Title: Understanding the Gulf
Author: Hollyjp
Author’s Notes: This started out as a look at the dynamics that were addresses between Harm and Sturgis during the episode Bridging the Gulf. From there it took off on its own. I guess it could be considered alternate universe but I’m attempting to fill in the gaps in the remaining season ten episodes as we saw them. Why would I do this? Well things took on new meaning when I watched the episodes again with each one a little less painful at times. I also plan to continue Harm and Mac’s story a little longer then Fair Winds and Following Seas, although I have no intention of doing another “Life in London.” Been there - done that. I hope you enjoy this trip through time and a glimpse of their future together.
Spoilers: Everything up to and including the season 10 episode Bridging the Gulf. References to some of the good stuff in the season 10 episodes that followed.

Understanding the Gulf
PART 1
It had been a rough week yet it seemed that something good may have come from it. Right now other then qualifying to fly F-18's he wasn’t entirely sure what it was. He had tried to reach Mac during his layover before catching transport back to Andrews Air Force Base but had ended up settling for a voice mail message. He had no idea if she had gotten the message or not.
Creswell had the helicopter pick him up in Falls Church when he departed so his car was still at Headquarters. He was hoping that Mac would be able to get away and drop his car off for him or it would be an additional expense to get home. He smiled to himself as the wheels hit the tarmac and admitted that he really just wanted to see Mac and hoped she would be here to welcome him home.
At the terminal where families were able to say their good-byes to their loved ones when they departed and hoped to be when they returned, stood a woman with shoulder length dark hair dressed in jeans, sweater and leather jacket nervously waiting and hoping that plans hadn’t changed. When she had first heard the message from Harm, she had been angry that he had presumed on their friendship.
By the time she had gotten home, she had cooled off and put things in perspective. Mac had listened to his message right after Vukovic had made his parting shot and left her office. That’s what had her upset she realized later, not Harm’s call. She had dialed in and played the voice mail message again and realized she still had time to make it to Andrews to meet Harm, just not time to go back to Headquarters to get his car for him.
Mac had quickly changed out of her uniform and into jeans before she returned to her car and headed for Andrews. Now she watched as one of the transport planes touched down. She hoped Harm was on this one. He had not been on the last two.
Harm stepped off the plane and tossed his sea bag higher onto his shoulder along with his other shoulder bag. He was looking toward the parking lot trying to see if he could spot his car, but it was just dark enough that he couldn’t be sure. He followed the other guys into the terminal area and watched their reunions with their families that had been able to get away to greet them. He felt a pang of envy for just a split second until he spotted her.
He tried to play it cool, but he couldn’t contain the smile when she smiled his way.
“Hey Mac. This is a nice surprise. I didn’t put you out too much did I?” Harm asked as he reached her and let his bags slide to the floor for a minute. Part of him wanted to hold her and part of him wanted to hurry her away so they could talk. God did he need to talk to her about the things that happened on this trip.
“Not much...actually I was in a snit when I got your message and I had to play it again after I got home...so I didn’t bring your car, I’m sorry.” Mac apologized as he stood there smiling on her.
“Its okay...I assume you’re willing to give me a ride home?”
“Of course...actually, I wondered if you have any plans for dinner.”
“Not really...I was thinking a shower would feel pretty good about now, but if you can stand it, I guess I can.”
“I can stand it, but I know how good it feels to get home and shower and put on real clothes after being at sea. How ‘bout I take you home and while you shower and change I’ll order out for us?”
“Sure.”
“There’s some things that happened while you were gone I’d like to talk to you about if you don’t mind.”
“Not at all. Shall we go?” At her nod, Harm hoisted his bags again and walked with Mac to her corvette. Stowing his gear he slid into the passenger side and leaned back to watch her drive.
She was so beautiful but that was also obvious and what anyone looking at her could see. Mac was more then that. She was intelligent, warm, sensitive, loyal, and fun to be around. He loved to push himself to keep up with her and loved it when he bested her. He also was full of pride when she bested him because he knew she was the best. He sighed.
“Tired?” Mac asked from the driver’s seat.
“Not really. Just thinking I guess.”
“Cause if you are I can wait to talk to you,” Mac started backing out of their plans.
“Mac, stop. I’m not tired. I want to hear what you have to say and there are some things I need to run by you too.”
“Okay...want to start talking now?”
“It can wait.”
“You sure...I mean you were obviously deep in thought judging by the sigh.”
“First, did you see Sturgis when he got back?”
“Not to talk to really. You two still going at it?”
“You could say that.”
“Harm, I thought you two were such close friends at Annapolis. What happened?”
Leave it to Mac to hit the nail on the head right away Harm thought. He had tried to tell her once before that they had grown apart, but she had taken it to mean that he thought they had grown apart. Harm knew that was only part of the story.
“Mac, ever hear the expression, familiarity breeds contempt?” Harm asked.
“Yes.”
“I think that in away, that’s what happened to Sturgis and me. Neither one of us was willing to admit it or even acknowledge it at first, but things have happened since he joined us here at JAG that have taken the remnants of our friendship and destroyed what little of it was really there.”
“This sounds like it could be a heavy conversation. Things blow up on the Kennedy when Sturgis got there?”
“You could say that. I mean we kept it civil at first. I said I was glad to see him and he said he was glad to be there. I knew from his tone that he was lying and told him so.”
“Harm, you didn’t!”
“I wasn’t rude, just matter of fact. We both knew he was sent there and had a job to do. I respect that. I also knew that as much as I hoped you would be there, that it wouldn’t be right...we’ve known each other too long and worked too closely together. They even questioned Sturgis at first, asking him if he could be impartial enough to do the job. We both knew he wouldn’t cut me any slack, and I hoped he would be fair.”
“He wasn’t though was he?”
“No...he weighed all the facts and recommended an Article 32 for negligent homicide even though the facts didn’t add up to that conclusion. I had more support from the Captain of the Iraqi’s that was on board, then I did Sturgis.”
“How did you handle it when you got his report, Harm?” Mac asked as she pulled into the alley by Harm’s apartment.
“I’ll tell you that later. Come on....there’s a shower waiting for me.”
Harm collected his things and Mac grabbed her handbag she had tossed in the back seat when she left her apartment. Together they made their way to the loft, Mac taking his key to unlock the door so he didn’t have to put things down an extra time.
“Pizza okay?” she asked as he made his way to his bedroom to drop his things.
“Sure, as long as they send a salad with it.”
“Got it.”
Harm grabbed clean underwear and jeans before stripping off his uniform and dropping it on his bed. In his boxers and t-shirt he grabbed his clothes before stripping the rest off while his shower warmed up. He brushed his teeth, shaved and showered in minutes. Drying off quickly, he pulled on the clean boxer briefs and jeans before heading to his bedroom. Mac was sitting on his bed, removing the fruit salad from his uniform.
“Sorry...hope you don’t mind my coming up here. I figured you might have left your shirt on your bed and thought you wouldn’t mind...”
“Thanks...that was nice of you.” Harm smiled as he stepped past her and grabbed a shirt from his closet and slipped it on, only buttoning the three buttons in the middle. Mac swallowed as she watched him. Hearing the elevator she headed to see if it was the pizza delivery.
Harm watched her. Mac was nervous about something...but then again she was more open then she had been in a long while with him. He found his hopes rising again.
He headed for the kitchen pleased to see the bottled water and soft drinks in the refrigerator waiting, all chilled. “Soda or water Mac?”
“Diet Coke?”
“Got it.” He grabbed two plus two glasses, two plates, two napkins, two knives and two forks. He set them on the dining room table just as the pizza and salad arrived.
While they are, Harm decided to try and get Mac to open up about what was bothering her.
“So how was your week?”
“Interesting...another of Creswell’s new folks arrived. Lt. Gregory Vukovic.”
“He give you a bad time?”
“He was a challenge...but I think I can handle him.”
“Mac, what aren’t you telling me?”
“Harm, you’ve done some crazy things when you’ve defended your clients. How did you know if you were crossing the line?”
“I never was sure, but I decided how far to push based on how deeply I believed in what I was doing and why. Are you questioning the new guy or yourself?”
“Maybe both.”
“Mac, you know the law. You are a great lawyer and you did a great job as a judge. Why are you second guessing yourself?” Harm covered her hand on the table between them silently demanding with his eyes that she look at him.
She did. She also visibly relaxed. “The new guy did something that I challenged him on. I’m not sure how far he would have gone but as it was, perhaps what he did was the right thing to do. Still, I told him that what he did was unethical and that if he did it again I’d report him.”
“Sounds like the right decision.”
“Yeah, but then he turned around and said I would never report him because I liked what he did. I told him not to bet his career on it, but Harm...he was right.” Mac pulled her hand from Harm’s and used it to take a bite of her pizza.
“About you not reporting him?”
“No...about me liking what he did. It made the difference between winning or losing my case, but what bothers me is I’m not sure why I liked what he did.”
“I’m not following you Mac.”
“Did I like it because it was innovative or because it helped my record...or because it reminded me of you when we first met?”
Harm smiled. This was the closest Mac had come in a long time to admitting that she liked him. It pleased him.
“Does it matter?”
“Yes...but I’m not sure I can explain why.” Mac admitted.
“You don’t have to. But if you have doubts feel free to run things by me anytime. We can figure it out together, okay?” Harm asked, once again capturing her hand in his.
“Yeah...we still make a hell of a team.”
“That we do.”
They finished their dinner and then moved to the living room for coffee and to finish filling Mac in on Harm’s experience with Sturgis.
Mac picked up Harm’s hands and looked at his knuckles. Harm watched her unsure what she was doing. “Looks like you didn’t anything or else you healed fast.”
Harm chuckled then. He captured one of Mac’s hands in his as they sat there talking. It felt right to him and she didn’t seem to mind.
“I walked in to the war room and threw his report at him. I told him it was thorough and unbiased right up to this conclusion. Then I accused him of seeing an opportunity to take me down and jumping on it.”
“Oh Harm.”
“We got in each other’s faces and I’ll admit I wanted to deck him but I knew I was right and that there had to be a way to clear myself, as long as I didn’t end up in the brig...I didn’t have you there to watch my six, so I had to keep a level head.” Harm smiled at Mac and he fell a little more in love with her when he saw the tender caring look she gave him.
“I told Sturgis that he’d had a problem with me ever since he came to JAG and we might as well bring it out in the open. He told me I was arrogant, condescending and jealous because he was tapped for the interim JAG over me.”
“Well...”
“I told him he was right Mac, but I told him that I lived with it. He told me I never supported him and I reminded him that we would have all been there for him and most of us gave him the benefit of the doubt until he sabotaged himself being a tight ass sanctimonious prig!”
“Harm you didn’t!”
“I did. I’ve seethed ever since I found out he said that to you and I finally had a chance to throw it back at him.”
“Obviously you found a way to clear yourself.”
“Yeah, the Iraqi Captain on board the ship helped me talk to the fisherman and got him to admit that he had been set up and that the plane was in fact going down. We were able to get him out and his family will eventually be able to join him. The prime minister and his pilot that I had been accused of murdering were found. The terrorists had slit their throats and they were dead. They never were on the plane.”
“So once again you were a hero.”
“Mac...”
“I know...you were just doing your job. Still not everyone goes to the same lengths as you do. I’m proud of you.”
“Thanks Mac.” Harm watched as Mac lifted his hand in hers and held it to her face for a few seconds.
“What did Sturgis say after you cleared your name?”
“He told me he was glad it turned out well for me and I told him I believed him. He said he guessed we were still swapping lies and I said I guessed he was right.”
“Harm its said to see what was once a good friendship fall apart this way.”
“Mac, it was never that good of a friendship...not a real friendship. We’ve always been rivals. The bigger the stakes got the nastier things got between us. I’m not proud of my part in it all...and Sturgis was right when he said I was arrogant and jealous. I don’t think I was condescending...sarcastic, yeah...and I’m not proud of that either.”
“You’ve always admitted when you were wrong Harm...and some of that arrogance is self-confidence, as you’ve pointed out to me on several occasions.”
“What’s this? Are you coming to my defense?” Harm tried to tease Mac to lighten the mood.
“What if I am?”
“I’m not sure I deserve it.”
“Let me be the judge of that, okay?” Mac smiled as she leaned against his arm.
Harm lifted his arm up and settled her against his side instead.
“I still feel like this thing with you and Sturgis happened overnight.”
“It didn’t Mac...think back to when he first came here. Remember how he wasn’t going to run in the Jagathon even though he knew he could beat us all hands down?”
“Yeah...”
“Remember how he butted in with Bud and I was so worried he would realize that we had something special between us that I made things worse?”
“Yeah...he and I got into in the bull pen and I pointed out that he wasn’t any better then what he accused us of.”
“Good girl...of course he’s probably held that over you ever since.”
“Yeah...a long with something else I let slip to him one time...of course I told him he’d pay if he let that slip...and I don’t think he’s ever broken his word on that.”
“You going to share that secret with me?” Harm asked Mac as he looked down at her upturned face and realized how much he wanted to kiss her.
“Not yet...but I might someday.”
“Okay...anyway, Bud told me that Sturgis was pretty angry when I left the Navy and that he took it out on both of you.”
“He even admitted once that he never realized how much heat you took for all of us until you weren’t there. I thought Sturgis stayed in touch with you, though.”
“He stopped by a few times to see me, but it was mostly to whine about how much work he had with me being gone. When he knew for sure that I wasn’t taking kindly to his attitude about the situation, he stopped coming around.”
“You too have a love hate relationship, don’t you?”
“No....we have a tolerance to intolerance relationship. And as I said, the higher the stakes, at least in his eyes, the worse it becomes between us.”
“But you guys use to hang out and work on your Corvette together,” Mac reminded him still trying to understand the rift between these two intelligent men.
“Even when we worked on my car, he would rub my face in something he could do that I couldn’t. His pleasure was and always been at being better then someone. I know he and his father use to really get into it over Sturgis’ attitude at times.”
“But Harm, he gave you the top for your Corvette.”
“Yes, and then sent me the bill. Bet you didn’t know that part.”
“Harm, did he know how frantic you were going to get over having the car disappear again?”
“I’m sure of it.”
“Things are starting to make more sense to me now...about that anyway.” Mac yawned.
“Wow!, Mac I’m sorry, I didn’t realize it had gotten this late. You want to stay over?”
“You wouldn’t mind?”
“Promise not to rattle around and clean my gun tonight?” Harm teased.
“I promise.”
“Why don’t you go get ready for bed, and climb right in. The sheets are clean. I’ll grab another blanket and sleep on the top.”
“Harm its your bed, you should be able to sleep in your own sheets. I’ll take the blanket and sleep on top.”
“Have it your way. I’m tired enough tonight that you could crawl in with me and I wouldn’t know the difference.” Harm admitted when he yawned as she had done.
Mac thought about Harm’s words as she got ready for bed, stripping down to her underpants and one of Harm’s t-shirts. By the time she came out of the bathroom, Harm was already under the covers with his back to her. She hesitated for only a second before she crawled in beside Harm and turned her back to him.
Mac knew that they might both have other ideas when they awoke the next morning but like Harm she was tired enough to go right to sleep tonight. Hearing his deep even breathing she knew he was already asleep, so she turned and let herself creep closer to his warmth. He had turned on his back and she watched him sleep in the dim light until sleep claimed her too.
PART 2
Harm slowly woke up first becoming conscious of a weight on his arm and chest. He tried to move his fingers but nothing happened. Alarmed at the pressure he was feeling on one side of his body, his eyes flew open. Gingerly he looked toward his right side. The stumble on his chin caught in the dark brown hair covering the top of a head belonging to non-other then his partner. Smiling he called her name softly. She stirred but continued sleeping so he tried again.
“Mac...its time to wake up. I need you to move off my arm.” He waited but nothing. Great, now what do I do he thought. Carefully he extracted himself out from under her, shut off the alarm glad he had thought to set it the night before and headed for the bathroom. He showered, shaved and took care of his other bathroom routines before returning to the bedroom with a towel wrapped around his waist. He had decided during his shower that it was probably best that they didn’t wake up together in bed. With her sleeping and nature calling he had been able to walk away from her this morning. If she had been awake, and not ready to wring his neck, he might have been tempted to move them forward once again.
He finished dressing in his uniform so he could report in to Headquarters this morning before the staff meeting. It would be the first time he would face Creswell after nearly getting run out of the Navy. He was determined to keep an open mind and see how his commanding officer dealt with him. Glancing at the clock he knew he needed to wake Mac up.
“Mac...do you have a uniform in your car? Mac?”
“I’m awake. Whoa, you’re already dressed for JAG. What time is it?” Mac asked sitting up and looking around a little dazed.
“It’s zero six thirty. Do you have a uniform with you?” Harm asked again choosing not to tease her about her lack of time awareness for the moment.
“No...I’m sorry...do you mind if I swing by the apartment before I take you to JAG?”
“Of course not. Would you like breakfast?”
“Not yet...thanks...I’ll be right with you.” Mac slid out of bed and dashed into the bathroom.
“Shower if you want Mac, then you’ll only have to change your clothes at your place.”
“Okay...Harm, why don’t you drive my car and then while I run in and change you can run down to the corner and grab us coffee and muffins or something for breakfast?”
“Sure.” Harm headed for the kitchen to put together some lunch for them from the left over salad and pizza from the previous night.
Twenty minutes later they were in the car and headed toward Georgetown. They made good time as it was still early. Another half hour and the city streets would be full. As Mac hopped out in front of her apartment she left her breakfast order.
“I want a cinnamon hazelnut cappuccino and a raspberry walnut muffin. See you soon!” she called as she shut the door and dashed upstairs.
Harm shook his head and eased down the street to the coffee shop Mac loved. He ordered himself a plain black coffee and Mac’s calorie loaded cup and then turned to order the muffins. They were out of her requested kind but he spotted the cinnamon chip muffins that he knew she also enjoyed. He even indulged and order one for himself.
Circling around the block he pulled up as Mac came out of her door and down the steps.
“Was that good timing or were watching for me?” Harm asked as she slid in.
“Good timing, of course.”
“You timing was a little off when you woke up this morning though wasn’t it?”
“I knew...”
“Don’t even try it Mac,” Harm laughed. “I called you several times before you actually stirred...I even had to crawl out from under you so I know you were sleeping soundly...and I’m not surprised if you lost track of time.”
“Well, maybe for a few seconds,” Mac admitted as she sipped her cappuccino. “Perfect.”
“I couldn’t get your Raspberry walnut muffin. I hope the cinnamon chip I got instead is okay.”
“Good choice. Thanks again. You know Harm, I’ve been thinking. Creswell needs to hear from you exactly what went down with Sturgis on the Kennedy. I don’t think he’s got a clear picture of what’s going on.”
“Mac, when the time is right, Creswell will know it all. Until then, I plan to take the high road and not let Sturgis suck me under.”
“Admiral Chegwidden would be proud of you,” Mac told him as they stepped off the elevator and headed for their offices.
“See you at staff meeting I guess,” Harm told her as he dropped his things in his office, grabbed his file, and went to meet with the General. “Good morning Coates. The General ready to see me?”
“Morning Commander Rabb. He said for you to knock when you arrived.”
Harm nodded his appreciation to Coates and wrapped his fist on the door. “Commander Rabb reporting as ordered sir.”
“At ease Commander. Have a seat and tell me what you didn’t put in your report.”
“Sir?”
“Commander, I’ve been around enough to know that you and Commander Turner have a history and although it may seem friendly on the surface I suspect its anything but. Now, there were things I’d like to know that didn’t show up in either of your written reports.”
“Aye, aye sir. Commander Turner and I got some things on the table.”
“Details Commander...did you punch him?”
“No sir.”
“Did he punch you?”
“No sir.”
“Didn’t think so...but my guess is you wanted to clean his clock.”
“I did sir, but my career isn’t worth it even though I’ve got a lot of dings in my file.”
“Do you see yourself making Captain eventually?”
“I use to sir, but I know it would be highly unlikely due to the six months blank in my file and some of the things I’ve done.”
“You do know that you would probably need to take an overseas command to obtain captain’s rank?”
“Yes sir. Sir, do you think that committee would even consider me?” Harm asked, surprised at where Creswell was taking the conversation.
“Commander, if you had asked me if I thought I would be in this seat a year ago, I would have given you a flat no. However, politicians like people that can rise to the occasion and stand their ground. For a Squid, you’re a stand up guy. You’re respected by both Marines and Navy. You push the limits and you’ve got good instincts. So yes, Commander, I do think you have a chance.”
“Thank you sir.”
“Commander, did your mother ever tell you that she hoped someday you’d have a child that put you through what you put her through?”
“Yes General I think she has made a statement sort of like that.” Harm grinned enjoying this side of his CO.
“Well, on behalf of Admiral Chegwidden and myself, I hope when you do take a command billet you are blessed with men and women such as yourself. That would be the best revenge the Marine Corps and Navy could get on you.”
“Yes sir.” Harm had to even cringe at that thought. “About this thing between Commander Turner and myself, sir, let me reassure you that you won’t have a problem from me.”
“Understood Commander. See you at Staff meeting. Dismissed.”
“Aye, aye sir.” Harm came to attention and then executed a snap turn and walked out of the General’s office.
Ten minutes later
Conference Room
Harm held the door open so that Lt. Commander Roberts, Lt. Colonel Mackenzie, and Lt. Vukovic could enter before him. Commander Sturgis Turner was already there and seated to the left of where the General would be if he sat down. Sometimes the man chose to pace or lean on the back of his chair.
Harm and Sturgis simply stated each others first name to acknowledge the other. Mac was more warmly greeted by Sturgis.
“So Mac, did you keep the young ones in line while we were gone?”
“I did my best Commander Turner. I’m sure you would have done better.”
Harm looked at Mac a little surprised to hear her pushing Turner’s buttons.
“They at least showed some respect for my authority while I served as JAG. Of course neither of you handled me being picked by Admiral Chegwidden over you ver well.”
“Not true, Sturgis,” Harm jumped in. “Although you handled things by the book, you lacked the confidence and...guts...to ever have a shot at the job for long. If Admiral Chegwidden had any idea it was going to take them as long to tap the new JAG, he would have made a different choice, and I don’t mean Mac or myself, either.”
“That’s right Sturgis. You were the next highest ranking officer on staff after us. I was dealing with medical issues, and Harm was dealing with other personal issues at the time. Neither of us would have been able to handle the job when we needed to step up and take it. Both of us however had filled in off and on over the years,” Mac added.
General Creswell’s arrival brought them all to their feet and ended the debate which Lt. Commander Roberts and the new junior officers had been following assiduously.
It soon became evident that General Creswell had heard more of the discussion that they realized.
“I realized that this office was over burdened shortly after my arrival. As you know I have added some additional junior staff members which I feel have a fire in their bellies and will be ready to move forward under the able guidance of our senior staff. Many of you have been here an inordinate amount of time and as I have mentioned to some of you, promotion boards are coming up soon and with it, will come new billets. Unlike Admiral Chegwidden, I feel that we need to move our strongest leaders onto new billets so they may further develop our field staff. That is why I have testing many of you. I don’t believe in everything I read in your files and I don’t believe everything you tell me. I like to set up situations that test your mettle.”
Creswell paused as he looked over the team of lawyers he now had working under his command. Seeing that a few were chomping at the bit to ask questions, he held up his hand signaling them to wait to he was finished.
“In a command position, you must not assume the worst about your staff and you need to keep an open mind. Take me for example. Commander Roberts was involved in two incidents in a short period of time after I arrived here that led me to believe he had an anger management problem. Had I not kept an open mind, then I would have missed out on all the talent the man has and probably not considered him my first choice to take over as Chief of Staff. Admiral Chegwidden saw the things in this man which I took at face value until I had seen it for myself. He was the first one that reminded me why I needed to keep an open mind.”
Harm and Mac looked at Bud and gave him the silent thumbs up with their smiles proud to know that their commanding officer saw in him what they had seen for years.
“Now Colonel Mackenzie, this doesn’t mean I don’t think you’re doing an excellent job. As I’ve told you, I think you’ve done well to maintain your Marine outlook, while being surrounded by a bunch of squids.” Creswell smiled and they chuckled at his response.
“Colonel, I do want you to begin training Commander Roberts to step into your shoes. You have been here at JAG a long time and you are in line for your own command. When that time arrives I want a smooth transition.”
“Aye, aye sir.”
“Commander Rabb, as I told you earlier, your file read like a cross between fiction and fantasy. If I had listened to some of your colleagues and taken your file at face value...well lets say your future would not have looked to encouraging. However, I soon recognized the fire in your belly as well. Great leaders have to take risks, and you have done that more then most. Going out on a limb is apt to land you in rough waters at times. When it happens, how you handle it is what makes the difference between a leader and his team. You have done that while keeping your eye on what is fair and just as you’ve gone after the truth.”
“Thank you sir.”
“Now, when I came in there was a rather lively debate going on between Commanders Rabb and Turner and Colonel Mackenzie. Here is a lesson for all of you,” Creswell paused as he looked around the table. “Commander Rabb recently faced an investigation as a result of a decision he made. His expectation was that he would be served in the same light as those who he has served. It didn’t happen quite that way but fortunately his focus on finding the truth led him to be able to prove that he had made the right decision. I would expect each of you to go to the same lengths you would want someone to go for you, if it was you in the hot seat. That’s what separates a truly good litigator from the rest. Some of you had questions.”
“Sir,” spoke up Commander Roberts, “Are we to expect that both Commander Rabb and Colonel Mackenzie will be leaving JAG soon?”
“I would expect that to happen sooner then later, although there is nothing specific at this time.”
“Yes sir. It will seem strange around here without them.”
“I’m sure it will, but as I said, they’ve paid their dues here at Headquarters and both deserve their own commands.”
“Am I to take it that you are not recommending me for the Captain’s boards, sir?” asked Commander Turner.
“Not at this time.”
“Yes sir.”
“Does that mean that we can expect to be here at JAG for awhile, General?” asked Lt. Vukovic.
“Not necessarily, although as I said I believe you’ve shown a fire in your belly and I’m willing to try to provide you with role models and guidance to guide you. I see a lot of the fire in you that others saw in Rabb. I’m hoping that with the right kind of guidance you will develop the potential the way I feel Commander Rabb has. How you balance ethics and guts will be the deciding factor.”
“I see.”
“I hope you do,” muttered Mac.
“Colonel?”
“Yes sir. I was saying that I also hope that the Lieutenant shows those same characteristics.”
“Very good. Well...now that we’ve taken care of this, I’ll hear your status reports.”
That Evening
JAG Parking Lot
“Harm, are you doing anything this evening?” Mac asked as they stepped out of the building.
“Nothing special.”
“Have dinner with me at my place this evening?”
“Sure. I need to go home first. What time you want me there?”
“Two hours enough time?”
“Plenty.”
“See you then.”
Harm watched from his rearview mirror as Mac pulled out of her spot and headed home. He had a feeling that Mac wanted to process with him all that the General had told them today even thought they still didn’t know specifics. He knew he needed to talk to her too. Although he was encouraged by the fact that she had come to pick him up at the air field, and that she had stayed the night in his bed, he wasn’t convinced she was really ready to hear what he had to say to her.
“Take it slow and easy Rabb. Take little steps and let her get use to the idea that you’re moving closer to her. No surprises,” he cautioned himself.
Harm went home and changed. He called Mattie to check in with her.
“Hi Harm. When did you get back?”
“Last night actually.”
“Must have been late.”
“Why’s that?”
“Usually you call me as soon as your back.”
“Well, I wasn’t that late, but Mac picked me up at the air field and we spent the evening talking.”
“Just talking?”
“Mattie...” Harm warned with a smile in his voice. He had to admit he kind of liked it when Mattie teased him about Mac. “Yes. Actually she’s invited me to her place for dinner tonight.”
“I see.” Harm could hear the laughter in Mattie’s voice.
“So how are the flying lessons going?”
“Good so far. I learn more from you though.”
“Maybe I can get out there this weekend and take you up if the weather holds,” Harm offered.
“Will you bring Mac too?”
“Do you want me to?”
“Yes. We thought we should get to know each other better.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. We’ve got you in common for starters.”
“I’ll ask her tonight.”
“Are you going to ask her on a real date anytime soon?”
“Depends on whether or not she’s ready to start dating again. She’s had a rough year, Mattie.”
“I know. You have too though.”
“Nah, I had you.”
“Still do in a way.”
“Good.”
“Hey, I’m going to let you go. Dad and Kevin just drove in with dinner.”
“Let me guess...pizza?”
“No...Chinese tonight.”
“Well I’m glad you’ve broadened your tastes.”
“Goodnight Harm...give Mac a hug for me.”
Harm listened to the dial tone in his ear. Mattie made him happy. He enjoyed her company. He felt like he was worth something again after she came into his life during that dark time. He shook off the somber mood and got his things together to go to Mac’s. He was glad it was Friday night and neither of them were on duty tomorrow.
PART 3
Mac’s Apartment
Georgetown
“Come on in,” Mac greeted him when she opened the door to his knock.
Harm smiled and stepped inside her cozy apartment. On a whim he leaned down and buzzed her cheek with his lips. “Oh yeah, Mattie said to give you a hug for her,” Harm informed Mac as he slipped off his jacket and dropped it on the back of the chair. He turned to see Mac opening her arms to him. He swallowed then smiled as he stepped close to her and caught her up in a hug holding her tight for a few seconds before releasing her and stepping back.
“How is she?”
“Good. I’m going out to see her Sunday if the weather holds. Want to come along?”
“You don’t mind?”
“Not at all. We’d both like you to spend more time with us.”
“Then I’d love to go. What time do you want to leave on Sunday?” Mac asked.
“Early. If I’m going to take ‘Sarah’ out I want to be in the air by eleven. Want to back out?”
“No way. Harm...what did you think about the things Creswell said today?”
“I think he’s right in a lot of ways. We both knew this day could come. I wasn’t sure if I had a chance for Captain anymore, until I talked to him this morning.”
“That’s been a dream for a long time hasn’t it?”
“Yes. But I’m not sure it’s the most important thing in my life anymore.”
“I know.”
“Mac, I’m not pushing you or anything...but I’d like to start taking some small steps and see where we are.”
“I know...I can’t explain why I’m hesitating.”
“I think I can. Shall I give it a try?”
“Yes.”
“We’ve gotten close a few times before, but every time something or someone has needed my attention and I’ve put personal needs and desires on the back burner to tend to what ever it was. I did that for years and it became a bad habit. Chegwidden made me realize that Mac.”
“And now?”
“I know there are times I need to reach out to other people - for them as well as me. Besides that, I know what I want out of life...but I’m afraid if I go too slow or too fast I’ll ruin everything. Do you understand what I’m saying to you?”
“I think so.”
“I hope so Mac...I want to give you the space you need and let you come to me when you are ready, but I think its time that I started to open up to you and not protect myself as much where you’re concerned.”
“Why do you feel you have to protect yourself from me...and no jokes this time Harm.”
“Because it matters so much to me that we want the same things.”
“And if we do?” Mac asked breathlessly.
“Then it really will be time to let go,” Harm stated simply.
Mac nodded and indicated that Harm should have a seat at the table. They enjoyed a comfortable meal chatting easily, not letting things get complicated or heavy. Harm had been hoping that things would move forward tonight but he knew as Mac talked that she still wasn’t ready to take that step. After they cleaned up after their meal, Harm reached for his coat.
“You’re leaving?” Mac asked.
“It’s getting late.”
“Okay, its just...”
“Just what Mac. Talk to me.” Harm watched the expression dance across her beautiful face and he knew she was weighing her options.
“Its nothing. I’ll see you in the morning?” Mac checked.
“Zero seven hundred.” Harm brushed Mac’s cheek with his lips before he left her apartment and whistled as he strolled down the hall.

Mac was waiting for Harm when he pulled up in his Lexus the next morning. “Sorry I’m late.”
“It’s okay. It’s nice out this morning. Almost feels like winter is over.”
“Not according to the forecast for tonight. Suppose to snow again.”
“I know...just let me pretend a little while, okay?”
“Fair enough. Want coffee?”
“No thanks...maybe later.”
Mac and Harm listened to music and chatted on the drive to Blacksburg, Virginia keeping things light-hearted and fun. They both needed a relaxed stressful day. Mattie was waiting for them when they arrived at the house she shared with her father. It still needed some repairs, but they were putting all their extra effort into Grace Aviation trying to keep it going. Mattie ran down the steps to meet them, and was hugging Harm before he even got out of the Lexus.
“Hello to you too, Mathilda Grace,” Harm chuckled at the enthusiastic welcome.
“Hi. Hi Mac.”
“Hello Mattie. I hope you don’t mind me tagging along.”
“No way! This is great. You may want to use the restroom here before we go out to the hangar. Dad’s working on the plumbing out today. A friend of his came over to help.”
“Good idea,” Harm agreed as he followed Mattie and Mac into the house. “I take it the business is picking up.”
“Dad said he’s out straight everyday while I’m at school. By the time I get there after school and check out the books, put in the orders, and confirm the schedules I don’t have time to help him. After we get home and eat, I have to hit the books.”
“Doesn’t sound like you have much time for Kevin these days,” Harm teased.
“Don’t rub it in,” she shot Harm a glaring look, before her grin broke through. “We do still find the time to see each other. Speaking of which...” Mattie gave them a pointed look glancing back and forth between the Harm and Mac. “This is a good sign, right?”
“It’s a great sign that we’ll have a chance to get to know each other better,” Mac added easily side-stepping the teenagers hints. She had practice with Chloe who made Mattie seem like an innocent amateur by comparison.
“Shall we head to the hangar,” Harm asked after they had all used the head.
“Let’s go!” Mattie called slipping into the backseat and leaning forward resting her elbows on the seat between Harm and Mac as they sat up front. “I took my written test and passed it.”
“Your flying test?” Mac asked.
“Yes. Now I’ve passed the written test, I’m going to be able to do more when I take lessons, like take-offs and landings. Right Harm?”
“That’s right. And you better let me know so we can be here when you’re ready to solo. Right Mac?”
“That’s right. I wouldn’t want to miss it either.”

Mac followed Mattie and Harm around the Stearman as they performed their pre-flight check. She couldn’t resist teasing Harm a little.
“Mattie, did you check the fuel pump line? Harm sometimes forgets that one.”
“Once...and you’re not going to let me live it down are you?” Harm grinned shaking his finger at Mac.
“Probably not, Crash.”
“Crash! That’s not even fair.”
“Think about it Harm...I went flying with you the first time and you had to set that thing down in a postage stamp sized field; then I’m with you in Russia and we had to eject; and then I climb into a plane with you in Paraguay and what happens - we crash. Are you sure you want to go up with Mattie?” Mac asked while Harm shook his head and moved to the other side of the airplane.
“Mattie, why don’t you put together a flight plan and file it while I finish up here?”
“Okay Harm.”
Mac watched Mattie dance away before she rounded the plane and approached Harm. “You do know I’m just teasing don’t you?”
“Yup...but I had you worried, didn’t I?”
“Harmon Rabb Junior...You did that on purpose.”
“What?”
“Got all moody and quiet on me when I teased you.”
“Yeah...but I’ll make it up to you.”
“How will you do that?” Mac asked.
“I think of something good, I promise.”
“And you always keep your promises don’t you?” Mac whispered amazed at the effect this man had on her.
“I certainly try.”
“I know.”
Mac waited in the Lexus and read her book while they played in the sky for about an hour. When they landed, Mattie hopped out and came running toward her. Mac got out of the car and went to meet her.
“Everything okay?”
“Great! Harm wants to know if you’d like to go up for a little while.”
“I don’t know,” Mac hesitated.
“Mac, it would mean a lot to Harm if you’d give him another chance.”
“Did he say that?”
“No...but I know Harm.”
“You’re right...I’ll go.”
Mattie helped Mac get the headgear on and handed her the gloves she had worn.
“It’s a bit colder up there. You’ll want these. I’m going to get some cocoa ready for when you get back.”
“Okay.”
“Have fun.”
“I will.”
Mac made her way to where Harm waited and got herself into the front seat and strapped in.
“New headset?”
“Yeah. I got it to make it easier to coach Mattie when she flies with me.”
“Another sign that you’re a good Dad.”
Harm took Mac up and they stayed near the airfield and played. It was pretty cold, but Harm loved hearing Mac’s laughter. He had been looking for a way to make her laugh again for so long.
When they landed they were both chilled but enjoying each others company. Mac helped Harm tie down the Stearman before they went into to get the cocoa Mattie had promised them.
“Are you warm enough Mac?”
“I’m okay.” Harm reached for Mac’s hand.
“You’re freezing. I’m sorry Mac, I guess I shouldn’t have kept you up as long.”
“We weren’t up long.”
Harm smiled. “How long were we up, Miss Swiss Watch?”
“Twenty-six minutes and thirteen seconds,” Mac confidently answered as they entered the hangar.
“No way Mac...try fifty-six minutes.”
“I’d about giving up on you two,” Mattie smiled as she joined them handing them each a mug of hot chocolate.
“Harm’s trying to convince me he had me up there almost an hour,” Mac explained to Mattie.
“You were.”
“No.”
“Her clock stopped Mattie and she’s having trouble believing it,” Harm teased.
They finally convinced her that they were putting one over on her just as Tom Johnson joined them.
“Looks like you two will have a rough trip back to DC.”
“Why’s that Tom?” Harm asked.
“I just got a report that its snowing in the city already.”
“Harm you guys better get going. I’ll ride back with Dad.”
“You sure?” Harm asked. “I was going to treat everyone to pizza.”
“Better take a raincheck,” Mattie told him.
“Alright. Do I get a hug before I hit the road?” Harm asked the teenager.
“I guess I can spare one for you,” Mattie grinned. “Reduce altitude.”
Harm bent down and Mattie buzzed his cheek with a kiss. Mac smiled. Now she knew where he had picked up that little habit he’d been using on her. She watched as Mattie wrapped her arms around Harm and snuggled against him while he rested his face on her hair and held her naturally in a gentle hug.
“Take care Mattie, and we’ll see you soon.” Harm said as he released her.
“Thanks for coming Mac. Will you come with him again?”
“I’d like that Mattie.”
“Cool.” Mattie hugged Mac quickly, but it was a start.
Waving good-bye they headed for the city and another snowstorm.
Next morning
JAG Headquarters
Mac was sent with Vukovic to deal with piracy in the Straits of Malacca. She was going to miss the party introducing the Roberts twins and she was going to have to put up with her biggest headache yet on this assignment. General Creswell swore that Vukovic and Rabb were too much alike so Mac was stuck with the task. Normally this assignment would be right up here ally, even though she was being sent to the same area that Webb had supposedly been killed. Even though he was alive and well and she was totally over him in a romantic way, that event coincided with other events that caused her emotions to run high. It was going to make the job ahead that much trickier.
While Mac was sent to one side of the world, Harm was being called back to Florida to access the latest damages from the most recent hurricane. It made it a little easier knowing they were both gone.
Mac and Vukovic had a commercial flight for the first part of their trip. She was glad that they had not been seated together. She wanted time to figure out what it was that bothered her the most about the Lieutenant’s attitude. Reclined in her seat with her eyes shut, Mac decided to let her mind explore a few things, and if she should fall asleep, it would be a bonus.
Besides trying to get a handle on Vukovic, she was stymied as to why she was holding something back in regards to Harm. He was making it pretty clear that he wanted them to move forward. He was inching his way beyond the barriers she had erected around herself when the whole Lt. Singer debacle had exploded on them. She knew that Harm had not been involved with Singer, but the hurt little girl inside of her felt that Harm had finally shown his feet of clay after all the time they had been together. She had built walls around herself and not being allowed to see him had given them time to set.
When Webb had tapped her for his mission in Paraguay, she had needed to see Harm before she left. With just moments to spare she had stopped for a visit to discover that he was like the others and wanted to control her - or so her thought in that moment when he had asked her not to go on the mission. It had reminded her of Mic in that moment and so she had walked away and took the mission determined more then ever to see it through. Mac knew now that Clayton Webb had fed her doubts and once again he made a plain simple declaration and she was ready to embrace him and take his words of love at face value. Harm’s voice saying, “The men you pick,” was clear in her mind.
Why can’t I stop myself when a man is obvious about his interest in me? I know I do it but I can’t seem to stop myself. Maybe that’s why I don’t want to deal with Vukovic. He’s young, charming, good looking, and he flatters me. Getting involved with him would be fraternization and I’m not going there...but if he comes on strong can I stand up to it? I can’t answer that. I don’t know what I’ll do....and that’s what’s holding me back. That’s why I won’t go to Harm and meet him half way...because I don’t trust myself and I won’t do that to him.
Focusing on the real issues was exhausting and Mac fell into a deep sleep. When she awoke, Lt. Vukovic was at her side.
“How did you managed to switch seats?” Mac asked him.
“Just kept trading to I got here. You know you are a beautiful woman.”
“I’m a marine and your superior officer and you’d do well to remember that, Lieutenant.”
“Yes Ma’am.”
Mac looked away and thought to herself. Good job so far Mac. Keep up the good work and maybe soon you can trust yourself around charmers enough to go to Harm.
PART 4
One week later
Once again Harm and Mac arrived back almost at the same time. Mac called Harm’s cell phone to leave him a message that she was almost home and to call when he got in. She headed for Georgetown from Dulles, glad that they had been able to get a commercial flight home after their mission. She felt great about several things on that mission, not the least of which was impressing another man with her kick butt abilities. It wasn’t something they expected from a JAG and certainly not a beautiful female JAG. She knew she had earned some respect from her charge on that mission.
Harm checked his voice mail on his cell phone while he walked to his car. One message from Mattie asking him if the hurricane got him and telling him to call. The second was from Mac. He checked his watch and realized he had just missed her call. She was on her way home at that moment. He jumped into the Lexus and headed for Georgetown. He had missed her.
He had just parked on the street when he saw her car approach. She slowed down and rolled her window down.
“Hey Sailor. Just get here?”
“Yeah. I hope you don’t mind me stopping by like this.”
“Not at all. Go on up and I’ll be right there.”
Harm locked his car and trotted across the street and up the outside stairs. She was just stepping off the elevator when he entered her hall. He kissed her cheek and took control of her bags.
“I know, you’re a Marine...but humor me this once.”
“Thank you Harm.”
They ended up ordering out and sharing their mission experiences until it was once again almost midnight.
“I’ve got to go.”
“It’s late Harm...why don’t you camp here tonight?”
“Thanks Mac, but I don’t think that would be a good idea tonight.”
“Why not?”
“Mac,” Harm said pleading for her to understand just by the way he said her name.
“I guess you’re right.”
“Walk me to the door?”
“Okay.”
Harm slipped his jacket on and then started to open her apartment door but closed it again and reached for her. She heard him say, “I missed you Mac,” before his lips took hers in a gentle kiss.
While she was still recovering from the effects of that simple gesture, he went out and shut the door behind him leaving a bemused woman in his wake. Smiling she touched her lips where his had been and then shut off the light and headed for her bed. That kiss was going to keep her awake all night or give her sweet dreams. She wasn’t sure which it would be.
Next morning
JAG Headquarters
“You’re looking well rested after your trip, Ma’am,” Bud greeted Mac as she stepped off the elevator.
“Thank you Bud...I am. How are Harriet and the babies?”
“Great Ma’am. You’ll have to come over and see everyone seeing as you missed the party.”
“Sorry about that Bud. It couldn’t be helped.”
“I know. It’s just not the same anymore without Admiral Chegwidden, you and Commander Rabb at our gatherings.”
“Good morning Harm.”
“Mac. Bud.”
“Talk to Mattie yet?” Mac asked.
“No. By the time I got home last night it was too late and I over slept so there was no time this morning. I’ll talk to her later. So what’s on the docket today?” Harm asked.
“Staff call in five minutes, Sir...Ma’am.”
General Creswell announced that the JAG conference was moving to San Diego to get them out of the cold and snow for a change. While Mac, Mayfield, Creswell and Vukovic were going, Sturgis and Bud were scheduled to be in court and Harm was tapped as the JAG in Creswell absence.
Needing to deal with laundry so that she could turn around and pack for another trip tied up Mac’s time. They were leaving on Wednesday for San Diego. There was no time for Harm and Mac to spend another stolen evening together while Harm came up to speed as the JAG and Mac packed her bags.
Mattie and Harm played phone tag but Harm was pleased that Mattie was happy and things were going well for her, even though he missed her. He had enjoyed spending the day with Mattie and Mac that day. He knew without a doubt that he saw a young Mac in Mattie originally which is why he had been so taken with her. He wanted to do for her what he had wished someone would have done for Mac when she had been hurt, lost and alone as a young teenager. He certainly hadn’t expected that Mattie would give as much back to him and help heal the little lost, lonely hurt kid inside of him. But that’s what she had done.
Harm was given the chance to demonstrate why he made a good JAG, when he reviewed Commander Turners case with him and approved his settlement after a few clarifying questions. His reward was seeing the surprise on Turner’s face when he announced his approval. Harm hadn’t had time to enjoy his silent gloat however, because at that exact moment, Petty Officer Coates appeared and gave him the message that would send his world into a tail spin yet again.
Harm excused Turner and Coates as he grabbed for the phone. “Commander Rabb. What’s happened?”
“Sir, we were asked by Tom Johnson to notify you that Mathilda Johnson was brought into emergency following an airplane collision. She is alive at this time, but Mr. Johnson has asked that you join him here as soon as possible.”
“Can you tell me how bad she’s hurt? Is she conscious?”
“I’m sorry sir, I’m not at liberty to give you details regarding her injuries, but Mr. Johnson asked me to tell you that she is in a coma and on life support and he doesn’t understand what the doctors are telling him.”
“Thank you for that. Listen, I have to find coverage and get permission to leave my post...It’s a three hour drive at best...I should be able to get there in about four hours. Please let Mr. Johnson know...and if there are any changes, please call my cell phone.” Harm gave them the number and then hung up. He immediately put in a call to Creswell but couldn’t get an answer. Harm then tried the SecNav, getting through immediately.
“What can I go for you Commander Rabb?”
“Thank you for taking my call, sir,” Harm paused trying to maintain military decorum while desperately needing to be there for Mattie. “Sir, As you know General Creswell left me in charge here at JAG while he is at conference in San Diego. Unfortunately I have a family emergency sir and I was unable to reach the General. I would like authorization from you to leave Commander Turner in charge while I deal with the situation sir.”
“Is it life or death Commander?”
Harm drew on every bit of composure he could muster before answering the pointed question he did not want to deal with. “Yes Sir, it is.”
“Is it your mother?”
“No sir, I have a ward from the state of Virginia that was just recently reunited with her father. Her mother is deceased. She is like a daughter to me sir and her father has asked that I assist him in dealing with some of the medical concerns.”
“I see. And how long was she a part of your family?”
“She Basically lived with me for over a year, sir.”
“I see. I want you to check in with Turner daily until Creswell returns or until he grants permission for you to take the leave. There is a reason you were left in charge and not Turner this time.”
“Aye, aye sir. Thank you.”
“I hope everything turns out well for your family, Commander.”
“Thank you sir.” Harm hung up and buzzed Coates. “Petty Officer please join me in the office and close the door behind you.”
“Sir?” Jennifer asked, her voice shaky.
“It’s not good. How much did they tell you?”
“Not much.”
“I’ll explain what I know. She was in an airplane that collided with another airplane. She’s in a coma and is on life support and Tom wants me there. They said its too soon to tell much more until the specialist gets there.”
“Are you going out there?”
“Yes. Commander Turner will deal with anything that can’t wait. I’ll check in twice a day until further notice. I’ll keep trying to reach the General.”
“You want me to send Commander Turner in?”
“Yes...and Jennifer?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll keep you posted.”
“If Colonel Mackenzie calls?”
“Tell her I’ll call, but fill her in for me please.”
“Yes sir.”
“Thanks Jennifer.”
“Drive carefully sir.”
Visitor’s Quarters
San Diego
Mac put her cell phone away again and leaned on the balcony looking at the stars overhead. She felt horrible putting Harm off when he called, but the reality didn’t hit her until after she thought about his call. There had been something in his voice that had alerted her that something wasn’t the same in his voice, but she chalked it up to loneliness until someone mentioned Bud Roberts during dinner.
The reality slammed into Mac then. Oh my God, he was upset about something...something has happened and he was reaching out to me and I wasn’t there for him...I had to go eat, and in typical Harmon Rabb fashion, he puts aside his needs for someone else.
“Damn! Why didn’t I realize sooner that something was wrong?” Mac grabbed her cell phone and regardless of the hour on the east coast she tried to call him. She wasn’t surprised to get his voice mail. It was nearly zero one hundred on the east coast. She decided to leave him a message.
“Harm, it’s Mac...I’m sorry I didn’t take your call earlier...what’s happened? Is it your mother? Mattie? You? Please call me as soon as you get this and fill me in okay? I miss you Harm.” Mac ended the call and started to put her phone away when it rang. Without checking her caller ID she answered, “Harm?”
“Sorry Colonel, it’s Jennifer Coates, Ma’am.”
“Is Harm okay?”
“Physically, yes, but Mattie’s been hurt...he’s falling apart Ma’am.”
“Tell me what happened Coates.”
Jennifer recited what little she knew from talking to Harm.
“What’s her prognosis? How’s Tom handling this?”
“The doctors haven’t said and for now Tom’s hanging in there. Ma’am, the Commander was unable to reach the General to ask permission for emergency leave so he’s checking in with my twice a day and anything that can’t wait Commander Turner is handling. Can you help get word to the General Ma’am?”
“Of course. Harm did get permission to go didn’t he?”
“Yes Ma’am. He called the SecNav.”
“Good. If you talk to him tell him I’m trying to call him back, okay?”
“Yes Ma’am.”
“Thanks for filling me in Jennifer.”
“I’m worried about them both Ma’am. It reminds me of when he was so strong for all of us when Commander Roberts was hurt, even though her was hurting too.”
“Yes...I know that better then anyone. Trying and keep him together Coates.”
“I’ll do my best Ma’am.”
Mac tried reaching the General next, but couldn’t get a response. She figured he had turned off his cell or the battery was down. She talked to him in the morning. She tried Harm again and got his voice mail again.
“Harm, its me again. I just talked to Jennifer. I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you..I should have known you wouldn’t have called for no reason. Please call me...and take care of yourself. I’ll talk to the General first thing in the morning. Call me when you get this. I need to know how she’s doing too. I’ll be there with you as soon as I can.”

Harm’s Apartment
The alarm went off and he flew out of bed and hit the shower. He threw two sets of civilian clothes in a bag and dressed in a clean uniform. He checked his messages while he waited for his breakfast. Mac had called and left two messages for him. He listened to both of them and the messages from Coates, Turner, and Harriet Roberts. He relaxed when he knew there were no more calls from the hospital. They had kicked him out at twenty-two hundred the night before and nothing he did or said would change their minds. They threatened to have security remove him and then bar him from the hospital, but he couldn’t risk it so he had left Tom sitting with Mattie.
He had driven home arriving about the time Mac had called with her first message. He had fallen into bed and sleep had claimed him right away. With four hours sleep, he was heading for JAG. He hoped to get in and out early so he could be at the hospital by the time visiting hours began. He needed to be there for himself, for Mattie and for Tom.
Harm knew seeing Jennifer would be tough, but he kept his military bearing in mind and handled the situation with the calm confidence he had used when Bud was hurt. He also tried to calm himself and remind himself that Bud had beaten the odds and made it, and that Mattie could too.
Harm finally reached General Creswell at zero eight hundred local time, five am on the west coast. “Sir, I’ve been trying to reach you. I’ve had an emergency and requested permission from the SecNav to lead JAG to deal with the situation during the day. I’m trying to check in each morning for a couple of hours and then call in each afternoon. Commander Turner is handling anything that can’t wait. May I have your permission to continue this pattern until you return sir?”
“Who’s involved in the emergency Commander and is it life or death?”
“Its my ward, sir, she’s like a daughter to me...she’s in a coma and on life support. They haven’t given us a prognosis and they’re telling us decisions may have to be made.”
“Her parents?”
“Her mother is deceased sir, and her father is a recovering alcoholic, only recently on the wagon. He’s asked for my assistance sir.”
“I prefer you handle as much as possible until I get back in about two days, but I know you are needed elsewhere as well...anyone with a family knows your dilemma. You’ve handled it well.”
“Yes sir. Thank you General.”
“Carry on Commander.”
“Aye, aye sir.” Grabbing his cover and brief case with some papers to review, he made his escape getting on the road to Blacksburg before zero nine hundred. When he arrived at noon time Tom Johnson was gone. Harm asked around and discovered that Tom had apparently left shortly after he had the night before. Before he left he did manage to find a notary to witness his signature giving written consent for the hospital to recognize Commander Harmon Rabb Junior as parent for Mathilda Grace Johnson on his behalf.
After Harm got an update from the doctor he sat with Mattie, talking to her. He just felt that if she knew he was there and that no matter what he would be there for her she could fight this and win.
As the day wore on and progress was not forthcoming and Tom Johnson didn’t return, Harm began to face that he might have to make the tough decisions on his own. As things got more and more difficult, Harm knew he was pulling inside himself. It was the way he had survived during tough times before ...alone... resolved... determined... and he would do it again. He also knew that as soon as he let his guard down the tiniest bit, he would fall apart.
Unlike when Bud was injured Mac wasn’t here to pull him together when the meltdown came...so he would keep it together until he knew she was there for him...or until he was totally alone at home once again.
Tom Johnson finally showed up late that afternoon and Harm knew he had been drinking. He did his best to fill the man in on his daughter and to discuss the notarized consent for the hospital to deal with Harm.
“Tom, Mattie needs you.”
“I can’t do it Commander. She needs you more then me. I can’t do this anymore.”
“Knock it off Tom. Go home. Get some food and some sleep and come back tomorrow to support this girl.”
“I can’t...I just can’t...” Tom muttered over and over as he left the room, the hospital and the wagon for good.
Three Days later
JAG Headquarters
“Jennifer have you heard from Commander Rabb?”
“Yes Ma’am. He called yesterday afternoon and said that as long as you and the General were back today he wouldn’t be in again until Monday.”
“Its going to kill him if he has to decide what to do about life supports, you know that as well as I do.”
“Yes Ma’am. He did say the doctors said they were seeing some brain activity which was small but a slight improvement.”
“Good...any improvement is a step in the right direction. I just wish he would return my calls.”
“I know Ma’am...”
“I’m going to check with the General and try to secure early today to go see him myself.”
“He’ll probably push you away Ma’am.”
“I know...but I’ve got to try.”
“Yes, Ma’am.”
After getting permission from the General to secure early and promising to tell Harm that the General told him he could take as much time as he needed, she changed into civilian attire she had in the car and headed out on a three hour drive.
As Mac drove she thought about the things she had started to realize about herself since dealing with Lt. Vukovic. His charm didn’t take her breath away. His familiarity wasn’t cute or persistent but pathetic. His attempts at pushing the limit were not heroic as there was something in it for himself - another win, a point to prove, the thrill of getting the upper hand. His appreciation for her beauty left her cold.
The reality slowly dawned on Mac as she drove toward Harm. She was finally in a place where she knew what she wanted. She would not be tempted by any good looking guy. She had tested the waters and kissed a few frogs and now more then ever she knew who her prince was. Somewhere in this past year she had bridged that gulf that had been between them, and she was getting close to where she could let go. Going to Harm now was the first step. He wasn’t in a place where he would be receptive, and she knew that. But she could be there for him to support him and console him if necessary.
She shook her head with a discouraged chuckle at the irony. Now she was ready to go to him, and he wasn’t in a place to know what he wanted for himself. A year ago, she was the one that wasn’t ready to accept him and he had informed her he would be there when she was ready. He had confirmed it for her when he came to her in the hospital on Christmas Eve promising her that he was still there and nothing had changed. He still wanted to be a part of her life. Fate was certainly giving them a run for their money.
PART 5
Outside Mattie’s Room
Blacksburg Hospital
Harm watched Mattie and the equipment that was keeping her alive. He knew Mac was bound to show up sooner or later and he was dreading it. Mac had a habit of making him confront things he wasn’t ready to deal with. She would ask questions he didn’t have answers for. And if she showed an ounce of compassion, he might just fall apart here tonight and he could not - would not - do that.
No one had seen Tom for three days and Mattie needed someone that could keep it together for her; pray for her; talk to her; keep hope alive. He had done it for his father when no one else had, and he had been right...his father had been alive when he went looking for him...he was just looking in the wrong place.
Just then Mac heard Mac’s voice. He closed his eyes and tried not to look at her. Her kindness and caring would be his undoing.
Mac’s heart broke when she spotted him. He looked tired and hadn’t shaven since yesterday morning. She could see him push away any trace of hopelessness to keep everyone’s hope alive for Mattie. When she realized that Tom was on a binge she realized that no matter what happened now or in the future, Harm and Mattie would be a package deal. If she got one, she got the other. Mac thought about that for a minute and realized that was something she could live with.
She had asked Harm why he hadn’t returned her calls, and his answer was exactly as she had suspected. She didn’t argue with him even if she didn’t totally agree. She almost fell apart and lost her resolve when she had reached out to him and touched him and he had practically begged her not to with his uttered, “Don’t.” In time she had caught herself and took a deep breath and just let him know she would be there if he needed her. She walked away and went to the cafeteria for coffee letting him know he needed to let her know when he needed her.
Harm watched Mac walk away. Part of him wanted to call her back then and there and bury his head against her letting his tears of anger, frustration, sadness, and desperation pour out as he wrapped her in his arms. Instead he took a deep breath and tried to get his composure back. When he felt that he had control again he rounded the corner to find Mac sitting outside a empty room sipping a cup of coffee.
“Mac...”
“I thought I might see you again.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No need. What do you need me to do?”
“Will you sit with Mattie awhile? Just talk to her. We don’t know how much she can hear, but they think its helping to stimulate parts of her brain.”
“Sure. Will you get some rest?”
“Not yet. I’m going to try and find Tom. Look, I’ve got a room at the hotel across the road. Here’s my key. Why don’t you stay over and then head back in the morning?”
“Are you going to be there or here?” Mac asked fearing he would return to the hospital.
“I’ll be there as soon as I find him, unless there’s a change.”
“You want me to get you a sandwich or something?”
“I’m okay.”
“Harm, you’ve got to eat to keep up your strength. I’ll get you something so you have it if you want it.”
“Thanks. I’ll see you at the hotel later.”
0510 Local
Harm’s Hotel Room
The ringing phone woke Mac with a start.
“Hello?”
“Mac...its me...did you get some sleep?”
“Yeah...where are you?”
“Mattie’s house.”
“You find Tom?”
“Yeah...look Mac, you’re going to need to get on the road if you’re going to get back to JAG on time. Thanks for checking on me.”
“What do you want me to do with your room key?”
“Put it in an envelope with my name on it and leave it at the desk for me.”
“Alright. Harm...?”
“I’ll talk to you soon Mac.” Harm put down the phone and leaned his head into his hands.
While one part of him needed to be with Mac, the other part of him feared what would happen to Mattie if he let himself fall apart. He was all she had. Tom had washed his hands of her tonight in his drunken stupor. Harm had stood there and watched Tom pass out. He managed to get him into the truck and drove him back to the house. He had gone in to get some things together for Mattie to have at the hospital when she woke up. He refused to give up hope on her. She deserved better then that.
Harm went through the desk in the home office and found the file with the court papers. He used the home office copier to make copies and then printed out his cover letter that he planned to file at the courthouse in the morning. He also prepared a letter for the hospital to sign reporting that Tom Johnson had shown up drunk on one occasion and then abandoned her for days turning parental authority over to Harmon Rabb Junior. Papers and the bag for Mattie in hand, he secured the house and waited for the taxi to pick him up and return him to the hospital. He tried not to think about Mac driving away from him.
The following week Harm received a call from General Creswell. “Commander, has there been any change?”
“Unfortunately not sir.”
“I hate to pull you back here, but there’s been an incident and I need you here at JAG in the morning. I’m going to have to send you away.”
“I understand sir. I’ll be there in the morning. I appreciate you giving me the time you have sir.”
“We’ll keep your schedule as loose as possible when we can, Commander.”
“Understood sir.”
Harm and Mac had only a few minutes to exchange pleasantries before they were sent off on their respective assignments. Harm was glad that he was going with Bud, because Bud understood how Harm handled things and he wouldn’t ask questions or bring up Mattie unless Harm invited him too.
Harm had seen the hurt in Mac’s face and it killed him to know he had put it there again, but he just couldn’t put what he was feeling in words to anybody just now. Harm wanted Mac to understand that he wasn’t shutting her out but he couldn’t find the words and he knew just saying, “I’m not shutting you out” wasn’t believable.
If Harm had not found Tom in the state he had been in, he was sure he would have returned to the hotel and found solace with Mac for a few hours and he thought Mac would have welcomed him. They were drawing closer which was why he had to find a way to help her understand what was going on with him before she thought he was pushing her away out of revenge or something.
Three Weeks Later
JAG Headquarters
Harm finally found Mac in the conference room. He was hoping she would agree to go get lunch with him. He had some things he needed to say, but not at JAG.
“Hey, you want to grab some lunch?”
“Bud and I already ordered out, but there’s plenty if you want to join Bud and me.”
“No thanks,” Harm felt his energy drain right out of him. Once again he waited until the last minute and Mac moved on.
“I haven’t seen much of you lately. How’s Mattie?”
“She’s about the same.”
“Anything I can do?” Mac asked just as Bud slips past Harm with their lunch.
“No. Look all I really want to know is if you and your client are going to accept my offer.”
Jennifer Coates joins them at that point as well as Bud, Mac and Harm are discussing the case. Jen’s words tear Harm’s guts a little more when he asked them a ‘what kind of doctor’ question and Coates smartly tells him the kind of doctor he would want for Mattie.
In an attempt to change the subject, he asked about Lt. Vukovic. “I haven’t seen him around much.”
“You’d have better luck if you were a woman, sir,” Bud informs his friend.
Harm couldn’t speak, he just looked around at the others and sees Mac look away. Jealousy flares in his face and he leaves the room. He gets back to his office and shuts the door. He doesn’t want to think what it means that Mac wouldn’t comment or look at him. Is she paying me back for pushing her away? Has his charm and persistence worn her down and she’s decided she still prefers flash to substance?
He was feeling angry with Mac for no good reason, but then jealousy did that to him. It had taken him a long time to admit it and put it in perspective. Harm looks at his watch and packs his briefcase. He needed to be at the Hospital to meet with the doctors. There was no time to ask Mac her advice. He would need to handle this meeting on his own.
Jen had planned to make the trip to Blacksburg after work following her conversation with Mac, but when she mentioned it to Harm, he had asked her to wait until the weekend. She had reluctantly agreed.
Having dealt with the meeting with Mattie’s doctor, he wasn’t feeling anymore hopeful, but he wasn’t feeling any less optimistic either. He still felt he should be able to do something to bring Mattie around. On the drive back to JAG early the next morning, he thought about some of the little things he needed to start doing again to reconnect with Mac. He’d make lunch arrangements with her each morning even if something came up and one of them had to cancel once in awhile. He was determined to smile once in awhile too. He hated the idea of bringing everyone down with him. He needed them to help lift his spirits and if Mac really understood how hopeless the doctors tended to make things, maybe she could understand why he needed to keep her away from there. He wanted her to help him focus on other things. He was past the point where he could let go with anyone...almost anyone...but not yet...only as a last resort.
Their lunch discussion around him and Vukovic with the exchange about youth versus experience made Harm chuckle as did the teasing regarding Mac’s case with the dolphins which resulted in non-stop fish jokes. He remembered the time he had pulled a case with a guy that had mooned someone and the rash of jokes he had endured. It was that camaraderie that made what they had at JAG and with each other so special. Harm knew it was probably that way with any group of people that worked together and got along well, but in his head he wondered if it would ever be the same for him with another group. Would he instill this kind of unity and team work if he got a command billet? He had thought about the General’s comments. While the General felt he still had a shot at making Captain, he wasn’t going to get his hopes up.
He also knew that time would run out on his chances with Mac when that time came. He also had told her to come to him when she was ready to talk about their relationship...and so far she had been receptive to him increasing his attentions toward her. He had however, given her his word that he would be there when she was ready to come to him. Tears came to his eyes when he thought about what could happen if she was never ready to come to him. He couldn’t deal with it right now on top of everything else.
For three days Harm hardly slept as he tackled the work load piled on his desk. There had been no change in Mattie and it was eating at him. He felt he was getting to the point where he was going to have to resort to the one thing he didn’t want to do. He closed his eyes and pictured how hurt Mattie would be when she did wake up if he threatened to walk away if she didn’t give him some hope. She was still on the respirator and the doctors were indicating that it was getting to the point where they would have to make some tough decisions. Because Tom was on a drinking binge, that responsibility was squarely on Harm.
Harm didn’t know if he could keep her alive like she was now, but he didn’t know if he could pull the plugs either. This was something he had to decide. He wanted to keep this out of Jen and Mac’s world. If they didn’t agree with whatever decision he ended up making, he didn’t want to face them. He didn’t want his own words thrown back at him. That’s why he couldn’t talk to either of them no matter how much they begged him to let them in.
Mac stood in Harm’s door way and watched him as he slept. Watching him sleep made her think of those times they had shared a room in some far off corner of the world. She smiled and before realizing that he wouldn’t want just anyone seeing him this way she entered and shut the door. The sound of the door closing woke him up.
“Hey wow...I must have dosed off.”
“You work all day; sit up with Mattie all night and drive back and for to Blacksburg. It’s a wonder you can function at all.”
“Oh yeah, I’m real amazing.”
“You know you won’t so any good for Mattie if you fall asleep at the wheel and drive under an eighteen wheeler on the I-81.”
“Not going to happen.”
“What’s her doctor say?”
Spinal injury, minimal brain damage.”
“Minimal is good...right?” Mac asked trying to be hopeful knowing Harm had to be getting discouraged.
“If its so minimal, why won’t she wake up?” Harm snapped. For the first time Mac realized just how fragile Harm was and how hard he was working to keep it together.
Tying to be supportive, she offered, “Maybe you should take a few days leave. I’m sure the General would understand.” Mac saw the play of emotions play across Harm’s face. Anger upon them.
“See this back log - not to mention this case I was just handed with Vukovic? What do you know about this guy? You worked with him. Is he as arrogant as he seems?”
Mac recognized two things. Harm had just changed the subject away from Mattie again and he wasn’t pushing her away. He honestly wanted her input.
“He’s a handful. He’s young, brash...thinks he invented the courtroom con...it will be good for him to work with you.”
“Why?”
“He’ll learn from you.”
“Oh yeah? He learn from you?” Harm asked, immediately knowing it hadn’t come out just right.
“We haven’t slept together if that’s what you’re asking. Go home Harm...get some sleep.”
“Can’t...Got a meeting....Excuse me...” Mac watched Harm dash from his office and smiled.
Mac knew that Harm was jealous and he wasn’t trying to be mean with his sarcastic comment. She actually thought he had been trying to tease her and it hadn’t come out just right. Instead of getting angry with him, she had tried to reassure him and soothe the green-eyed monster at the same time. She suspected that his sudden escape was to hide his embarrassment.
Harm found Vukovic at the elevator on his way for the meeting as well. He decided to lay the law down with the young pup right away and see how the guy dealt with it. Harm found that Vukovic gave it right back in plain talk. Harm nodded. He could work with a guy that was on the up and up. Harm’s opinion changed a short time later after he needed to end the meeting with the prosecuting attorney, Lt. Commander Roberts. It was then that the younger man’s true colors started showing through.
The next day, after another trip to Blacksburg, Harm had been out straight. He had made up his mind that he needed to take drastic measures and have some tough talk with Mattie tonight. He was sitting in his office trying to think things through when he heard a sound at his door. He looked up and spotted Mac.
“Come in. I’m not sleeping.”
“Long day?”
“Aren’t they all?”
“Going to see Mattie later?”
“Probably.”
“I’d like to come with you.”
“That’s not necessary.”
“I know its not necessary. I’d like to.”
“Another time.” Harm saw the hurt in her face and her words were almost more then he could bear at that moment.
“When I needed support you were there and I pushed you away. I suppose I deserve this.”
“I’m not pushing you away Mac. Its not about pay back.”
“Harm you can’t keep going like this. You have to let someone in. If not me, fine...but someone.”
Harm just studied her not saying a word. I can’t let her come tonight...I’ve got to confront Mattie alone.
“Say hi to Mattie for me,” Mac said as she got up and walked away.
Harm watched her go and vowed to himself fill her in soon.
Petty Officer Jennifer Coates saw Mac leaving Harm’s office and cornered her. “Ma’am?”
“Yes?”
“Will he let you go?”
“No...his exact words were, ‘another time,’” Mac told the Petty Officer.
“That’s what he told me the last time I asked. I’m not asking tonight...I’m just going.”
“I’d go with you but I can’t now after I’ve asked.”
“Understood Ma’am.”
PART 6
Later that Night
Mattie’s Hospital Room
Harm sat there watching her for over an hour before he decided that it was now or never. He had read an article the doctor had given him about various techniques people had successfully used to help wake up comatose patients. Although there wasn’t a lot of supporting research to prove any one method over another, his gut was now telling him that this was his last resort with Mattie. If he couldn’t get through to her this time then he would have to accept that his optimism was misplaced. He took a deep breath and edged up closer to her bed.
“Damn it Mattie! You’ve got to give me something! I’m coming here for weeks now to watch you suck air through a tube. Give me a sign...You’ve got to give me some hope. I can’t keep doing this...” the desperation was plain in his voice. He didn’t see Jennifer Coates standing behind him. She heard almost every word he spoke. A slight movement got his attention and he turned and spotted Jennifer Coates.
“I didn’t expect to see you tonight.”
“Why don’t you take a break and let me sit with her awhile?”
Harm’s silent nod as he made his escape from the room spoke volumes. Jen let him go and turned her attention to Mattie, only to discover that her eyes were open.
“Sir! You’ve got to see this!” Jennifer called out.
Harm rushed back to Mattie’s side and immediately saw her eyes opened. “Mattie? Can you hear me?...I’ll get a doctor.” Harm was gone again and Jennifer moved closer to Mattie.
“It’s okay Mattie. Stay with us...Harm’s gone to get the doctor...he needed you to do this. Thank you, Mattie.”
Jennifer stepped back with Harm as the doctor and nurse examined Mattie. As the nurse recorded the vitals and then settled Mattie again, the doctor turned to Harm.
“It’s a good sign, Harm, but she’s not completely out of the woods yet. She was responsive to light and touch and sound. No movement in her limbs yet, but her body may wake up more slowly due to the other injuries. I’m going to let you see her for a few more minutes, and then she needs sleep. You can come back tomorrow after we removed her from the respirator. Try to reassure her and let her know she needs her sleep.”
“Thank you doctor. Jennifer, give me a little time and I’ll follow you back to the city if you’d like.”
“Okay. I’ll go give the Colonel an update.”
“Thanks Jen...and let her know I’ll call her soon.”
Harm turned back to Mattie and looked into her frightened eyes. “Can you blink your eyes Mattie?”
Mattie’s eyes shut and then opened.
“Good. Can you do one for yes and two for no?”
One blink followed. Harm knew he needed to test this so he asked Mattie a trick question.
“Do you want some Tofu pizza?”
Two blinks immediately followed.
“Good girl...now we can communicate a little. Could you hear me talking to you?”
One blink.
“Thank you for opening your eyes. I told the doctors not to give up on you but I was getting desperate. Did you think I was mad at you?”
Two blinks.
“I’m sorry. I’m not angry...I was scared. I can’t lose you Mattie. I started out trying to be there for you and it turns out I needed you even more then you needed me.”
Two blinks.
“No...arguing with me already...another good sign. Look the doctor wants you to sleep. Are you in a lot of pain?”
One blink.
“Good. You rest and I’ll be back tomorrow and then we can talk...you’ll be off the respirator then. You okay if I leave for the night?”
One blink.
“I’ll stay if you want me too. Oh yeah I’ve got to ask a question...Do you want me to stay with you tonight?”
Two blinks.
“Good night...I love you, Mattie...and we’ll get through this.”
No blink...she closed her eyes and Harm could tell she was asleep as her facial muscles relaxed and she almost looked like Mattie...accept for the equipment.
“Jennifer, have you eaten?”
“Yes sir. I brought you a tabouli pocket, sir.”
“Thanks Jen...did you talk to Mac?”
“Yes sir. She said she’ll be up late so don’t be afraid to call when you get home. Sir, I’m going to head home. Just watch for me on the road side in case I break down.”
“Alright...call my cell when you get home so I know you made it safely.”
“Yes sir.”
Harm picked up the sandwich and headed for his cell phone. He punched in Mac’s number while he unwrapped the sandwich.
“Harm?”
“Hey Mac....she woke up.”
“That’s what Jen said.”
“You put her up to coming out here tonight didn’t you?”
“We are all worried about you Harm.”
“I know...but there were things I had to deal with on my own...I needed you upbeat and ready to tease me and make me smile...I’m sorry you felt I was pushing you away...I really wasn’t Mac.”
“I know...Harm, when Bud was hurt, you kept it together and gave us all strength, but I was there and I remember what happened when they said Bud was going to make it.”
“Mac...please don’t...”
“Harm listen to me, please.”
“I’m listening.”
“If you want to stop here on your way home tonight...its okay...I promise I won’t ask questions.”
“Thank you...I think tonight I want to get some sleep, but can I take a raincheck?”
“Of course...and you don’t even have to wait for the rain.”
Harm smiled at Mac’s feeble joke.
“Thanks for the humor, Mac. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
The next several days passed in a blur for Harm. He had four cases that came to a head, one of which was his case with Vukovic. He had gone back to see and talk with Mattie two days after she woke up as they needed to remove the respirator slowly and she had slept a lot that first day. The doctor and called and advised Harm not to make the trip for another day.
In the meantime, Harm had heard from children services and an emergency decree to grant him full custody had been approved. His request for adoption was on hold until Mattie could be interviewed and Tom Johnson could be located. With a possible change in venue coming up, Harm knew that he would have to adopt Mattie to be able to take her out of the region with him. He was also hoping to talk to Mac and see if she would be willing to share the responsibility of Mattie with him.
When Harm talked to Mattie, he hadn’t been proud of the fact that he had tried to lie to her about Tom. He apologized and then admitted to the steps he had taken to ensure that she would be taken care of and not be alone.
“Mattie, unless you tell me you absolutely don’t want the adoption, I want to move forward with it. It doesn’t mean you’ll have to severe yourself from Tom, but it will make sure you have what you need and are loved and protected as you deserve.”
“I know. Thank you.”
“When you’re ready, the social worker will come talk to you. Until then, I don’t want you worrying about anything but getting better.”
“How’s Mac?”
“Good. She’s worried about you.”
“She here?”
“Not tonight...I’ll see if see can come next time...and I’ll have her call you tomorrow, okay?”
“You and Mac...never mind...I know...you’re working on it,” Mattie smiled. Her speech was slow but clear.
“Yes, but we’ll be making some decisions soon, I think.”
“She better not hurt you again.”
Harm smiled as his protective cub. “We’ve hurt each other a lot Mattie but I’m hoping we’re working through and that Mac will come to me soon.”
“Yo go to her.”
“Done that Mattie...the deal is, I’m going to wait until she comes to me...of course I’ve been giving her some little nudges.”
“Smart man. Come here.” Mattie held Harm’s gaze until he bent close to her. He felt her lips on his cheek. “Love you Dad.”
“Love you too Mattie,” Harm whispered not caring that there were tears in his eyes. That night on his way back home, he stopped at Mac’s apartment. He could see a light on so he went to her door and knocked. Mac opened the door to him and without a word she opened her arms and he held her against him, hiding his face against her hair.
Mac got him to the sofa. He pulled her into his arms and on to his lap. She could feel his body shake and felt his tears soaking her hair and robe where they fell. Mac might have been alarmed, but she knew how stoic this man was until everything was okay. Her guess was Mattie had told him she loved him or called him Dad and that was more emotion then he could handle in his warn down state.
Tonight was not a night to talk. It was a night to hold and be held and express the rawest emotions if necessary. Given Harms level of exhaustion, Mac didn’t expect him to want sex. She did think he needed human contact, so after his quiet sobs eased, she stood without a word and led him to her bedroom. The look on her face reminded her that the man could still be a bit of a prude at least when it came to her.
“Harm, this isn’t about sex...its comfort and human contact and the need to sleep. Go use the bathroom while I lock up and then get into bed. I’ll be back in a minute.”
He was just undressing when she returned so she headed into the bathroom to give him a little more privacy. When she came back out, he was almost asleep. When she slid into bed, he reached for her and drew her close to him. No more pretending for Harm when it came to needing Mac and she knew it.
Mac knew she would need to go to him soon but she wanted to let things calm down with Mattie and the custody issue first.
That wasn’t to be however. Two days later, all hell broke lose at JAG Headquarters.
Mac heard the words that the General spoke and it registered slowly as he handed over her new orders. Harm, showed his support as usual by reminding her it was only five hours flight time to the west coast. And then things were really stirred up. Harm was going to be going to London as the Force Judge Advocate for Europe and he was now a Captain.
Mac was so proud of Harm, but her pleasure in her new assignment dissipated as the reality of the situation snuck in. Harm was now of higher rank. While her assignment was a dream command assignment, she knew that they would have to make tough choices or this really would be the end for them.
Harm on the other hand was humbly pleased to have made Captain. He knew that this was a career move for him that put him in an excellent position to eventually have a shot at coming back to JAG in the top spot. But what really pleased him, is that this would put him in an income bracket that would allow him to be able to handle the financial responsibilities of being a family man. While he was proud of Mac, he also thought there could be other options out there that would allow them to find a resolution. Although he didn’t want to have to give up his career in order to be with her, he would if that was the only way they could make it work.
They both walked out of there in a daze, Mac more so then Harm. Harm made sure to remind her that they had a lot of decisions to make soon, and it had nothing to do with who they would take with them to their new assignments.
Harm returned to his office and called Mattie.
“I just got some news today and it will have an impact on you. You ready?”
“Yes.” Mattie spoke into the phone as the nurse held it for her.
“I was just told that I made Captain.”
“Cool...Captain Rabb...sounds good.”
“Thanks.”
“More?”
“Yes...it comes with a new assignment to London England.”
“Okay.”
“Mattie..it means I’ll have to adopt you in order to take me with you.”
“That’s okay. Harm this is a good thing. Go for it.”
“Your sure?”
“Yes. Mac?”
“She’s been assigned to San Diego and has her own command too.”
“Not good.”
“No...but I’ve got an idea.”
“Tell me?”
“How would you feel if I asked Mac to adopt you too?”
“Really?”
“Yes. It would give you two parents again and even if Mac and are aren’t together, I need to know someone is close enough to get to you if you need someone before you are ready to be moved.”
“Not a good reason.”
“It’s a start...I’m hoping for more too.”
“Okay then.”
“You sure?”
“Yes Captain.”
“Love you.”
“Love you too. Good luck.”
“Talk to you soon.”
Harm had set the first part of his plan in motion.
Later Harm went to Macs apartment. All the way there he kept talking to himself.
I’ve got to give her another nudge. I really want her to come to me before I say what’s in my heart. I have one more shot at this and it has to be done right. Tonight, I want to talk to her about Mattie now Mattie is on board.
Mac welcomed him and after a brief conversation about real estate and what they were going to do with their apartments and how they were handling the news, Harm worked the conversation around to Mattie. Mac had given him the perfect opening.
“Speaking of taking things one day at a time...I talked to Mattie tonight. We’ve decided it makes sense to push on the adoption issue now. You know, Mac, Mattie’s not going to be able to leave the hospital or be transported anywhere for awhile.”
“I know. Are you okay with it?”
“Hard not to be when you heard Mattie’s take on the whole thing. Anyway, it will be hard for me to get a flight over here to see her and it could impact the adoption. Do you think you’d be willing to be the emergency back up for me?”
“I love to help you with Mattie...but how can we do that?”
“Would you be willing to adopt her too?”
“What?”
“Now Mac, this doesn’t replace the deal if you ever decide you want to work on that...but Mattie needs both of us right now...and I need a tie to both of you too.”
“Is it even possible?” Mac asked.
“Yes, according to children’s services, this had been done with other teenagers particularly and its treated as if the parents are divorced and sharing joint custody.”
“Harm, are you sure you want to do that? When I tried to help you before you pushed me away.”
“Mac, I did...and it was because I didn’t know what was going to happen with Mattie. My hope was slipping..”
“And you couldn’t let anyone see you in a moment of weakness.”
“No...I came to you in my moment of weakness, just like I have in the past...just like I’ve tried to get you to do. No, Mac, I didn’t want you and Jen to hate me if I had to make the decision to take her off life support and she didn’t make it.”
“Oh Harm!” Mac cried as she hugged him to her once again. He held her in place, this time enjoying the feel of her body against his. His resolve to let her come to him was weakening and they were running out of time. “You know we would never hate you.”
“I would have hated me. Look Mac, I need to go home and start packing. If you decide you are ready to talk, you know where to find me.” Harm dropped a light kiss on her cheek and quietly left her apartment for his own. On his way to the car the cell phone rang.
“Rabb.”
“You left before I could answer you. Tell Mattie I’d be proud to become her adoptive mother.”
“Thank you. It means a lot to both of us.”
PART 7
In a loft north of Union Station and in an apartment in Georgetown, two career military types began the difficult task of packing up their world in order to start a new life in a new place. Both of them reflected over the journey their lives had taken together for nine years. So many times they had come close, but one of them had backed down, not ready to make a commitment, not ready to chose one thing that gave life meaning over the other thing that gave life meaning.
While Harm thought about what it would mean to him to have to let Mac go, he was determined to remain honorable to the end. While he might tell her how he felt, he would not ask her to chose between him and her career unless she came to him. He had pushed her before and she had run. He had waited for her to realize what they might have if she would wait until he was ready, but she had jumped into a relationship with Mic Brumby. He had given up his career for her once, and she had chosen Clayton Webb over him. Each time he stood by because he expected her to know her own mind.
When Webb had betrayed her, he stood by her side after practically throwing himself at her the very night she found out she may never be able to have baby, then later when she was hurt and confused, he offered to listen to her, let her talk it out with him. She had said she wasn’t ready, so he had told her to come to him when he was ready. This time he had decided he was going to be the bad penny and keep showing up so she wouldn’t forget he was there and waiting for her. At the same time, he tried not to assume anything or be too forward, just calm reassurance every now and again reminding her he was there and waiting. She had begun to respond and give him hope before Mattie’s accident, but that seemed to have been dealt with too.
Mac was thinking about her life since Harm had come into it too. She could still feel the tingle that went up her arm the first time he took her hand and the chill that went up her spine and neck at the way he looked at her. She remembered that no matter what, Harm was there for her. He didn’t judge her. He respected her. It was only when he was hurt or feeling jealous that he said things that sometimes hurt. She also remembered that when he did, he always apologized, while she had just informed him that apologizing was a sign of weakness.
While Mac often teased Harm about being a prude, it really was only when it came to her that she saw that endearing trait played out. He had told her she should be honored and tonight, standing at her window with his words ringing in her ears, she realized that she was proud to know him and call him friend.
“Come to me when you’re ready.” he had said. Was Harm waiting for her to do just that. He had been moving them forward, but he hadn’t made the final step...was she now the one holding them up. Could she make the sacrifice of her career, the one constant in her life that gave it meaning and purpose and direction, to risk making a life with Harmon Rabb Junior? The other alternative - losing Harm wasn’t an option. She dropped her packing, grabbed her jacket and headed for Harmon Rabb. Would he realize what she wanted when she showed up at his door? She would soon find out.
She stood in the doorway to the loft which was open as he taped shut boxes and stacked them to be shipped to London. She could see his muscles rippling beneath the funky flowered shirt he wore. Sometimes his clothes cracked her up. She would never have expected Harmon Rabb to be wearing flowers. She knew the instant he spotted her.
She stepped into the apartment and around some boxes after their initial greeting and he turned to move another box. She heard her voice in the quiet.
“Let’s talk about you and me.”
“We both know that neither of us wants to be the first to say goodbye.”
“Yeah, I know the song, we’ve been singing it for years.”
“Mac, I don’t think I’ll ever like about anyone else the way I feel about you.”
“That’s very flattering. Don’t share that with your wife, who ever she may be, she might not understand.”
“Do you understand?”
“Why we couldn’t make it work? Why we let fate decide our futures? No. I don’t.”
“Let me ask you a personal question. What was it that attracted you to the other guys?”
“They wanted me and let me know it.”
“I wanted you. You knew that.”
“Harm no woman wants to be a mind reader...and with you there were always complications...another woman...work...searching for your father.”
“That’s all past.”
“Is it?”
“Mac, we have twelve hours...”
“We’ve had nine years.”
“I guess I just needed a deadline.”
“Well you got one sailor.”
“What are you proposing? And that’s not a Freudian slip?”
“I’m proposing...let’s get married.”
“In London?”
“Works for me?”
“San Diego works for me.”
“This has always been the 500 pound gorilla in the room.”
“If we get married, one of us had to give up our Navy careers.”
“Well, we could wait until I retire.”
“Yeah what’s another decade or so, huh?”
“I love you Mac....I don’t want to give up my Navy career and you don’t want to give up the Marine Corps.”
“So we’re right back where we started.”
“Do you believe in fate?”
“Well it did bring us together, sort of.”
“Fate could keep us together for ever.”
Mac saw his raised eyebrows and knew he was up to something. She was lost in his kisses for a time, but when he pulled back again to smile at her, she asked for more information.
“What are you thinking Harm?”
“Well, we could start working on a baby, and if you get pregnant...”
“It would definitely be reason enough for me to at least go on inactive reserves...”
“It’s not perfect...”
“No its not...because you know as well as I do that the chances are minimal of it happening without some serious efforts, some of them quite radical.”
“Sounded like fun...”
“We could still attempt it...” Mac spared a thought to where her prude was now.
“Alright...how have we also settled things between us when there was no other way?”
“Flipped a coin?”
“Exactly...and we’ve both won some and lost some. What do you say?”
“Could you really give up your career for me if I won the toss?”
“Yes. Being without you isn’t an option for me Mac.”
“What would you have done, if I hadn’t some here tonight?”
“I was going to come see you later and tell you how I feel and then tell you my door would always be open if you ever changed your mind.”
“Wow...I don’t know what to say.”
“There are a couple of things I haven’t heard that would sound good...when you’re ready.”
“I know...you know, for you the words have never come easy, but for me they have. For years, you’ve shown me over and over how much you love me and I couldn’t see it because I needed the words. Me on the other hand, said the words easily, even when I didn’t mean them. I think I need to find some ways to show you I love you, before I say the words, even though you know I feel them...okay?”
“I can understand that. I can also think of one way you can show me...”
Mac’s laughter was like music to his ears. He loved hearing her laugh... He loved being the one to make her laugh.
“What time do you get your Captain’s bars tonight?”
“I’ve got to get ready now or I’ll be late. Mac, I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay...listen, you go and get sworn in. I’ll meet you at McMurphy’s afterwards.”
“Okay...we should tell Bud and Harriet.”
“And Jen.”
“Have Jen get Creswell there too.”
“Harm, I think we need to have Sturgis there...I’ll tell you why later...actually I’ll let him tell you why later.”
“Okay.”
“Go get ready, and I’ll make some calls before I go home to get dressed.”
“Want to help me shower?” Harm asked impishly.
“Then you will be late. Later Sailor when we have the rest of the night...and that’s a promise.”
“I’ll hold you to it.”
“You’d better...now go.”
Mac called Bud and Harriet first.
“Hey Bud, it’s Mac.”
“Oh hi. Harriet and I were just talking about you and the Commander...I mean Captain. When is he getting sworn in?”
“Tonight...that’s why I’m calling...Look could you meet us at McMurphy’s around 2130 tonight?”
“Are you having a wet down for Harm?”
“Partly...actually we want you to flip a coin for us. We have to make a decision and having some problems deciding so we decided to let fate decide it for us...with the flip of a coin.”
“Well it is kind of late, Ma’am...let me ask Harriet.”
“Have her pick up the other line and I’ll tell you both at the same time what we can’t decide.”
“Hey Mac.”
“Hi Harriet. Are you ready for this? Harm asked me to marry him and we can’t decide where to get married...London or San Diego.”
“Oh my Gosh! Really! This is so exciting.”
“Congratulations!”
“Thank you. Anyway, don’t say anything to anyone yet, we’re going to announce it to Jen, Sturgis, and the General at the wet down at McMurphy’s and we wanted Bud to flip the coin for us. Can you make it?”
“Sure. Mike’s here and the kids are all in bed. We’ll see you later.”
“Thanks. We appreciate it. Talk to you later.”
The next call went to Jennifer Coates who was frantically trying to get things ready for the ceremony at the hotel. Her cell phone rang.
“Hello?”
“Jen, it’s Mac...Harm asked me to call you and invite you to McMurphy’s at 2130 tonight. He wants to make a surprise announcement.” Just then Harm came out of the bedroom dressed in clean boxers and a clean undershirt and passed Mac who was sitting on his bed using the phone.
“Tell Jennifer she’s got to get General Creswell there too. That’s an order.”
“I heard him, Ma’am.”
“Good. See you later.”
Harm pulled on socks then stepped into his black trousers before stepping into his shoes. He pulled on the dress shirt and tucked it in while Mac called Sturgis.
“Sturgis? This is Mac.”
“Good evening. Ready to leave tomorrow.”
“Not quite. Look, I know you and Harm have had your differences and things have been rough lately, but I need you to come to McMurphy’s tonight at 2130. If you do that for me...never mind...just be there...please.”
“McMurphy’s at 2130...that would be right after Harm is sworn in I would imagine.”
“Yes.”
“See you there.”
“Thank you.”
Mac turned then to see Harm looking wonderful in his evening dress uniform. He was so handsome and although he didn’t need to be this dressed up, he chose to wear this uniform because it was easy to change out the boards. No fussing with striped on the sleeves and changing coats. Not only that, it wasn’t every night that a man got engaged.
“Harm, I’ll be there. I’m going to run home and change first.”
“You sure.”
“Yeah...I wouldn’t miss this for anything.”
“Even though when you kiss me I could blow the whole surprise?”
“I’ll risk it...I’m going to run home and I’ll see you there.”
“Pack a bag so you’ll have clothes for morning okay?”
“Yes.” Mac and Harm exchanged another steamy kiss before Mac pulled herself away to go get ready. On the drive to her apartment she decided to wear the red dress she had worn in San Diego. Harm hadn’t seen that one on her and she knew he liked her in red. She wrapped her hair in a towel, stripped off her clothes and hit the shower. In six minutes flat she was dried off and stepping into her foundation garments. Three minutes later her make-up was lightly applied and she was brushing out her hair. Pulling on her sheerest nylons she stepped into her high heels and then slipped into the red dress. A quick look in the mirror told her that everything was in place. With a final swish of her hair, she grabbed her purse and keys and headed for her car, at the last second glad she had thrown her overnight bag in the car earlier when she first went to see Harm.
It was a short drive to the reception where Harm would receive his Captain’s bars. He was waiting for her in the foyer and offered her his arm. He knew he was escorting the most beautiful woman in the place tonight. If he stood a little taller or head his shoulders back a little further no one would blame him. This was a big night for him. And if all went well, he would know where his life would take him in a few hours.
General Creswell met them as they entered the reception area. Jennifer Coates had assisted the General in making sure everything was ready. While the introductions took the longest, the entire ceremony was over in fifteen minutes. Mac had even managed to calmly give Harm a chaste peck on each cheek even though she saw the fire in his eyes flare for a split second telling her he wanted so much more.
Harm and Mac headed for their cars as soon as they could. Jennifer Coates called to Mac just before she got in her car.
“Ma’am...what do I do if the General refuses to join us. I heard him say that he didn’t like to intrude on private celebrations.”
“You heard Harm...think of something.”
“Okay Ma’am.” Jennifer watched Mac drive away and then slid into her own car. She was almost to McMurphy’s when she passed a car with a flat tire which gave her inspiration.
“It’s Petty Officer Coates, General. I’m sorry to bother you, but would you be able to help me out. I’ve got a flat tire.”
“Where are you Coates?”
“Just a couple blocks away, sir. You know where McMurphy’s is?”
“Yes.”
“I managed to get that far.”
“Don’t wait in the parking lot, Coates. Go inside and I’ll find you when I get there.”
“Yes sir.”
As Jennifer got out of her car, she saw Commander Turner heading for the door.
“What’s going on Coates?”
“It’s some kind of surprise sir.”
Inside, Harm and Mac were greeting their guests as they trickled in. If anyone noticed that Harm and Mac were sitting cozy close and that they couldn’t stop touching each other, they didn’t let on. The good natured conversation flowed comfortably among the friends and then Creswell’s comment about taking his Petty Officer brought the evening to a head.
Harm’s statement about ‘if’ Mac went to San Diego was possessive, but instead of upsetting her as she would have expected it too, Mac felt flooded with warmth in his obvious claim of her. He stood up and pulled her up into his arms. For the first time in public he claimed her as his and she melted against him.
Jennifer Coates remembered hearing General Creswell’s comments about whether or not separating them would give Mac a chance at happiness. This certainly wasn’t what she had thought when she had assured the General it was her best shot. She had thought that they would both move on, but now, she realized that she had been wrong. Pending separation just forced Harm to speak his mind.
As Bud Roberts flipped the coin they all watched in amazement and wondered who would be giving up a chance of a live time.
If anyone had bothered to check, whenever Mac had called tails over the years she had lost the bet to Harm. But no one thought about that...or had they? General Creswell’s hand shot out then and grabbed the coin.
PART 8
“Wait a minute...I had a feeling something like this would happen...well not the coin toss but that you two would figure things out.”
“General?”
“Look, ultimately it is you decision of course, but I hate to lose a good officer. Harm, this is too good an opportunity for you to pass up.”
“I agree General,” Mac said as she looked up at Harm’s astonished face.
“Now hold on Mac...I happen to know there is another billet that might work for you and you wouldn’t have to give up your career completely. There is one draw back.”
“And that is?”
“Well two drawbacks...you’ll still have to go to San Diego for about three months to get the new program off the ground, but by September there is another billet opening in London but it would mean moving away from a legal career, at least temporarily.”
“What is it sir?”
“You would be attached to the Pentagon but based in London helping to review intelligence information and deciding on the priority alerts. Your legal background will be helpful as will your ability with languages and codes. I know the commanding officer and he has had you in mind for that billet, but I’m afraid I insisted that I get your services until then. Oh and it’s a Full Colonel billet, so you won’t have to worry about your husband pulling rank on you for long. What do you say? Is it worth a try?”
Mac and Harm engaged in one of their silent conversations before Mac turned to the General and said, “ I think its worth a shot. Thank you sir.”
“Captain Rabb?” asked Creswell.
“I’m not crazy about the next three months, but its better then waiting another decade. Mac, you’d still be giving up something important to you...being a lawyer.”
“Yes, but he said those skills will still be useful.”
“They will...and we might even be able to work out something so you’re TAD to me once in awhile to keep your hand in it. Although you’ll have to wear a line officers insignia instead of the JAG insignia.” Creswell said sweetening the pot even more.
“Thank you General Creswell. I’ll accept your offer...and Harm...if you still want me even though I’m not giving up my Marine Corps career, I’ll marry you.”
“Drinks are on me!” Harm called before he pulled Mac into a kiss that curled her toes and made their friends blush.
They had finished their second drink, when Mac turned to Sturgis. “If you want to share my secret now, its okay.”
“I don’t have to fear bodily injury if I do?”
“Not from me.”
“Good. I’ll sleep better at night knowing that.” Sturgis chuckled. While he was jealous of Harm regarding his career, he had seen first hand how Harm had handled things when left in charge despite his world in shambles not knowing what was happening with Mattie. He had earned a new respect for Harm and had been sincere when he wished Harm well with his new billet.
“So are you going to let me in on this secret...I am her fiancé after all,” Harm reminded him.
“Go ahead Sturgis...just tell the whole story...” Mac encouraged him knowing this would mean a lot to Harm.
“Well, not long after I first came to JAG, I was working this case with Mac, and she started getting this visions. Before long the visions were taking over the case...anyway, Harm was on a carrier and I called him and asked him how to deal with Mac and her visions. He told me that she had saved his life with them and that I should let her go with them.”
“I remember that.”
“Yes well, I was still trying to figure out how to deal with the atmosphere at JAG. This was all new to me, but the amazing thing was, it worked. Anyway, I knew something was up between these two and I kept pressing one then the other to figure out what was going on. I corner Mac in her office and asked her. She denied there was anything between them but when I suggested she get over it then and moved on, she blurted out, ‘I’m in love with him!’ Of course, then she swore me to secrecy and threatened me if I ever let it slip.”
“Since then?” Harm asked Mac as he gazed into her eyes.
“Even longer then that.”
“Sturgis thank you for keeping her confidence, although it might have saved us some years and heartache if you hadn’t, but also thank you for telling it now.”
“Your welcome.”
“Harm...Mac...my office at zero eight hundred tomorrow for final orders. Thanks for the drinks. Good night.” General Creswell excused himself as he headed home.
Sturgis and Jennifer both congratulated them again and then made their way out the door.
Bud and Harriet were a little more sentimental saying good-night. Harm wouldn’t let them say good-bye reminding them they would see each other soon for a wedding and there would be some weekend visits when Harm and Mac would fly in to DC to spend time with Mattie and each other before they all moved to London.
“Its getting late,” Harm said as they walked out to their cars together and waved Harriet and Bud off.
“Yes, but you promised a night of letting me show you how much I love you.”
“I did, didn’t I...and I don’t break promises. Are you following me or am I following you?” Harm asked stealing another quick kiss. He wasn’t sure he would ever get enough of this woman.
“I’ll follow you.”
“I love you Mac.”
By the time they had parked and secured their vehicles, they were arm in arm going into the elevator. The ride to the upper floor was quiet accept for the moans of pleasure as Harm kissed and caressed his future bride.
Some how they managed to get into the apartment and get the door shut before the clothes started coming off. Despite their passion, their military training had them taking care of Harm’s uniform before they gave each other their full attention. Mac had waited too long to touch Harm’s chest which had tempted her for years, since she had seen him parading around in his boxers the first night they thought he might be in danger of being killed by Palmer.
First she rubbed her thumbs over his nipples, and then used her fingernails to delicately rough up that silky patch of hair across his chest. Her tongue repeated everything her hands had done and she heard him gasp her name.
“Mac...Sarah...please,” Harm begged trying to lift her face to his once again to share a kiss.
“You hardly ever call me Sarah.”
“You told me your friends called you Mac.”
“I know...but I like the way you say Sarah too.”
“When you’re all dressed up like tonight, you’re Sarah to me...and when you’re in uniform or we’re running, you’re my buddy Mac.”
“I like that concept.”
“I like you.”
“Feelings mutual.”
“I love you.”
“That feeling is mutual too.”
“I can’t believe you’ve loved me that long.”
“When did you first know you loved me?”
“For sure...that night on the porch when I couldn’t stop kissing you. And you?”
“Do you remember the time you thought you were seeing your father and you came to me instead of Jordan?”
“Yeah?”
“I had decided that I was in love with you around then. Chloe kept saying it and one day I realized she was right...but you only saw me as your pal...your friend...the girl next door.”
“And I thought you were having PMS,” Harm admitted.
“Jerk!” she laughed as she lightly punched him. Suddenly quiet she looked at him with all the passion she had kept hidden for so many years as she demanded, “Make me yours.”
“With pleasure.”
Their heated kisses and seeking hands brought them both to a fever pitch in a short time. Harm, fearing that he would come too soon before he could make it good for her, tried to slow things down. However, the passionate woman in his arms and in his bed, had other ideas. Each time he tried to slow them down, she would touch him in some new way that would inflame him again. It wasn’t long before he knew that he couldn’t hold out much longer. It had been too long since he had enjoyed an intimate relationship. Not even he could believe that he had gone this long considering there had been opportunities offered to him. But none of them had been the woman in his arms now. He had waited for her and would have waited longer for her, but he thanked the fates he didn’t need to.
Harm entered Mac for the first time having already agreed not to use a condom. In that moment, when he was buried deep inside her, her legs wrapped around him, their eyes locked they both knew without any reservations that this was their destination. Harm held off as long as he could to make things as good as he could for Mac, but it wasn’t long before he felt his release powerfully rippling through his body. He tried to move to one side before he collapsed, but they way she held onto him didn’t allow him much room.
“I’m sorry that was so quick. Give me a little time to recuperate and I’ll do much better next time...I promise,” Harm whispered as he dropped kisses along her hairline, hoping she wasn’t too disappointed. Harm heard her quiet words, just before he felt her body totally relax against him.
“I don’t think I could survive better.”
Harm looked down at her beautiful face and saw that she had fallen asleep. He smiled and decided that she must have been satisfied a little. Amused to think he might have messed up her internal clock after all, he reached across her to set the alarm clock. He hated the idea that this could be their one and only time before they had to leave for their new posts, so he gave them time in the morning. He didn’t think Mac would object.
He need not have worried about giving them extra time in the morning, because Mac slept only for a couple of hours before she woke up. She knew immediately where she was and smiled as she watched him sleep next to her. She had done that before, but this time, she did what she had always wanted to. Mac reached out her hand to touch his face and then scooted closer as she let her hand wander to his neck, his chest, his abdomen...the covers rested low across his hips. She used her foot to caress his legs. In the process she brought her knee toward his groin, and brushed something else. She grinned. It seemed like her sailor had recovered in his sleep and was responding to her wandering hands.
She leaned closer to him, pushing him completely onto his back. She grinned at the tent that appeared. She wanted to look at him...all of him, so she lifted the covers. She had glimpsed him naked and aroused last night, but now she could appreciate all he offered. No wonder she had seen evidence of this at times even when he was fully dressed. A package like this would be difficult to conceal. Deciding to kiss him awake she licked her lips and then his.
“Mmmm...this is a nice way to wake up.”
“It was a nice way to go to sleep too.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t last long.”
“Long enough...”
“Good...Let me show you I can do better,” Harm managed to get out between kisses.
“No need...besides...I get a turn on top.”
“Okay.”
Harm reached out to caress her breasts as she straddled his hips, trapping his erection between their bodies. His hands moved from her breasts to her tiny waist, before settling on her hips.
“Let me help you,” he murmured as he urged her to lift her hips and take him inside her. She was tight around him as she settled on his hips, with him buried to the hilt inside her.
“You okay.”
“Oh yeah...” Mac licked her lips and raised her hands over her head thrusting her breasts toward him as she tilted her pelvis and began to rotate against him. “Touch me Harm,” she begged.
He lifted his torso to reach the enlarged nipples with his mouth. He kept his hands at her hips to help her lift herself when she was ready.
When his mouth closed over her breast, and his tongue began to circle her nipple the way her body was circling his erection, Mac heard herself whimper. Their pace increased and she felt one of Harms hands slip between their bodies, to better stimulate her sensitive nub hidden in the moist folds of her body. Harm could feel her tightening around him and knew she was close. He hoped he could hold off his pleasure this time. The feelings were so intense that he wasn’t sure he could. He focused all his efforts on making Mac feel good. He watched her face in the dim light and heard her call his name as she peaked and then exploded around him. She collapsed on his chest, and he rolled her over while still inside her as he continued to kiss and caress her as they lay on their sides face to face.
His hand ran up and down her top leg. He guided her leg over his hip bring her closer and giving him a little different angle as he began to thrust his hips forward once again. No one had ever made love to her from his position and she was pleased to find that she liked it. No one was on top, they shared in the thrusts. In order for his thrusts to be effective, she needed to match him. She should have known that Harm would have a solution. This new position allowed them so much more freedom and it was quickly becoming Mac’s favorite. She could feel him tighten deep inside her and realized that she was close to reaching another orgasm as well.
This time their mingled voices rented the air as they again found their release. Laying sated once again they slept wrapped in each others arms until the alarm clock went off.
“Please don’t let this be sad,” Mac whispered against Harm’s lips as he kissed her with desperation, dreading that he would need to say good-bye soon.
Understanding what she wanted, and knowing she was right, Harm reached inside himself determined to make this love making session hot, sweet, and something she would think about when she thought of him. Something she would look forward to repeating when they were together.
Harm started by kissing his way down her body to her feet, and then back up until he gave her the most intimate kiss of all. With his mouth he licked and sucked her imitating the thrusts they had shared before during the night. With his thumb against her nub, she cried out her released, while his mouth loved her.
As soon as he heard her cry out her release, he flipped her body over, and lifted her hips with one arm around her hips for support, he brought himself up to his knees, and placed a hand on her back. He felt her begin to tense and he whispered soothing words. She trusted him not to hurt her and relaxed. Harm then entered her from behind, pulling her hips tight against him. He reached even deeper and him quick hard thrusts, she cried out yet another release.
Harms erection still standing tall and proud, and coated with her essence was then treated to Sarah Mackenzie’s ministrations. Somewhere between one position and another, she understood what Harm was trying to do. She wanted to give him something to think about too. She moved him so that he now stood on the floor next to the bed. Mac sat on the bed facing him, and while her hands supported the weight below his masterful erection, her mouth leaned forward to taste her own essence on him.
She smiled as she took him in her mouth and played him like a mouth instrument. Her fingers and tongue found and tickled ever nerve ending. She knew when his knees buckled that he was close, but somehow, he held her off and convinced her without words to let this last time be slow and tender. Their love making wasn’t sad, but it was slow, measured and intense. It brought tears of overwhelming love to both their eyes as they reached the peak once more together.
They had everything with them to get dressed and to get their final orders in the morning at JAG. They had arranged a few extra hours in order to go tell Mattie their news in person and to check in with Children’s Services to updated the adoption paperwork to include Mac.
Once sated, they kissed sweetly and declared their love for one another before starting their morning routine. Harm showered while Mac found her legs again, and then he dressed and prepared breakfast while she showered and dressed. Together they got the last of his things packed up and looked around the loft knowing they wouldn’t be back here for a long, long time...if ever. Harm was putting the loft up for sale. If they were to return, they would need a house. They had acquired so many memories here in this place, but those memories would go with them now where ever they were. They didn’t need the loft for that anymore. They had grown beyond it.
Uniforms in place, they drove to JAG one last time and walked into Headquarters together. Protocol of the office and years of training and routine helped them keep themselves together.
Captain Rabb entered the bullpen for the first time. Everyone smiled seeing the four stripes on his shoulder boards. He had worn his Captain’s cover for the first time this morning and that was now tucked under his arm as Petty Officer Jennifer Coates announced them to the General.
They soon discovered that General Creswell had been busy since leaving McMurphy’s the previous night. He had pulled some strings and arranged for the Virginia judge to hear their custody and adoption request at zero nine hundred. Creswell had also ordered Jennifer Coates to change their flights to the following morning, giving them a full twenty four hours extra. Harm’s things were being shipped today, so they would stay at Mac’s apartment tonight, which wouldn’t be packed and moved until the following day. But first they had other matters to take care of.
“You have your final request for staff?”
“Yes sir.” They both handed him the list.
“I don’t see Petty Officer Coates on here Colonel Mackenzie. I thought she would be going with you. Did you change your mind?”
“In a way sir. I would prefer to have Petty Officer Coates join me in London as my assistant when I take on my role there. We thought it was important that we have someone close enough to Mattie to be our eyes and ears here until she is well enough to travel.”
“I see.”
“We will explain this to Petty Officer Coates when we are done here sir.”
“I am honored to have served with you both and trust that we will not lose touch.”
“Aye, aye sir.”
“Yes sir.”
“And I hope to received either an invitation to the wedding or a wedding announcement if you decide to elope or something.”
“Understood sir. Permission to speak freely sir?” asked Mac.
“Granted. Thank you for the little extras you’ve done for us sir. We owe you a lot.”
“So you’re not going to hold it against me that I tried sending you far away from each other?”
“No sir.”
“Good. I’ll tell my wife her advice worked.”
“Sir?” Harm couldn’t believe his ears.
“I told my wife that Admiral Chegwidden had kept you here together all those years hoping you could work things out and it hadn’t happened. She reminded me that in the same way opposites attract, if one method doesn’t work, flip it around and try the opposite.”
“So you sent us in opposite directions...”
“And it worked.”
“And why is that I might ask?” General Creswell looked at these two people in front of him.
“I needed a deadline sir.”
“Then I’m glad I gave you one. I’ll have Jennifer cut the orders for these people and get them to their new duty stations. Colonel Mackenzie, if you have an ideas of someone that could take over for you in San Diego, let me know.”
“Aye, aye sir. I think that two of my people may be ready to step up and take command in a few months. I’d like to promote from within if possible.”
“Understood. Dismissed.”
Harm followed Mac out of Creswell’s office. They stopped at Jennifer’s desk.
“Petty Officer Coates.”
“Yes Ma’am.”
“I did not add you to the list of my staff coming to San Diego with me. As you know, that assignment will be temporary. I have another assignment for you and hope you are agreeable. As you know, with both of us leaving, someone needs to be here for Mattie.”
“Yes Ma’am.”
“So I have asked the General if I could wait and claim you when I transition to my new position in London. Are you agreeable to this?”
“Yes Ma’am!” Jennifer’s smile couldn’t disguise her pleasure. She would be with her family once again in a new place.
“Does Mattie know your news yet?”
“No. We have to go to court soon and then we are going to go see her and tell her in person.” Harm explained the plan.
“Good luck sir. Ma’am.”
“Take care of things for us and we’ll talk soon.” Mac assured the young woman.
PART 9
They dropped Harm’s car off at the Navy Yard where it would be shipped to London for him. Harm declined the ride they offered, and climbed into Mac’s car after putting his bags in the back with hers. They arrived at the court house at exactly nine and were ushered in to the judge immediately.
“Congratulation Captain Rabb. Now I understand that your circumstances have changed and you wish to submit amended papers.”
“Yes Ma’am. This is Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie, my fiancé. The amended papers list her as the adoptive mother. In addition we are requesting that the court issue an emergency decree granting her joint custody of Mathilda Grace Johnson.”
“What is the emergency?”
“Both of us are being reassigned to new billets. I will be out of the country, while Colonel Mackenzie will be in the United States. It will be easier for her to get here quickly if there is a problem. We hope that Mattie will be able to travel to London by the time we marry and Colonel Mackenzie also is sent to London on her new billet.”
“I see. And who will be here for Mattie now?”
“Mattie is in the hospital recovering from injuries sustained in an accident. She is in favor of these arrangements, your honor.”
“And Tom Johnson?”
“As you know he had stepped down from Mattie care once again.”
“He needs to come forward to relinquish custody for the adoption to proceed. IF you can get his signature on the required form and have it notarized I will move on the adoption immediately. I feel you have both proven you are willing and able to put the best interest of the child first. Until we have those signatures, I will approve the request for joint legal custody.”
“Thank you.”
Harm and Mac decided to stop at her apartment and change into civilian clothes before going to see Mattie. They knew she would be disappointed not seeing Harm’s Captain’s bars, so before they changed, Mac took pictures of Harm in uniform so Mattie could at least have that. They also took some pictures of themselves together so she could have them together with her. In one shot they were kissing, in another Mac rested her head against Harm’s chest where she could hear his heart beat beneath her ear. In another they were side by side holding hands and smiling into the camera. Mac had not packed her printer yet, so she printed off multiple copies of the pictures they took before they headed to see Mattie.
Hand in hand they returned to her car and Mac handed Harm the keys. He grinned and took them from her. They started on the trip to Blacksburg, their hands clasped between them. Mac shot him a confused look when he pulled into the parking lot of a shopping mall.
“What are you doing?”
“I thought we should pick out an engagement ring.”
“Oh...You don’t have to.”
“Mac, I want to. Besides, Mattie won’t leave me alone if I don’t get you one. I’d rather we do it together. You’ll never have another so I want it to be exactly what you want.”
“Thank you.”
“Look, I looked for one and I saw all the different styles and colors and knew there was no way I could do it right without your input. So you game?”
“Let’s go Sailor.”
Hand in hand they walked into the mall and to a large jewelry store.
“May I help you sir?” asked the sales woman.
“Yes. We’d like to look at engagement rings and wedding bands.”
“Harm!”
“And reason why not, Sarah?”
“No...no reason at all. You just surprised me.”
“I like surprising you if it means you’ll smile like that.” Harm leaned toward her to steal a quick kiss.
“Excuse me, but could you give me an idea of what you have in mind?”
“I’d like something not too big, and with a low setting. High settings get caught on everything,” Mac explained. “I think I prefer gold too.” Mic’s ring had been platinum. It always seemed cold to her.
“Do you have a stone preference?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Thank you Harm for letting us do this together.”
“You’re welcome. So far I think I would have done okay on my own because you haven’t thrown me a curve ball, but wait until you see the tray they bring you to look at.”
“Bring us,” Mac corrected with a smile as she leaned against him. “Do you have a preference to the stone I wear?”
“No...I assumed you would want a diamond.”
“I’m not sure about that...I’ve got an idea...oh wow!” Mac spotted the rings. Her eyes immediately picked out a set that was unusual but exactly what she had in mind. “Could I see that one?” she asked pointing to ring set with three larger stones across it with tiny diamond chips separating them. The two larger outer stones were sort of white with flecks of red, gold, and green in it when you looked at it closely. The center stone was a red heart.
“What are the stones?” Mac asked.
“The red heart is a ruby which is flanked with two diamond oval shaped opals. The tiny stones in the diamond cutting are diamond chips. Would you like to try it on?”
“Harm?”
“Go ahead.”
The sales woman handed Harm the rings which parted in his hand. He looked at her quizzically. “It’s a set. Put the engagement ring on her hand first.”
Harm did that to discover that the engagement ring was the heart shaped ruby with the diamond chips next to it. It slipped onto Mac hand without a problem.
“Now slide the wedding band on for the full effect.”
Harm took the second ring which was beautiful on its own and slid the gold band with the inset opals into place. The point of the heart settled between the two opals and completed the picture. Harm kissed her hand. He knew before looking at her face or hearing her decision that this was meant for her.
“Harm its beautiful.”
“I know.” Harm turned to the sale woman, “I think we’ll take it. Sarah?”
“Thank you...you do realize these are our birth stones, don’t you?”
“Yes, now you mention it.”
“What size ring do you wear sir?” the woman asked Harm. He told her and she brought forth two wedding bands. “Which do you prefer?”
She presented two wedding bands, one in a plain gold and the other with an opal inset on the face. He saw Mac’s face light up and knew that it mattered to her that there be a visible connection. He picked up the wedding band with the opal inset and held it and his left hand toward her. She slid the band on his hand only to discover that it fit him perfectly as well.
“I guess this is the one.”
They gave her back the wedding bands from the sets, but Mac didn’t want to remove the engagement ring. She had transferred her class ring to her ring hand and now the ruby engagement ring glowed with the fire and passionate that the woman and man buying it shared.
Harm knew his credit card was about to take a hit, but he didn’t care. Before the saleswoman rang up his purchase, he spotted a necklace for Mattie.
“Mac...I was thinking we should probably take Mattie a little something to mark this event too. Look at this and tell me what you think.” He showed her a heart shaped pendant with an opal stone in it. “It’s Mattie’s birth stone too,” he gave her for an explanation.
“Let me buy it for her Harm.”
He nodded. So they each made a purchase and started for the car. Harm stopped once again and pointed to another store. “You told me once that you wanted a great career and good man and lots of comfortable shoes...let me buy you a pair of comfortable shoes, Mac.”
“Harm,” Mac started to protest.
“Please?”
Mac gave in and found a pair of strappy clear sandals that arched her foot the way she liked showing her legs to advantage. She had shoes from the same company and knew how comfortable they were for work or dancing. The clear straps seemed to make the shoes disappear on her feet leaving her feet looking barefoot. Suddenly the phrase ‘barefoot and pregnant’ came to mind and she knew that dream was still alive. She stood up and walked around in the shoes before nodding to Harm with a big smile. He couldn’t resist her when she smiled like that. Stealing another kiss he paid for the shoes before escorting her back to the car. Once on I-81, they made good time. Getting to Blacksburg. Mac kept looking at her new ring as Harm drove. They talked about lots of things on the way as well.
“Thank you for today Harm.”
“I think we need to thank General Creswell for arranging things so we could have today.”
“I know...although he owed me. He had me talk to his daughter Cammie. She was thinking of giving up Annapolis because she didn’t think she could have everything she wanted in the military,” Mac told him.
“And what brought that on?”
“I think she’s in love. She said her mother knew as soon as she met her father and she asked me if I had ever been in love that way. I told her no...but when we met I knew there was something there...I just didn’t realize it was love at that point.”
“I know. But we know now.” Harm flashed her a smile and squeezed her hand which he hand captured in his once again, his finger playing with the new ring on her hand. “Tell me what you’re thinking about for our wedding.”
“I haven’t had time to give it a lot of specific thought...but I had assumed you would want to get married at Annapolis.”
“It would be nice but its not necessary. I think the Chapel of the Seas had more meaning for both of us, wouldn’t you agree?”
“Yes, but...”
“Mac, this needs to feel right for both of us, but especially you.”
“Why me more then you?”
“That didn’t come out the way I meant it. I meant I will be happy with what makes you happy. If it means something to you, then I will be happy.”
“Are you sure?”
“I trust you.”
“I know. But are you sure that my decisions will make you happy?”
“What’s your point counselor?”
“I mean, you said my decisions will make you happy but my decision to marry Mic, didn’t make you happy anymore then my decision to have a fling with Clay made you happy.”
“Point taken...let me amend my statement. Any decision regarding the location, color scheme, traditions, and so on for our wedding will make me happy...as long as you and I are getting married.”
“Much better. That I can live with.”
“Mac, I think we have to stop revisiting the past as we plan our future.”
“I don’t.”
“Tell me why.”
“Because there are so many good memories and it makes us value now even more.”
“I stand corrected.”
“Harm?”
“Yes.”
“I love you...I don’t think I could have let you go to London without you knowing even if I hadn’t remembered you telling me I needed to come to you when I was ready.”
“I’m glad. Are you really okay about putting your legal profession on the back burner?”
“Yes. What Creswell has proposed is a challenging opportunity to use other skills I have. Besides, we both know the higher up the chain we go the more administrative our duties become and the further from the courtroom we find ourselves.”
“I feel better about that.”
“Besides Harm, this will give me more time and energy to focus on our family.”
“I suggest we give it a year to let nature take its course and then we start looking into helpful medical interventions. Can you live with that?”
“Yes...one year from now, or one year from our wedding?”
“From now.”
Mac settled her head on his shoulder as he drove down I-81. They were both relaxed and happy and looking forward to telling Mattie their news. One or the other would offer ideas about the wedding.
“Harm, I think I know how we can pull this wedding off given our time frame. We ask Harriet to be our wedding planner. What do you think?”
“Brilliant idea! Harriet will love it I’m sure. Do you think she’ll let us hire her?”
“I doubt it, but I’ll ask.”
“If not, what would you think of giving each of their children a savings bond as a token of our appreciation?”
“You are the brilliant one this time.”
“Do you want to eat before we go see Mattie?”
“No...I can’t wait to see her,” Mac informed him as he pulled into the hospital parking lot.
Hand in hand they stood in the door way of her room and quietly watched her. She was turned away from the door, staring at the phone as if she was waiting for it to ring. Harm nudged Mac before he spoke.
“You wondering if I disappeared without calling you?”
“Harm! Mac?” Mattie smiled at Harm’s voice and then looked at the two of them. “What’s going on?”
“Sorry I didn’t call but a lot had happened. We decided to come see you in person. That okay?”
“Yeah...Hi Mac.”
“Mattie...you are definitely looking better then the last time I saw you.”
“Thanks. I thought you would come in your uniform so I could see you Captain’s bars.”
“I brought pictures for you Mattie,” Mac offered.
“I see.”
“Harm, I’m going to go use the ladies room. I’ll be back in a few minutes.” Mac squeezed Harm’s hand and then left him to talk to Mattie alone.
“What’s wrong Mattie?”
“Nothing.”
“Mattie, this is me. Let me in.”
“I thought...”her voice broke and tears trickled down her face and she couldn’t get the tears out.
Harm took her hand and held it in his as he compelled her to meet his gaze. “Mattie I’m sorry if you thought I left without calling. So much has happened since we talked yesterday...I’m not sure where to begin. The General got us twenty-four hours more before we have to leave, so we decided to come in person.” He brushed her tears away with his thumb and watched her compose herself again.
“You and Mac?”
“Among other things. We were able to see the judge this morning and we have joint custody now. Later we’re going to try and find Tom and ask him to sign the form that will allow us to adopt you. Is that still okay?”
“Yes. I’m sorry I’m being such a baby.”
“Mattie its natural when you’re cooped up in the hospital to get down and feel left out. I should have called and then just shown up to surprise you.”
“Its okay. Why aren’t you in uniform though?” We changed so we could be more relaxed today. In uniform we have to follow military protocol and we needed more freedom then that allowed.”
“Why?”
“Guess,” Harm teased.
“You worked things out?”
“We did,” Mac answered from the doorway. “You okay with this?”
Mattie spotted Mac’s new ring when she rested her left arm on Harm’s shoulder. He reached up to hold her hand and Mattie’s face lit up.
“You’re engaged?”
“Yes.”
“Let me see the ring.”
Harm watched as the two females in his life discussed the ring Mac wore. He then realized that he hadn’t told his mother his news either. Deciding that Mattie would be delighted to hear this exchange, he put the phone on speaker and called his mother.
“Harm, who are you calling?” Mac asked.
“You’ll see...” They waited until they heard a woman’s voice answer.
“Burnett Galleries. May I help you?”
“Hey Mom,” Harm spoke into the phone.
“Harmon, how are you?”
“I’m wonderful.”
“Things looking better for Mattie?”
“Yes....she’s hear with me now. I have you on speaker phone.”
“Hello Mattie.”
“Hi Mrs. Burnett.”
“Mom, Mac’s with us too.”
“Mac?”
“Hello Mrs. Burnett.”
“Trish, please.”
“Mother, I’ve got a lot to tell you so sit down and listen okay?”
“I’m sitting.”
“First, I made Captain and I’m on my way to London to take a command post.”
“Congratulations son, I know how much you’ve wanted this.”
“Yes Ma’am...but I was prepared to give it up at one point last night.”
“Why?”
“I thought the only way Mac and I could be together was if one of us gave up our military career.”
“And?”
“We were going to flip a coin to solve the problem, but General Creswell stepped in. Mac’s going to be going to San Diego to start a new program, but will turn the reins over to someone else in about three months when she gets her promotion. Then, she’s accepting a billet in London working with the pentagons program for determining world alerts. Mac speaks several languages and has both investigative and legal backgrounds. It’s a great position even though she won’t be in a courtroom much.”
“Well that sounds wonderful son, but what does this mean?”
Harm winked at Mac and Mattie. “It means Mom, that we’re getting married, adopting Mattie and then going to try and give you a few more grandchildren.”
“Oh! That’s sounds much better. And Mac, forget calling me Trish...call me Mom, like Harm does. As for you Mattie, no more Mrs. Burnett - its Grandma. I am so happy for you Harm. When’s the wedding?”
“Dates not set in stone yet, but it will probably be in August. You’ll be able to talk Mac’s ear off about the plans as she’ll be in San Diego for the next three months starting tomorrow.”
“Mac, do you want us to meet you at the airport?”
“That’s not necessary, but thank you. I will call you as soon as I get settled in my quarters.”
“Very well. Harm, you take care of yourself in London.”
“I will. Talk to you soon , Mom. I love you.”
“Love you too son.”
Harm looked at Mac and Mattie looking at him, tears in their eyes. “No water works ladies....please. A man can only take so much.”
PART 10
They burst out laughing then and relaxed for a nice visit. They looked at the pictures and Mattie admitted Harm looked good as a Captain. She was thrilled with the pictures of them together. It was while they were looking at the pictures, that Mattie had another break through. For the first time she moved her hand all by herself and Mac spotted it.
“Harm look...at Mattie’s hand.” Tears once again threatened as Mattie was able to hold the picture herself and bring it up toward her face to look at it. Harm and Mac held hands thrilled with this new step forward. As much as they didn’t want to leave, they knew Mattie was getting tired.
“Mattie, we’re going to go so you can get some rest...but we’ll stop later to check on you before we head back to the city. Remember this isn’t good-bye.”
“I know...okay...I guess I am tired.”
Mattie was asleep before they had gotten out of the room.
“Let’s go eat and then try and find Tom.”
“Counter proposal...lets find Tom first. I want to get that over with if you don’t mind,” Mac informed Harm.
“Perfect.”
“Harm, we didn’t give Mattie the necklace.”
“We will when we go back...after Tom signs the papers.”
They found him at home, hung over, but not drunk yet, although he had just poured a glass and was ready to take a drink. Harm got straight to the point.
“Tom the last time we spoke you said you couldn’t handle the situation with Mattie. Are you prepared to relinquish your parental rights so that Mac and I can adopt her and give her the stability she requires?”
“Yes...I won’t stand in your way Commander.”
“Its Captain now, but thank you. Tom, we’ll never prohibit Mattie from spending time with you. You will always be her biological father.”
“I know that Captain...but I don’t know that I will ever be ready or able to have her in my life again. I think its best for her if I just disappear.”
“Tom, I know you are desperate to get your hands on that glass you poured, but could you come with us now to get your signature notarized on this form.”
“I’ll do it.”
“Good. Put your shoes on and lets go.”
While Tom Johnson got ready, Mac suggested to Harm, “Go with him in the truck. I’ll follow you there.”
“Works for me.”
Once at the local child services office, Tom completed and signed all required paperwork with a steady hand and calm voice. The staff there agreed to fax the paperwork to the judge. Tom shook hands with Harm and Mac and promised to pack up Mattie’s things to ship to Harm in London or store for her locally before he walked out of their lives. The way he walked away left Harm and Mac feeling sad for the man and hoping he would be able to reclaim his life for himself at some point.
They ate a meal and decided that after another short visit to Mattie they would head back to Washington DC and speak to Harriet about being their wedding planner. Then they would go to Mac’s place and spend one more night together showing each other how much they were loved before they would have to walk away from each other for three months.
Harm showed Mattie their copies of the paperwork Tom had signed. “It’s just a formality now, Mattie, and then you will be an official part of our family.”
“We got you something to mark the occasion.”
“Really?” Mattie was more alert since her nap and enjoyed using her now mobile left hand.
“I hope you like it,” Mac told her as she handed her the open box displaying the necklace.
“It’s like the stone in your ring...my birth stone.”
“Yes...and Harm’s. You want to put it on?”
“Not yet...with my collar it won’t really fit.”
“I’m sorry Mattie, I didn’t even give that a thought.”
“It’s okay. The nurse said that they are going to let me take it off a little each day. I can look at it in the box for now, and then wear it for the wedding.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
“Harm...Mac...I don’t want you to go,” Mattie admitted as tears came to her eyes.
Harm tried to hold her as best he could without hurting her, and Mac stood close rubbing Harm’s back and Mattie’s shoulder trying to console them both while they tears fell. Her tears quietly flowed as well. They stayed together until Mattie cried herself to sleep. After kissing her forehead and brushing away his own tears, Harm held on to Mac before quietly leading her from the hospital.
“You okay?”
“Yeah...Thanks...Mac, can you drive?” harm asked.
“Sure.” She slid behind the wheel and started the car. They drove in silence for awhile, but by the time they were on I-81, they had regained their composure. Harm offered to take over the driving but Mac said she was fine, so he sat back and enjoyed watching his fiancé instead. He may have nine years of memories with Mac, but only a few hours of memories with Sarah Mackenzie, his fiancé.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” Mac finally asked with a giggle.
“Just memorizing how you look wearing my ring.”
“Oh...we can take a picture if you’d like.”
“I’d like.”
“I promise will do more pictures when we get back to my place...for every picture you want I get my choice, remember.”
They stopped by to see Harriet and Bud and the children on their way to Mac’s place, delighting and surprising their friends.
“So Harriet, how do you feel about being a wedding planner?” Mac asked her friend.
“Really?”
“Yes. We want to get married in August at the Chapel of the Seas.”
“It’s not very big,” Harriet cautioned.
“I know. I’ve never wanted a huge wedding,” Mac admitted.
“August is awfully hot,” Harriet reminded them.
“Won’t have to wear as many clothes then,” Mac grinned, “but I do want him in dress whites.”
“So are you finally going to admit it.” Harm countered with the long standing joke between them.
“I suppose I might as well,” she agreed. “So will you do this for us Harriet?”
“We’ll pay you,” offered Harm.
“Stop....I will do this, but you will not pay me for it.”
“Are you sure?” Mac asked.
“Yes. Do I get to be your Matron of Honor?”
“Yes,” Mac agreed.
“Bud, will you serve as my best man?”
“I’d be honored sir.”
“Good. We’ll talk often, so if you’ll excuse us, I’d like to have some time alone with my fiancé.”
“Understood, sir..Harm.”
“Much better Bud. Can’t have my best man calling me sir when I’m off duty.”
They were able to leave the Roberts with everyone smiling thinking about the wedding, more then their imminent departure. The time for words was about to end, and the time for letting one self go and feeling was about to commence.
Hand in hand with their bags they returned to Mac’s apartment. Together they packed a few more things. They took pictures of one another and printed them out, including one of Mac’s hand sporting her new ring. They printed out pictures of Mattie and then packed up the printer. Finally they gave in to the desire simmering between them. They made love slow and unhurried as Harm had wanted to the night before. He admitted to Mac that it had been the first time since he had been with Renee. She almost didn’t believe him until she realized his level of endurance and compared it to what had transpired the previous night. She knew then, without a doubt that he had been telling her the truth. They slept very little, but loved a lot trying to make up for nine years in nine hours.
Both had vowed not to get down as they prepared for travel and work the next morning. Harm had arranged for a driver deciding it would be easier to say good bye at the apartment then in a uniform in public. Mac didn’t swear at him this time for letting her be the only one crying. Instead they laughed as they tried to dry each others tears and make each other presentable for public. Harm heard the driver tooting his horn.
“I’ve got to go. I love you...I’ll email you every day and talk to you whenever I can.” Harm swooped in for one more kiss and then turned and walked toward his new life.
Mac watched him go. They had managed to understand the gulf that had separated them, and found a way to bridge it. They were a family and if they were lucky, they would be able to add to that family naturally, and if not, they would look at other options.
PART 11
August 20, 2005
Washington D.C.
2000 Local
Mattie sat in the front row on the groom’s side of the chapel with Trish and Frank Burnett. The Creswell’s sat in the front row on the bride’s side leaving room for the man that would walk Sarah Mackenzie down the aisle. The guest list included Jack Keeter, Sturgis Turner and Verese, Jennifer Coates, Gunnery Sargent Victor Galindez, Lt. Jason Tiner, Commander Meg Austin, Commander Katelyn Pike, Annie and Josh Pendry, Mike Roberts, Carolyn Imes, Thomas Boone, Elizabeth “Skates” Hawkes and her new husband as well as several key people in their lives such as Chloe, Tuna, Captain Ingles, and Captain Sebring.
Chaplain Turner waited at the alter as Harm and Bud took their places waiting for the wedding to begin. Both men were dashing in their dress whites. The music began and Harriet proceeded down the aisle dressed in a navy blue sleeveless tea length dress carrying a single red rose tied with a white ribbon. Candlelight flickered around the chapel in the fading daylight on this warm summer evening.
The music changed and the congregation stood, as Sarah Mackenzie in a sleeveless tea length white gown carrying a single rose and appearing to be barefoot made her way down the aisle on the arm of retired Admiral A.J. Chegwidden. The bride and groom’s eyes met and held as she came closer and closer to her husband and their future. She took his breath away.
Chaplain Turner motioned for the crowd to sit as he offered a prayer for the congregation and the couple asking to be united here this evening. Following the prayer, he asked who gave this woman in marriage and the Creswell’s joined Admiral Chegwidden in giving their consent creating the first ripple of humor for the evening. Chaplain Turner then surprised everyone by asking who gave the groom in marriage. Mattie and Trish Burnett responded, “I do,” giving them the second chuckle. Once Mac handed her rose to Harriet, Harm and Sarah’s hands were joined and the real ceremony began.
It was a beautiful traditional ceremony. Mac and Harm could both be heard declaring their love and promising to love, cherish and honor each other until death do them part in clear strong voices indicating that neither had any doubts as to their commitment to the other or to marriage.
After they exchanged rings, Chaplain Turner asked Harriet for the two roses. She handed them to him and with another prayer, he tied the white ribbon around the second rose.
“As these two roses have been bound by a silken ribbon, so have these two lives that first met in a rose garden. Keep these two roses as a symbol of the tie that binds. When things get rough as they will from time to time, take out these two fragile roses and remember they symbolize each of you. Treat each other with the care you each deserve using these roses to remind you of each others fragility and beauty. Although each of you may change you are bound by the silken thread of love. May God Bless you and bring you the family you so desperately want. You may kiss the bride.”
Harm took Mac in his arms then and made sure everyone saw him stake his claim on her with a kiss that steamed the chapel. About the time the Chaplain thought he would need to step in, Harm stood up again and flashed his high wattage smile.
Chaplain Turner then announced, “It is my honor to present Captain and Mrs. Rabb.”
The congregation rose and the music began as Harm and Mac made their way down the aisle. Harm saw a few of the men duck out ahead of them and he suspected what was coming. He debated whether he should warn Mac or not. He decided not to notice and enjoy the moment. They paused in the doorway as an arch suddenly formed before them under the able command of none other then Captain Ingles. It was his blade that swatted Mac as she passed.
Sarah Mackenzie Rabb burst out laughing. In uniform it would have been an insult, but in her wedding dress on the Captain’s arm it felt so right. Harm leaned down to kiss her once again.
“I swear I didn’t know about the arch until I saw it.”
“I know...actually I arrange with Bud and Harriet to surprise you. Captain Ingles was my surprise.” They laughed and were surrounded in the warm twilight by their family and friends. Mattie approach they slowly using her crutches, her braces hidden by her long dress. Trish and Frank Burnett at her side in case she needed more support. This was the first time Harm and Mac were aware she was able to walk outside of her physical therapy program and they both held her in their arms telling her how proud they were of her. Frank and Trish had arranged with Harriet to have the reception at the nearby hotel and conference center. While the guests made their way to the reception, the wedding party and family members stayed back for pictures. When they were done, ten of them settled into the two limos Frank had provided and drove the short distance to the reception.
Harm and Mac had wanted to walk in with Mattie between with them, but Mattie declined wanting this to be about their wedding not about the family. They agreed and entered with Bud and Harriet behind them followed by Frank and Trish, AJ and Mattie, General and Mrs. Creswell. A chair was found for Mattie in case she needed it as they formed the reception line. Harm and Mac were kissed and hugged until they thought they couldn’t take any more touchy feely stuff from well meaning friends. They hadn’t see each other since the morning they parted at Mac’s apartment. Harm had been scheduled to arrive Friday morning but an emergency had prevented him from leaving on time and he had only landed in Washington DC that morning.
Harriet refused to let them see each other on their wedding day until it was time for the ceremony and they were both clamoring for time alone. On the other hand, they wanted to enjoy the celebration so they endured. The sixty guests were soon
seated and the dinner served. Bud, as the Best Man was the first to offer a toast.
“I was there the day these two met. It was evident that something unique and special was about to happen. I remember Admiral Chegwidden cautioning them not to get to close as they needed to work together. It took years before we really truly realized the import of that day and that meeting. Now of course we all know that it was probably the one and only order Admiral Chegwidden issued that they both took to heart and honored.” As everyone laughed, Bud held up his hand so he could continue. “Of course, it took General Creswell shaking things up and trying to separate them before they were able to admit to each other, what so many of us knew...they loved each other and belonged together.” Raising his glass high he continued, “To Harm and Mac...may you enjoy a long life of love, laughter and happiness.”
“Here, here.” Harm raised his glass to salute Bud and then after tasting the sparkling cider, he kissed his wife at his side. The opal inset bands glistened on their left hands in the flickering candlelight.
Retired Admiral Chegwidden stood next. Harm and Mac exchanged a glance knowing they needed to be prepared to expect anything from this man but that it was dished out with love. “ If plans had gone accordingly, a year and a half ago I would have enjoyed my own wedding at Annapolis, but it wasn’t to be. I kept the opening just in case two of my best officers figured things out. I knew they were getting closer but I didn’t know what else to do for them, so I decided to use the facilities for my own retirement party. Many of you were there that night as well. Some of you may remember that when ever there is any kind of gathering in a location with a porch or deck, you would probably find it occupied for at least part if not most of the evening by these two. I can admit now that several of us tried for years to catch them in a clinch or being less then professional in their uniform. No luck.”
The group snickered and Harm and Mac held hands under the table cloth.
“Every time I’d think the situation was resolved and that I could once again have a normal military office, something would happen. Yet through it all there commitment to one another was evident. It took some hits...some really big hits, but given time and space they always, always found there way back to each other.”
Harm put his arm around Mac now and she leaned against him listening to the friend and mentor.
“When I retired last year, I could see that Harm and Mac would be okay somehow. They were there together and I just got a sense that they would be okay. The maturity I had waited for Harm to show was there. The trust that had taken a few hits was back. I felt it was only a matter of time. Then General Creswell arrived on the scene. He waited and like a good leader assessed the situation choosing to apply a lesson from history. He didn’t repeat the things that hadn’t worked he did the exact opposite. You see, I thought if I kept them together long enough they would figure it out. The General relied on reverse psychology...Coates, did you put him up to that?” Everyone laughed as Coates came to attention in civilian attire.
“No sir.”
“I’m surprised...have a seat Petty Officer...anyway General Creswell sends one six hours east and the other five hours west and now we have a wedding.” When the chuckles subsided Chegwidden continued. “You had a chance to escape to natural fibers yourself I understand, so it really truly must be love and what you want, Captain Rabb. To Harm and Mac - best friends and partners for life.”
The cheers and catcalls continued while Harm kissed his wife’s lips again. He needed to get out of here soon. He wanted to be alone with his wife. They finally got through dinner without a lot more toasts, the few that were made were short and sweet and not preceded with lengthy stories. The music started and Harm and Mac took the first dance stopping to collect Mattie at the end as they swayed together on the dance floor as a family. Mattie took her seat again and Harm danced with Trish while Frank danced with Mac. AJ took over for Frank allowing him to claim his wife. Harm finished the dance by taking Harriet onto the floor. He enjoyed watching her blush.
“Harriet, thank you for everything. You helped make this a special day for all of us.”
“It was my pleasure Harm. You know, Bud and I owe you and Mac so much....let me finish. I knew when she was planning the wedding to Mic that her heart wasn’t in it, but I wasn’t sure then exactly why. I knew though when you were missing what the problem was. All I want to say is that I’m glad you found each other. Her heart was certainly into planning this wedding.”
“Thank you again Harriet. You’ve been there for us when no one else would have been.”
“I think that’s a two way street Captain.”
“I better get you back to your husband so I can reclaim my wife. By the way...how long do we have to stay before I can get her alone?”
“Just a little longer. You have to cut the cake. No bouquets or garters are planned so I’d say another half hour.”
“Okay I can survive that. Here you go Bud.”
“Thanks Harm. Shall we give it a try Sweetie?” Bud asked his wife holding out his arm to her. It was a slow song, and they did little more then hold her other and sway but they didn’t care. Harm spotted Mac dancing with Jack Keeter and honed in like a guided missile, whisking her out of Jack’s arms and into his own.
“Hands off, Keeter. It’s my wife your touching you know,” Harm threatened with a grin.
Mac wrapped her arms around her husbands waist and looked up at him with a smile. “He was being a gentleman, Harm.”
“He better be. Thanks for coming Jack.”
“I wouldn’t have missed this one. Be happy you two.”
“We will Jack, thanks.” Harm danced Mac away from the center of the floor as he pleaded with her, “Can we cut the cake and get out of here soon?”
“Yes. After this dance.”
The camera flashed as they cut the cake. Neither took the time to mash cake in the others face. They had a more important goal in mind. Frank’s limo was going to take Harm and Mac to another hotel where their things were waiting for them. They would spend the weekend there and then pick up Mattie for their move to London on Monday.
“Mattie, we’re going to leave soon, but we’ll see you on Monday.”
“I know.”
“There’s something we want to show you before we leave though,” Harm told her as he removed a paper from his pocket and handed it to her. It was dated from this morning. The adoption was final and Mattie was now a Rabb, too.
“Can I use your name too?”
“Do you want to?”
“Yes.”
“I’d like that.” Harm smiled and kissed her cheek. “I get a wife and a daughter in one day...this is my lucky day.”
“Mine too,” Mac piped in.
“Yeah but I get a mother and a father and a new name. Pretty cool,” Mattie grinned.
“You sure you’re okay about us leaving for a couple of days when we just got here?” Mac asked again.
“I don’t really want to watch you slobbering all over each other, so go get it out of your system,” she told them with a smile.
“I won’t ever get her out of my system,” Harm told Mattie as he looked at his wife in his arms.
“Well don’t embarrass me at least,” Mattie scolded them.
“We won’t,” Mac promised as she kissed Mattie’s cheek. “We love you and we’ll all be together as a family soon.”
“See you Monday...Mom and Dad,” Mattie promised with a smile.
“We’ll take good care of her. You two enjoy your brief honeymoon. Did you tell her about the surprise?” Trish asked.
“No...I haven’t told Mac yet either, but I’ll tell her later, and you can tell Mattie for me.” Harm hugged his mother and shook Frank’s hand.
It took them a lot longer to get away from their well wishers then they had counted on, but at last they were alone in the back of the limo on the way to the hotel.
“Are you going to tell me about the surprise?” Mac asked.
“Yes. I’ve arranged to have Mattie join us with a physical therapist to help care for her on a little get-a-way to the Bahamas, where Frank has a place. He offered it and his plane to take us there Monday night. We’ll stay there until Saturday and then Frank’s plane will take us on to England. That will give us Sunday to get settled before we report for duty on Monday.”
“Harm, can we afford a full time therapist to care for Mattie?”
“Yes...that’s the other part of the surprise...You know how we put on the invitations and announcements no gifts please.”
“Yes...Harriet put in a card that said in lieu of gifts, donations can be made to the Mattie Grace Fund that Frank set up to help cover her rehab costs because we couldn’t put her on our insurance until the adoption was final.”
“Right, well Frank called me and said that his company wanted to make a donation and that one of my mother’s artists was having a show and planned to donate half of the proceedings to the fund. Then the Marines heard about it and decided to hold a fund raiser on her behalf so the Navy had to get involved too. Anyway, added to the other gift donations that we got ‘in lieu of gifts’ there was enough to pay her hospital bills, hire a physical therapist for up to one year. There’s more too in case she needs other equipment, tests, operations...what ever. They’ve also deemed that any money she doesn’t use before she recovers, she can use toward the college of her choice.”
“Oh Harm, that’s amazing.”
“It is. I love you Sarah Mackenzie Rabb and I need to make love to you, now.” Harm growled in her ear.”
“Wait until we get to our room, Captain.” Mac cautioned her amorous husband with a laugh as she saw his pout.
Once in their room, Harm made sure his wife knew how much he had missed her and how much he loved her. Mac, in turned made sure to show him her love as well.
As they slept in each others arms for the first night of the rest of their lives, the fates were at work to make sure that one last dream was granted to the couple that had taken so long to find what they now had.
A week of stress free relaxation surrounded by love is the kind of environment that Harm, Mac and Mattie created while in the Bahamas. The days were for family and exploring and getting to know one another. For Mattie, the nights were about healing and recovering her strength and energy to work through the demands of the next day. For Harm and Mac, the nights were for loving and cuddling and enjoying the intimacy of marriage.
Too soon the real world would intrude and they would have to balance priorities - career and family. Neither would allow the other to lose focus for long. They made each other better in all aspects of life and they knew it.
PART 12
EPILOGUE
May 18 2006
Roberts Home
Outside Washington DC
“Hello?” Harriet answered the phone in her kitchen as she worked to get things ready for her oldest child’s sixth birthday.
“Hello Mac. How are you feeling?”
“Tired, but otherwise very good, actually.”
“That’s great. Are you getting anxious to get it over with?” Harriet asked her friend.
“Actually, I didn’t mind it all.”
“Oh my Gosh! You’ve already had the baby?”
“Yes...this morning. He’s perfect.”
“Where are you?”
“In the hospital still, but I felt fine and I wanted to call you myself.”
“How’s Daddy doing?”
“He was amazing. No one tear until it was over,” Mac teased.
“Sitting right there?”
“Yes, holding his son and counting the fingers and toes for about the tenth time.”
“Name?”
“We discussed it for months as you know, but I think I convinced him to see things my way.”
“So we have Harmon Rabb the third?”
“Not exactly...you see, I told him once that one Harmon Rabb in my life was enough, and he used it against me so I went to my second choice...Robert Harmon Rabb. He approved of Robert in honor of your family name, so then it was selling him on the middle name.”
“Tell me the details.”
“Well, he has dark hair and eyes like me...and he loves to be held already...and he’s fussy about what he eats and when, but he is beautiful. He weighed seven pounds six ounces and he was born on our godson’s birthday.”
“I hadn’t even thought about that.”
“Well I wasn’t due for another two weeks, but like Harm, he had his own sense of timing.”
“Is he long?”
“Yeah...Twenty-three inches and I’m convinced he is all legs and arms. There is nothing pudgy about this baby yet.”
“And you’ve probably already lost the twenty-five pounds you gained during pregnancy.”
“Not yet...but its only been six hours.”
“Send pictures okay?”
“I will Harriet. I’ve got to go and try to convince Rob to eat. The doctor informed me I may have to adjust my diet to accommodate my sons tastes if he doesn’t adjust in a few hours or, I’ll have to switch to formula. I always knew Harm would find a way to get me to eat healthier.”
“Take care. Give Rob, Mattie and Harm our love.”
Mac hung up the phone and watched Mattie and Harm cooing to the baby. “I think Mom needs to take over here for a few minutes.”
“Okay...here you go,” Harm said as he laid his son in his wife’s arms as she adjusted her gown to try nursing him again. Mattie stood to go and Mac, called her back.
“Mattie, you don’t have to leave unless you want to. I don’t mind you watching me nurse the baby. It’s natural and I promise I won’t purposely flash you or anything.”
Mac smiled remembering when Harm had first watched Harriet nurse AJ. He couldn’t get out of the room fast enough yet a part of him had wanted to watch. Now he helped her position the baby and used his hand to shield her while they tried to get Rob to take her breast.
Mattie had relaxed into her seat again fascinated more with the way Harm seemed so natural handling the baby then with the process of nursing. She had heard the story about the long ago deal they had struck about ‘going halves on a kid’ and she had been the one to remind them Rob had been born on AJ Roberts birthday.
Mattie had found that instead of being embarrassed by lovey-dovey parents she had been touched by it. They always made her feel a part of the family and included her in the plans for the baby reminding her over and over again that she would always be their first shared daughter.
Mattie had progressed with her rehabilitation through out the year and had recently been cut loose. Her therapist had returned home and Mattie was once again focused on her schooling. It would take her an extra year to earn the credits she would need to graduate and her physical progress would continue to improve as long as she wanted to keep building her strength and endurance. She had started jogging with Harm when Mac had to stop due to her pregnancy. She was looking forward to jogging and hiking together with them both as a family.
Mac had been on restricted duty during the last stages of her pregnancy and would return to work on a limited basis in six weeks. After the phone calls had been made and Rob finally starting nursing as they had hoped, Harm and Mac were finally alone again. They cuddled on the bed with the baby between them enjoying his presence.
“Thank you Harm. You’ve kept your promises to me and I have my miracle.” Mac kissed her husband.
“I think we have one more miracle to work toward...I think I promised you a daughter too.”
“We have Mattie.”
“Yes, but I promised you one that looked my me with your brains. I think when you’re ready we should work on that one too. What do you say?”
“I love you. And as soon as the doctor agrees its safe...” Mac trailed away as her husband kissed her again.
November 2010
Force JAG Europe Office
“Captain Rabb. This is the SecNav.”
“Yes sir. What can I do for you sir?”
“Prepare yourself and your family for another move. You are on the short list for the next JAG.”
“Sir, is General Creswell stepping down?”
“Yes. It seems he would rather be a grandfather then a General and his daughter threatened not to get married or have children until he stepped down.”
“So he retired.”
“He will be. You interested?”
“Yes sir, I am.”
“Good. Prepare you family for a pending move. Good luck Captain Rabb.”
Harm grabbed his cover and headed home. He needed to give her this news in person. Sarah Rabb was going to flip when she heard it. She had retired at twenty years when she discovered she was pregnant with their third child. At forty-three she was still as beautiful as ever and he was proud to be her husband. Now at forty-seven he had a shot at being JAG. He didn’t have thirty years in yet, but this would be his last chance to move up before he hit thirty years. It was a big decision and one the family needed to play a part in.
“Hey Rob...where’s Mommy?” he asked his son who greeted him at the front door.
“Franny filled her diaper again and she’s changing her. Why you home early Daddy?”
“I have some news that I wanted to tell your Mom in person.”
“We going to have a family meeting?”
“Probably later, son. Mac?” Harm called as he scooped up his almost three year old son. “Hi Jake. Where’s Mommy, huh?”
“Harm, I thought I was hearing things. What are you doing home?”
“Sit for a minute okay?”
“Is everything alright?”
“Yes...how would you feel about packing up the family and heading back to Washington DC?”
“You know I’d love to be close to Harriet and Bud again and Mattie is there in college now...spill it.”
“The SecNav called and General Creswell is retiring. I’m on the short list for JAG.”
“I think we should go for it. You were born for command and for that job Harm.”
“It will be different being there this time. I’ll have to deal with all the political stuff.”
“I’ll tell you what...I’ll work as your advisor as long as I can stay home and take care of our babies.”
“I promise. So you think you can handle another rapid turn around?”
“Yes.”
“I’ll let Washington know.”
January 2011
Washington D.C.
“Attention on deck!”
“At ease.” Harm looked around him on that January morning as he stood proudly wearing the two stars on his shoulder boards. The faces were once again all new and he knew what it must have been like for Admiral Chegwidden and General Creswell when they had stepped in to take the command. Now it was his turn to make this office click as well as Force JAG Europe had under his command, and this place had under his predecessors.
“I’ll meet with my senior staff in the conference room in thirty minutes. Carry on.”
Harm continued to his office. The same furniture worn but timeless greeted him. There was a new office chair in place, one designed to fit his longer body. It turned out to be a gift from General Creswell. Harm looked around and opened his briefcase. He removed the pictures and lovingly placed them on the shelves and on his desk. Visitors entering his office would pictures of him in cammies with his arm around his best pal and partner, then Lt. Colonel Sarah Mackenzie. Another picture showed Harm in dress whites flanked by retired Admiral AJ Chegwidden and Major General Gordon Creswell. The third picture was the wedding party - Harm and Mac with Bud and Harriet. The fourth picture was the Rabb Family taken before the holidays. Harmon and Sarah with Mattie, four and half year old Rob (who looked like his mother but acted more like his father and named Robert Harmon Rabb); three year old Jacob Harmon Rabb, (the spitting image of his father) and in his arms, their now six month old daughter Franny - short for Francis Mackenzie Rabb. Franny completed his promise to Mac. He finally was able to give her the little girl that looked like him and had her brains. He smiled as he set the last picture on the shelf and turned to his desk.
He placed one picture frame on his desk. This one had a small picture of Harm and Mac from their wedding in the center. In the four corners there was room for a current wallet size photo. Mattie was in one corner, wearing her cap and gown when she graduated from high school. Rob’s Christmas picture was in the opposite corner. Franny’s six month picture was below that and Jake’s Christmas picture was next to Franny’s picture and below Mattie’s. The frame and pictures had been a gift from Mattie for Christmas.
He looked around the office and realized he had come full circle and in doing so his life was so full and so complete that there was little he couldn’t handle that might come his way. He had been blessed over and over again and he hoped he was deserving of those blessings.
The phone rang.
“Yes Petty Officer?”
“Senior Staff is assembled and waiting for you in the conference room Admiral.”
“I’m on my way. Thank you Petty Officer.”
Harm grabbed the files he had prepared and his notepad. Duty called.
