down beside her and put his arm around her.
“Mac, what is it? Did I say something wrong?” Harm was noticeably confused.
“No, that’s just it. You didn’t say anything wrong at all. You said everything right.”
“Then why are you crying? I don’t understand.” Harm felt helpless.
“All the men in my life have tried to break me, change me, mold me to fit into their world.” Mac paused and looked into his eyes. “But you aren’t like that. You won’t do that, will you?” The flicker of doubt in her voice tugged at Harm’s heart and he took her hand in his and gently squeezed.
“Mac, I don’t need to do that. You *already* fit into my world. Heck, you already *are* in my world, and have been for quite some time. That was exactly the problem with my previous girlfriends. Those women all lived in totally different worlds than I do. Those relationships were doomed from the start.” Harm leaned forward to kiss her, hoping his words were reassuring her. “If you ask me, I think you and I have *excellent* odds.”
[Much better than the four percent I was hoping for two days ago!] Mac smiled. “Yeah. I think we do. Now help me up out of this bed!”
“Yes, ma’am,” Harm joked as he pulled her up. “Let’s get dressed, marine.”

JAG Headquarters
Falls Church, VA
Mac had managed to get dressed by herself, determined not to ask Harm for any more help than he had already given her. But by the time they got to JAG, Mac’s legs were starting to weaken. On the elevator, Harm noticed Mac leaning heavily on the rails.
“You going to be able to make it to your desk?”
“Yeah, I think so. It’s not much further. I’ve made it this far.” She smiled defiantly.
But when she stepped out of the elevator, her legs wobbled and Harm instantly put his arm around her to steady her.
“Thanks. I guess I need to be careful about doing too much, too soon,” Mac humbly admitted.
“You said it, not me.” Harm flashed her that flyboy grin that made her weak knees even weaker.
As they walked into the bullpen, Bud spotted them first.
“Colonel! Commander!”
Harriet, standing next to Bud, simply smiled. Sturgis, who had been casually walking by at the time, stopped to stand with them.
As Harm and Mac, with his arm still around her for support, reached the area where their friends were, Bud was the first to speak.
“How are you feeling?”
“You seem like you’re better,” Harriet added.
“I do feel much better. And I have the Commander here to support me when I overdo it.” Mac looked up at Harm with a look that didn’t escape Harriet’s notice.
“Like now, when she should be at home. She is going straight to her desk where she can take it easy,” Harm responded, returning the same look back at her. Both were smiling and seemed as if they were momentarily oblivious to those around them, including Coates who had just joined them.
“Uh, not until after she goes to the General’s office. He requested to see both of you when you got here.”
“Well, tell him that we are coming.”
As they made their way to the General’s office, Harriet observed. “Something’s definitely different.”
“What’s different?” Bud asked.
“Them.”
“I don’t know what you are talking about. *They* are different?” Bud was truly dumbfounded.
In frustration, Harriet turned to Sturgis, who merely smiled. He saw it and knew that Mac had finally shared her secret to the one it mattered most to.
“Harriet?” Bud asked again. “Just *how* are they different?” He was getting frustrated now.
“Well, let’s just say that it looks like they both got what they wanted most for Christmas.”
“And what’s that?”
Harriet grinned. “Each other.”
